I learned this about 35 years ago and my average improved from about 145, to about 180, in just one bowling season. Now at the age of almost 68, I’m bowling again after recovering from two spinal fractures, a rear end collision, and two back surgeries, over the last 35 years. I’m bowling in three leagues and my average in each of them ranges from 160 to 187, and with my new ball and practice, I hope to be bowling consistent 200+ games each week.

+Irene Ponce Thank you Irene, very glad that you liked my video. Practice and be consistent...that is the secret. When you know your approach was right, your speed to the foul line, back swing, lift and release, that you rolled the ball over the Arrow/or Board you were aiming at....only then can you learn to read the Lane and make the appropriate adjustments for the Lane. And the Lane will change as you bowl. The oil on the Lane will dry and adjustments will have to be made. But that is for a more advanced lesson. When you get to that point, you are no longer a Beginner. Some have commented that my video is too simplistic. Those that did so try to imply that they know how to bowl and that my approach does not work. The real question is, if they already know how to Bowl...why are they even watching a video that was designed for a Beginner. There will always be Haters.

Great video, and yes for the most part this is correct. However, depending on oil patterns, type of ball, and rev/speed these aim points might be to the left or right for some. Knowing how your hall hooks and consistently throwing will help you figure this out though relatively easily.

~~~Whoosh~~~ Most of this video flew right over my head. Huh? But, but...if I stand there, the gutter will suck me and the ball right in. They have augmented gravitational pull, don't they? Bowling for the first time Monday. Don't want to completely humiliate myself, so I'm watching some videos and hoping I don't throw the ball into the seats or drop it on my foot. I'm skard, wish I could rassle a bear instead. Bowl great on Wii, do the skills transfer? Maybe I should wait until I'm over 70 so I'll have the maturity to handle it if I suck. Don't get the angles now, but I have a feeling that a year from now, this will be the most important video I watch. Going to watch it again tomorrow for an encore and hope the concepts seem clearer.

thanks for the video..I am from Malaysia and beginner in bowling. before this I always target the center pin because I believed that by speeding the ball I would be able to get strike. unfortunately the ball will turn to the left side when it reach the pocket. now understand how arrows on the lane can assist me to get strike....and spare

Funny, whenever I try to bowl by arrows, I make myself crazy thinking about how I missed it by one or two boards. So i stopped doing that. Now all I do is aim at the 6 pin. No matter where I am on the lane, if I aim at the 6 pin, I hit the pocket.

Me too. My delivery is so much better when looking down lane at the pins. Rather than short-arming it at the arrows, my follow through toward the pins is much better which helps my accuracy and ball speed. Different strokes for different folks, literally..

Hello All and thank you for your kind comments. One thing I would like to correct is my reference to the 2nd Arrow as the focal point to aim at on spares. The average focal point for spares should be between the 2nd and 3rd Arrow, with the 3rd arrow being the starting point for the average bowler. The 2nd Arrow is a very steep angle, but doable if you have a large curve. The point is to find what works for you, while you learn to use the guides... the Dots and Arrows provided to you on the Lane. I hope this helps. What Focal Point (For 10 Pin) would you suggest trying with an older bowler that has more than 10 boards of break with a benchmark ball? Problem that I'm having with him is 5 boards of drifting, the use of a Rev Support Brace which gives 4 boards of Plastic break because of the rotation. Benchmark Balls he throws 3rd arrow.

With 10 boards of break, assuming the he is right handed, he should use the 2nd board to the right of the 2nd arrow as a starting point. I am not sure what you mean by "5 boards of drifting"; but if the ball rotation is excessive, then he needs to reduce the rotation. The whole purpose of rotating the ball is so it moves into the pocket at a 45degree angle to carry the 5 pin. Too little or too much rotations will cause control problems. The rotation of the wrist controls this, just reduce the rotation of the wrist.

For a Left Hander, just reverse everything. Your main focus would be from the Left side of the lane, but the premise is still the same. Left Handers actually have an advantage, as there are fewer of you and so the left side of the lane get less "Tracked Up"; so the action of the Lane remains more consistent over several games.

Rober, If you have a ten board break and you are hitting the 2nd arrow or the 10 th board, then your ball will hit the middle of the 1 pin. You should should be trying to hit the pocket which is the 17.5 board. Also if you would check your entry angle you will find that you are trying to achieve a 6 degree angle and not a 45 degree. It is physically impossible to achieve a 45 degree angle. Do more research.

Excellent video, but I need clarification on the footwork. You are teaching right-handed bowlers. When you talk about the foot, which foot are you talking about, the left or the right. I assume it's the right foot. Where on the board do I place the foot? Do I center the board under my foot? Or do I put my foot to the left or to the right of the board? This is the first video I have saved to review constantly.

Here's the problem that I have with this video, it is not really for a novice, but an intermediate bowler. Novices either will be using a house ball, or will have bought a cheap ball, neither of which are designed for hooking. They are straight spare balls. The novice should be taught how to aim for a straight release to score, as this will lead to higher scores for them, make them more interested in continuing to play and learn.

Using your strike ball Arrow works great for my left side spare pins like the 2-4-7-8 Pins. But the right side spare Pins 3-6-9-10 requires standing far to the left, and aiming about the middle Arrow. That 2nd arrow on the right is just too far over for 3-6-10 pin conversions, for me.

today's high performance bowling balls make it easy for any amateur to score well on any condition but try doing it with an old school ball such as a Brunswick crown jewel.

+Steven Boone yup got one. don't use it anymore. can't compete with it. Guru Supreme for state shots, sync and Taboo for THS. Bowling with jewels on wood boards just isn't the game now. I'd like to see the PBA do an OG leauge. Bowlers only use 1 hand to deliver the ball WITH THUMB, and the balls are old Manhattan rubbers.

I contend that most beginners are not throwing a 10 board break and that they are throwing a straighter shot. If so, the 3-6-9 spare shooting system would be much simpler and more accurate.

If your feet are at the second dot the ball would leave your hand at about two or three boards right of the first dot wouldn’t it? nice video but my ball don't react to what your saying on here lol have to stand on the second dot from the left gutter then throw it to the center right arrow then gradually turns in because of so much rotation that I put into it on my lift so I think it's pretty much on the bowler lol still get between 178-240 with a bowling ave of 198 ave for my league

What if you throw a straight ball, getting strikes by hitting the pockets just right 1/3 and picked up a single pin by a straight throw?

Hi Elaine, Good Question. There is nothing wrong with throwing a Straight Ball on your first and second shot. And if you do so, then you map out your foot position and target arrows accordingly to hit your spot consistently. The point is to be consistent and use the spots and arrows on the lane to guide you. The purpose of a Curve, and please do not confuse the term Curve with a HOOK! The purpose of a Curve, especially on your first Ball is to carry the 5 pin. It is a simple matter of physics! As the Ball hits the pocket ( 1-3 or 1-2 ), the weight of the pins will cause the ball to deflect or bounce off and less likely to carry the 5 pin. When the ball is Breaking into the pocket, because it is curving in that direction, it reduces the deflection and drives through the pocket too the 5 pin. If you consistently through a straight ball, you will leave more 5 pins standing; and 5-7 or 5-10 combinations on balls that hit the pocket square. Learn to throw a controlled Curve. Hi Robert. Personally, I find it much easier to keep the hook for the pocket, and use a straight ball for the spares. Sure, it doesn't look as nice - but I pick up a lot more spares. I get a little more variance in the hook but my straight balls are precise. I use a poly ball for spares which seems to help limit any inaccuracies in the straight release. I guess I'm not a very interesting bowler to watch, but I do alright. My team-mates hook everything and their spares are dramatic - my spare pickups are a yawn : / Perhaps my hook just needs more work. Should I force myself to hook spares?

you sure it isn't too risky to try to pick up the 10 pin with a RIGHT hook? given how extremely close it will put the ball to the gutter, you have very little room for error than straight line imo.

Need exact placement of feet. All bowling balls do not hook the same, so second arrow is not always the target arrow.

I have explained this in several of my comments since I made this video. This video is intended for beginners, and for reference only as everyone will have a different approach and style. I used an 8 to 10 board break as an example. If your break is more or less than an 8 to 10 board break, then you need to adjust accordingly both in the placement of your feet on the approach dots/board and the target arrow/board you aim at. The point is to identify the break you are comfortable with, and then determine what Dot/Board you need to start at and the Arrow/Board you need to aim for. Once you know this information, you can then focus on being consistent with making this happen. Then you need to expand this knowledge/information to what ever Pins/Spare that is left standing and make the proper adjustment based on your Ball Movement/Curve. Good luck, and Good bowling.

Okay-- maybe. There a lot of people who pin bowl. I don't believe that is bad. I spot bowl. That's how I learned. My problem is that I got out of shape and out of practice. Now that I'm retirement age I lost the form I used to have, 30 years ago. If you have helpful tops please offer them.

Isn't the pocket on board 18? The head pin is on board 20. If the ball rolled straight down 10 it would need 8 boards to hook to the pocket.

Yes, you are correct the head pin is on board 20. One of the flaws in my lesson is that I failed to mention the importance of carrying the 5 pin on your first ball. The rotation of the ball forces it to move up into the pocket, but when the ball contacts the pocket it is still moving deeper into the pocket...ideally towards the 20th board. This further penetration into the pocket completes the desired goal of reaching the 20th board and carrying the 5 pin. A light hit on the pocket, where first contact is on the 18th board or less will many times result in the 5 pin not being carried and may leave several other pins as well...due to reduced pin action. Ideally, first contact, assuming a moderate ball break of 6 to 10 boards, should be on the 19th board; which in turn will continue through to the 20th board and carry the 5 pin. I tend to think of the 5 pin as the sleeper "Head Pin". If your ball penetrates the pocket to contact the 5 pin at board 20, you will have a great chance of carrying all 10 pins. All of this explanation is from a right handed point of view. The main goal of my lesson was to eliminate the mystery of where to stand on the lane for any pin or spare. If you are consistent with your steps, speed to the line, back swing and release; you will be able to determine how many boards your ball breaks and then be able to determine where to stand and what dots and arrows to use. As you gain more experience, you will learn how to adjust to lanes as they dry or lose their oil treatment during your outing. Bowling is a great game where you are really matched against yourself and the lane. No two lanes are always the same. You must learn to make adjustments. But if you are not consistent with all of the basics, adjusting is a waste of time...you are just fighting yourself.

It is a fluid motion. As you are lifting and releasing the ball, with your hand - palm up under the ball, you rotate your hand 90 degrees up into a shake hand position. At this point your fingers are releasing or exiting the ball. This forces the ball to rotate, and thus curve once it stops sliding and grabs the lane.

This tutorial is for the novice, but anyone that is serious about learning to bowl should have their own bowling ball. House balls are never desirable. However, a novice bowler should not purchase a "custom hook ball" for their first ball. They are intended for the seasoned bowler. A large hook looks cool, but is very hard to control and not for the beginner.

One thing I'm still unclear about is the actual approach. When you move to the different starting points for spares, when you approach the release point are you supposed to walk toward the spot (arrow) you are aiming at or do you try to walk straight down the board you start at? Is the release point on a straight line between your stating spot and the arrow you aim at or is the release point always centered on the lane? Thanks!

You walk directly towards the spot you are aiming at, if you did not you would have to throw the ball at an angle from your body as your released it...either crossing your body or out and away from your body. You should always keep your body straight, shoulders square, walk towards the spot you are aiming at, and release the ball straight out and perpendicular to your shoulders. So when you are aiming at spares, most of the time you are walking at an angle towards the foul line.

Yes. This information might come in handy if I decide to continue bowling from this point forward. I just am now understanding what it takes (thanks to the Brad and Kyle bowling experience) to be on the PBA tour, which is what any serious bowler is after. It's a total nightmare in cost, transportation, lodgings and skill on the battlefield is not enough. You need balls for the oils. Different balls for different patterns. The knowledge of when to use what ball when. What a nightmare!!!! It's a marketing dream world. $$$$$$$$ it's all about someone getting very very rich from all the wannabe super-stars. Perfection. No training in the world will be enough if you can't bowl 300's on demand.

If you are right handed, your right foot; if you are left handed, your left foot. But all references in this video are from a right handed perspective.

Reymolds,Are you out of your mind? If you are right handed, you use your left foot,(sliding foot) to position with your right foot behind your left foot. Look at any professional game and you will see that the bowler will place his left foot on the dot first and his right behind. Why are you giving such bad information?

Robert thanks for video, I'm a beginner and today first time bowling knowing what the dots are I bowled 3 games all over 100 and my high 136. I used a 15 lb house ball with nicks in it. What kind of ball and weight ball should I buy? Thanks

You should use the heaviest ball that you can comfortably control, it is that simple. As far as what kind of ball to buy, I would go to a quality bowling alley and speak to the House Pro. There are many new types of Bowling Balls that I am not familiar with. I use a Hard Rubber and a Soft Rubber Ball for different Lane conditions. But if you want to improve at bowling, get your own ball. And I am glad you liked the video. It was designed for new bowlers like yourself. Good luck and Good Bowling.

+Robert Reynolds also a rubber bowling ball on average a pro could only get a max of about 5 boards of hook. also this guy is complete crap at modern bowling this guy doesn't even know how to bowl a ten pin properly also look up usbc on KZbin actually certified coaches that use modern bowling equipment that there grandparents didn't leave behind after they passed away

Thanks I have improved and got a high of 175 with house ball. I stand with left foot center of my toes on middle dot then throw at second arrow. That works best for me and I just got a spare ball tzone drilled for me to try to get my PAP so I can get my strike ball next.

Slothy...stay up in your tree! Bowling is about simple basics. Know how to use the markings on the lane, have a consistent approach and release, and make adjustments as the lane conditions change. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with the material you Ball is made of! Only 5 Boards...you are so full of .....

@@jeremypee4128 I'm just saying how his instructions would apply to left handed bowlers. I'm guessing the oil on the left side wouldn't degrade as much or as fast as the right

@@yankeesrule587 For left handers, often the shot is a lot straighter, and movement to the right as oil spreads is less exaggerated, compared with righties moving left. And then theres asymmetrical oil as well. Likewise, correction for misses will be slightly different.

I use plastic ball on my sparing and use the 3-6-9 sparing system, it works so easy than my hook ball.

Saying you should stand here or there is not enough. Preface it to say that you should mark which board to stand on with your front left big toe for right handed bowlers and your right big toe for left handed bowlers.
