A spare isn't 20 points, it's 10 + your next throw Similarly a strike isn't 30, it's 10 + your next two throws So a spare is only 20 when you hit a strike afterwards and a strike is only worth 30 when you hit three strikes in a row

That's not how you score a spare, a spare adds the first frame of the next set on top of the score of it's own set, a strike adds the next 2 frames to itself, so a strike then a strike then a strike then 2 gutter balls, would be 30 at first with the second frame being 20 and the third strike had nothing after after it so It would stay at 10, whereas the spare say you got a spare first set, them then you got a 7 and 2, the 7 would add to the spare making a total of 17 first frame and the 9 from the second frame would bring it to 26...
