I love how the Tarasov brothers are the ones to introduce John to others in the first two movies since he worked for their family and they know how truly terrifying he is and why he’s called Baba Yaga. There's nothing about that opening that says the head of the chop shop actually wants to be fighting John, and there's nothing that shows him thinking his men will kill John. They weren't going to kill him, he knew that, he knew he'd lose a bunch of men and property, and the losses would have been far greater than the value of one car. IRL people do value their lives.
