The ability to manage range is one of the single-most important aspects in #boxing. Coach PJ & Shane talk about range zones 1-4, and how to control the distance as either the taller or shorter fighter. Whether you want to fight on the outside and use your jab, or get in close to work the body, it's all dictated by who can control the range!

@@leviathan2303 I am regularly sparring with a 6’3 dude and I’m 5’8, in mma (Muay Thai specifically), and while he can jab or knee. - I can definitely do Mike Tyson’s peekaboo to close in, and work the body predominantly or throw an overhand hook to mix things up. - The biggest thing I learned is that if you want to step in, or to the side when jabbing, then keep a hand glued to your cheek. This is a defensive thing, in case you are not fast enough to slip under his 1,2,3 or if he throws uppercuts, like shown in this video. - Best wishes from a 5’8 martial artist with 1.5y experience. I have fought at -78kg, -72kg and -66kg.

One drill I like to do when I’m training in my martial arts club (I practice Chinese Kenpo) works similarly to the resistance band heavy bag drill, but instead of a heave bag and resistance band we’re tied to our sparring partner by our belts, this not only helps us with moving in and out of different ranges but it also stops people from moving straight back because it’s a bad habit to develop in a fight.

Your gonna wanna drop well down under 200, 69" reach and 5'10 is 155 to 170 frame (mma divisions would be lightweight and welterweight) and even at 70 your gonna be the shorter guy in height and reach. Use your power, crowd your opponent so they can't keep you at the end of there punches. maintain a high tight guard and don't waste much energy on jabs and WORK THE BODY!Your gonna need to be a power pocket boxer. Fight em in a phone booth. That's the begginers guide to fire hydrant fighting!!!! Hope your still at it!!!!!

Im 6'0, and my primary sparring partner(these days) in Muay Thai is 6 foot 9 lol. Tallest guy I've ever seen, though I have more skill and experience than him, so I almost always "win"(well, as much as you can "win" in a sparring session, I land more and better shots nearly every single match, and defend far better, barely anything gets through in all our matches). Still he is learning how to use his reach, and even now his jab is deadly. And he picks apart some of the less skilled guys, who are shorter than me so he has an even bigger size advantage(hes not fat in the slightest bit, he's quite skinny actually, but he's very tall, tallest guy Ive ever met in person, and he happens to be one of my closer friends..most of my regular sparring partners become my closest friends, usually, and so it is with this guy thats 6'9). I focused on leg kicks as my primary damage dealer, and when I can I close the idstance to land hooks to body and head. With guys my own size I can use other strategies, but I gotta use everything I know about fighting super tall guys in order to win these matches. I have more fun vs guys my own size, like my coach even though he's more skilled than me and usually wins our matches, than I do vs a guy with a foot of height over me lol - and Im NOT exactly a short Man either. Drawing an attack from him, an then closing when his leg is coming down or he's retracting his fist is also another way I like to close the distance to begin my combos/begin attacking. Theres many ways. I block most of his punches, and check and try to offbalance him when he throws kicks at me(his kicks arent as good as they could be, at least not yet. He will be formidable indeed when he masters the teep).

@vetrik7301
@vetrik7301 5 жыл бұрын
The question you gotta ask then is how do your opponents close the distance when you're using your full range. Are they stepping in right after you punch? Are you lunging /leaning with your punches? Are you missing a lot? Are you throwing enough punches? Are you punching as you move? Are you using your full range? You're right in that this video on its own isn't sufficient to maintain range, but there are more videos covering other issues that you may have. For example I found that I kept my elbows bent when I punched which shortened my range but also telegraphed my shot and once I practiced with the right form it became easier to keep my range because my opponent didn't have clues on when to step in and couldn't really reach me with their shots. What I'm saying is that range fighting is hard because your opponent will do anything they can to invade your range, so the better your technique/ more aware of your own form you are, the easier it'll be to control the ring. I hope this is making sense to you and helps a bit.
