Great video Jazzy. I really like the Rhino Folio sets of CSNY Deja vu and Love Forever Changes. They are mostly cd but the vinyl pressings of the original albums are fantastic and pretty cheap. They are beautifully done and really honour the original albums. I'd love to see a video of your Rhino CD box sets, the 3 Nuggets boxes are things of beauty and the way all box sets should be done. All the best, Paul in England.

Thanks for showcasing this selection of stunning box sets, Mazzy. I really enjoyed seeing these… including the small handful of ones that I own. Totally agree that these are great for deep dive listening and the curation, presentation and graphics for me can often be as enjoyable and aesthetically pleasing as the music itself.

Great fun as always Mazzy ! I love that these box sets exist, and you obviously get so much pleasure out of them. We all make choices when it comes to buying physical music, and I'd really like some of these, especially the Allman's set, the original double being my own personal most played album of all time. Hendrix is the musician I have most albums by, over 40 cd's, because I love the outtakes and just hearing Jimi speaking in the studio and getting things together. Not too many vinyl box sets by him available though, and would I buy them if they became available ? We'll have to see, the prospect is exciting though, music is so amazing isn't it !

Nice video Mazzy, thank you. I blow a bit hot & cold on box sets, some feel like record companies cashing in on die-hard fans, but occasionally the production of the package and/or the alternative mixes are too good to resist. I see 8 disks of the Prince 'Sign O' The Times' set is on Apple Music to stream at CD quality so I'll give it a listen today. Cheers - D

The problem I have with box sets is that sometimes it's just too much for what I have time for. I still have the Wildflowers 9LP box sitting on the shelf untouched and that's one of my Top 10-20 albums of all time. If I can't even find time for that how will I ever find time for albums I don't hold in such high regard. Unfortunately box sets take time (and space) that I just don't have right now with work and family responsibilities.

i have only 2 big box sets. Beatles Sgt. Pepper's deluxe edition and Elton John's Jewel Box. I live in Mexico with my mom and i was going to wait and get the Beatles White album when we returned. But unfortunatly Amazon does not sell the full box directly only through 3rd party sellers... for MORE money. but at least i was able to get the 3 CD edition containing what the vinyl contains. But back to the box. i have to admit the Elton Jewel Box is my fav out my 2 box sets that i have but only by a small margin. I dont think im as big of a fan of album box sets as i am with deep cuts, rarities and archival stuff box sets like the Elton John box. I KNOW you probely have those types of box sets? do you plan to do a video of those?

Enjoyed this video immensely. The back stories and tales were fun to listen to. Most box sets are somewhat out of my range. I do love the few that I have. Box sets always look great.....but far beyond what I can afford. I was looking forward to the re-release of All Things Must Pass but the price was to much for me so it remains, probably permanently, in my bucket list. (I have a pretty full bucket list and most of it's contents will more than likely go to the grave with me so, that album will have a lot of company). These are great things, indeed but reserved for those with the extra cash to enjoy them. Like I've been saying: Life is for those who can afford to live it. Same thing applies with box sets.

Mazzy- It would be fun and educational to hear from you what artists you think should have box sets (that don't already) and what albums you would include. This could include artists who do have box sets, but need improving or updating (such as an unlikely all analogue, modern Beatles Box). Greatly enjoy your work. -Tye

Hey Norman what's up? There is a band that you're aware of but don't have the actual sets. That's the Jethro Tull box sets remastered by Steven Wilson. Yes there are 10 of them thus far but it's one per album. They all come with a concert, demos, and remastered. They are my personal favorite and some people charge upwards of $300 for Songs, War Child. It's absurd but they are beautiful.

Yes I would like to have/listen to a number of those sets, lol. Aside from the Dylan 2cd boots, I rarely throw down for them. From what I hear, it is important to inspect each box set purchase carefully to make sure the records are not warped and play well and that they are the correct records and cds b/c mistakes can happen and it cost a lot of $ to buy and that you got all the extras.

The Vinyl Guru recently had an episode asking about how often people listen to their box sets. The main arguement was the accessibility and difficulty of pulling records out of the sets. I commented that if that's a problem then record collectors need to get off their arses more often & move around. Luckily the Vinyl Guru had a good sense of humour in regards to this. Although I don't have many single album box sets I totally understand if the artist is one of your fav's it is fascinating to do the deep dive. There's no argument because they're not marketed towards the casual fan who just wants the studio albums or a best of. That's why these things are limited and so friggin' expensive!! To me it's the same old argument...If you don't like it, don't buy it...or get the standard edition. It's not hard to work out. Love your shit as always Mazzburger 🤘

Enjoyed this, as always. As to the "why?", because it is there is as good a reason as any. I remember back in the mid-70s when I bought Keith Jarrett's 10-LP The Sun Bear Concerts. It was expensive (around $100) for the time; many thought it was overkill. There were complaints about "why didn't he release these as five double albums?" Well, because he is Keith Jarrett, I suppose. (It was and is well worth the $100, and to this day I have no buyer's remorse...)

My Rough Trade UK original 'Queen Is Dead' LP is quite challenging to listen to. It has that brittle, tipped-up mastering that typifies a lot of 1980s British alternative releases. I can't recall - so I don't want to slander him - but I think it was Tim Young. Although revered in some quarters, I find all the Rough Trade originals fatiguing. I tried a couple of the Frank Arkwright 2011 Smiths remasters - I assume the 2017 box version of the original album is same master? - which I thought were okay-ish.

What I really really hate is that we go and buy these boxsets, spend 100+, 200+, 300+ dollars and they always upload 100% of it's content to spotify, apple music, etc. I use to like what Dylan did with Triplicate, which was upload a sample of it, and then rest of the songs you had to buy them. I've always seen streaming as a connivance and a way of checking the record before I buy it, but I hate how boxsets gets full on releases. They should at least keep some tracks out if people out there are spending more than 200 USD on one.

I sense just a tinge of buyer's remorse re: the ALL THINGS MUST PASS uber box...even with all the discounts you got on it. I too have the same illness as you described when it comes to the Beatles, but as far as the ATMP uber box is concerned, I still clung to my sanity...and after a brief period of wavering back and forth, I finally and steadfastly refused to surrender to the urge. In this case at least, I conquered my illness, and I've never regretted it since. Plus the fact that I wouldn't have had the space to store that thing even if I had bought it.

It was a different style than Asylum expected and David Geffen didn’t like it so they probably didn’t promote it very well if at all.

Very much enjoyed this video. I'm more into CD box sets but overall, I enjoy them if they're presented well and have some interesting stuff in them like demos. Even if its a box set featuring one album, putting a live recording in from the tour supporting that album is always something I like to see. I think Black Sabbath has done that with some of their single album box sets.

Cool concept for a video. That bulky UHRQ Miles box set is certainly unnecessary. Like a recent Bowie release that I picked up: The Mercury Demos with John Hutchinson; one LP in a box, with the inside album cover resembling a 12” tape reel. A NICE release, but it takes up too much space! 🙄 Beautiful Kinks Village Green box! Yeah, people say “the original album release configuration is what the artist intended.” Well, my response is two-fold: first of all, IS IT?? Who can climb into the head of Ray Davies and know for sure? AND, even if that’s the case, are we saying Ray still feels that way today? People CAN change their minds. And secondly: By releasing an expanded box set, no one is destroying the original release configuration. So that “what the artist originally intended” line is a pile of nonsense to me. Of course, the quality of the “expanded” content is what dictates if the re-release is really worth it. The Who Sell Out: I LOVE that recent box set, as well as the stereo & mono LP re-releases (same with My G-G-G-Generation). Still hoping for an A Quick One box, but it doesn’t seem forthcoming - looks like Who’s Next/Lifehouse will be The Next archival Who release - I’ll take it! For The Beatles, I wish they took some of the incomplete takes and “created” some complete rarities by splicing incomplete takes together to make them new, full versions of songs. So much better than a fragment imho. What a wonderful video, Mazzy! Keep breaking your own rules. 👍
