Lovely, kinder, and gentler time?! Do you even know what was happening then? Oh, my goodness. We had watched with horror the First Gulf War and the bloodbath that was the fighting in the Balkans, including the complete destruction of the Olympic stadium, and nothing was going right anywhere else. The so-called peace dividend we were supposed to have with the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe was obviously going to be spent on more warfare. The EU was in recession and the US was soon to go into one, too. We had all just lived through the Y2K scare, the end of the world as we know it, and celebrating the new century a year too soon, everywhere except Cuba where they learned in school that the last century ends with a 0 and starts with a 1. Then in 2001 was the terrorist attack on the US. It was one awful thing after another. As we can see in this, rioting was practically normal. Somebody is going to say in the future that 2019 was a lovely, kinder, gentler time. There's one born every minute. Sigh.
