This happens to everyone. My Dad was born in 1933 and his music was the big bands and swing of the 40s and 50s. He passed away in 2020 and that was still “his music.” Of course he listened to music of later eras, but everyone is always nostalgic and has a preference for the music of their youth, when life was still carefree.

Your comment sir wouldn't taint me. I was born in 90s and reminisce much of the music from 50s and 60s (from Holly to Beatles and Everyone that came in between). Even I find it hard to listen to 90s, 2000s commercial grunge blemish over the music scene and that rap pop boy bands coming out of the demand of radio business. So in all no, I would prefer Dylan, Gutherie, seeger, Hopkins, Dominos over any commercial 2000s artist ever.

As someone born in 1996, I spent the first ten years of my life listening to what my parents did between the early ‘70s and ‘80s. I first heard this song when it was released, once what was then contemporary music made its way into my life. I still have to say, 1985 was an incredible year for the music and film industries, and I can’t blame Debbie for still being preoccupied with that era.

I love how this song is 17 years old and it makes a reference to "music still on MTV." That's how old the complaint about MTV not playing music anymore is (and it's much older than this video!) A lot of people who complain about it probably never were alive when MTV mostly still played music.

Now the complaint is that people can remember a time when they could ever see music on MTV at all, whereas now even the "TV" part of "MTV" is kind of pushing it, as the only thing they ever play is ridiculousness- and I promise that's barely even an exaggeration

Those toys on the lawn are my friend’s actual toys in the garage they used, I used to play with those 😂 and the flowers on the house and the trees are fake, they’re props they stuck up there. My mom had a conversation with Debby’s actor. I got their autographs. The band was high as a kite when I met them lol I sat on the right side of the stage during the last garage scene they filmed, I was just out of camera shot with my friends.

The difference between 1985 and 2004, when this song was released, is 19 years. The difference between 2004 and 2023, when I’m writing this comment, is 19 years. “1985” is officially the 1985-music of today.

She was gonna be an actress, she was gonna be a star She was gonna shake her ass, Way sexier than these damn twerkers are, VHS and CDs; are now just memories, Looks at her average life, and nothin' has been alright since... Rammstein, Nirvana, Way before Lady Gaga, Before KZbin, react comedy, Was Beavis and Butthead watching MTV, She looks back, on high school, And wishes she could go back to, The days when she felt alive, in 19-19-1995. She's seen all the classics, she knows every line, Titanic, Pulp Fiction, and Heat, Even Jim Carey in Liar, Liar, She rocked out to Dave Matthews Band, Still a big Limp Bizkit fan, Thought she'd get a hand, on a member of Pearl Jam, Where's the Jnco jeans, neckties, and safety pins, And who's the new guy that's actin' in Batman Begins, Sick and tired of reality TV, And missin' old cartoons, on nickelodeon, On the radio was: Rammstein, Nirvana, Way before Lady Gaga, Before KZbin, react comedy, Was Beavis and Butthead watching MTV She looks back on high school, And wishes she could go back to, The days when she felt alive, in 19-19-1995. She hates time, make it stop, When did Marilyn Manson become old school? And when did Paris Hilton start actin too? Please make beiber stop, stop, stop... And bring back: Rammstein, Nirvana, Way before Lady Gaga, Before KZbin, react comedy, Was Beavis and Butthead watching MTV, She looks back on high school, And wishes she could go back to, The days when she felt alive, in 19-19-1995.

It's crazy when we realize that this song (2004) be more closer to the actual 1985, instead of us in 2024.

Fun fact: This song is almost impossible to find when you forget the name, who sings it, that it's not a 90s song, and that it's been a decade since you last heard it and can't remember the lyrics too well. Spent an hour searching "garage band seduces neighbor's wife" before finding it by going to another early 2000s song and seeing it in the suggested. But I found my way back! Thanks, random urge to listen to this song at 3am!

Chelo Newman It's not just music that sucks now. Way more than that. It was simpler times in the 70's and 80's. More about living life and less about being behind a screen.

MTV stopped showing real music/music videos around 2007. If it wasn't watered down, pant-sagging rap, Lady Gaga, teen pop/girl pop or whatever, it wasn't getting played. I mean isn't played.
