Congrats, man! How are things going now with your career? I see it's been 10 years since you wrote that comment. I'm trying to get on at the local volunteer fire department here in Mocksville NC. My goal is to eventually get hired as a career firefighter in the city though but, I'm already 36 years old. I'm healthy but, my age is somewhat older than preferred in the fire service so, I'm worried about being rejected. I've applied online as instructed but, the department claims they're having issues on their end of the application/hiring process. I keep calling them back to check up on my acceptance but, it's been near 3 months now and I'm becoming discouraged. Regardless, I'm going to keep at it until I'm told "NO"...

Where can I take a rescue training course for a tower rescue like this one? Thank you, Jim H.

cutting lanyard should be your last resort. Many patients and rescuers have been injured or killed when cutting.

Very important considerations, and I agree with you. However, tower companies do have equipment available that many fire departments do not have. Ex. Twin Fall Arrest Lanyards, Cable Climbs, etc... All of which would be very easy to inspect quickly and I wouldn't hesitate to use them if they were in good condition. As far as using workers as rescuers, maybe not as rescuer but definitely for information gathering. Hazards of the particular site, shutting down power if needed, etc...

YES! Employers climbing towers should ensure that they put their workers through an approved Tower Climbing Rescue Course (usually 2-3 days) and have equipment such as Type 3 SRLs, descent devices, pulley, rescue rope, rescue hooks, or spending the money for a high angle rescue team to be on site. And companies need to be good about inspecting and recertifying all tower climbing equipment as per standards.

If they employees are there you would think they would start the rescue and the FD would just provide assistance as necessary
