The student is raising his elbow on the jab because he is trying to begin the twisting of the arm at the start of the punch, rather than twisting once the hand is already moving in a straight line. A good remedy for this is to stand sideways against the wall and throw the jab - the wall will block the elbow from swinging out and up, and will cause you to move the elbow in a straight line forward and up as you rotate the arm (twist). Also, to help westerners understand the difference between the waist and kua, think of the kua as being more involved with the HIPS, the PELVIC BONE and the upper thigh bone where it connects to the pelvic socket. Whereas the waist is the visceral area right above the pelvic bone/hip joint. You can twist at the waist without really moving the hips, and you can twist the hips without really twisting the waist (although the waist will of course move/turn, it will not itself be necessarily twisting). As the instructor said, turning and twisting are not exactly the same.
