Maximus was stabbed in the ribs, causing a pneumothorax. This happened while they were under the arena, out of sight of the crowd. With that injury, Maximus was going to die anyway and he knew it. Commodus thought the injury was going to be severe enough that he'd have a relatively easy victory but they'd make it look good. Commodus was a decent fighter but there was no way he'd be able to (literally) survive a fight with an uninjured Maximus, and he knew it... therefore he cheated and stabbed Maximus before the fight started.

Ive always loved this movie but the end of it makes no sense now that Im a bit older. No man would continue to swing on the outside when someone is about to stab your neck. Anyone would bring their arm to the inside to stop the blow and Maximus wasnt preventing that in any way. And given how weak Maximus was from the blow before the fight Commodus would have no problem doing so. Especially if he brought one leg back to brace. Kind of silly when you really think about it. Also when Maximus dropped his sword Commodus could have picked up either one............

The weird part is, is that Commidus wasn't actually so bad, he was going haywire from that cocaine or powder he was being dosed, he loathed his position and the people he was around, he didn't truly respect the military or their conquests.... They made him the little easily defeatable bad guy, but I mean really.

It's simply one of those things audiences expect in a movie, like bows creaking, arrows knocking people over, and a metallic shriek when a sword is drawn. Sometimes reality just isn't quite as exciting. 😁

I think it is what he deserves for murdering his wife and child. The reason why "Gladiator" (2000) is one of my favorite movies, is its association with Shakespeare's tragedies, such as "Hamlet" (1500s or 1600s). The British actor who performed in "Gladiator", Derek Jacobi, also performed in a 1996 movie adaptation of the play. It is also my favorite play.
