Prime Roy, my God. He could beat any MW or SMW ever, conceivably beat any LHW ever, and HW Roy would have been a top 5 heavy in his time had he actually pursued that route. Jones was an extremely rare breed of fighter, and we were lucky to be alive during his time.

This so beautiful, this is pure and epic talent. No one ever was that talented and good. No wonder so many of our beloved experts have him as the best ever, Max, Larry, Jim, even Ray Leonard admits Jones was unvkomparable. Wenn we, as boxing lovers see him like that, there's a little sadness inside that he didn't hang them up after 2003 and Ruiz, after being the youngest Olympic finalist ever, after having the longest prime ever and the longest run on pfp No. 1 ever, and that he let it happen to get defeatet by Hopkins in their 2nd and Calzaghe. But he was not good with the cash and he simply loved it. What a giant, what an artist, and still what a man.

Regardless of Woods, look at Jones in this fight. His next fight was HW and then Tarver 1 (which he won). ALL of this was gone. Loosing that weight killed him. He should have retired after the first Tarver fight (I agree with the 117-111 score the most). He simply was never the same again. You can't loose 25lbs of muscle at 35 and expect to be the same.

first off, RJJ was 182 on fight night vs woods, which means he put on 17lbs by the ruiz fight. BUT RJJ was 192lbs when he started his camp for the ruiz fight. in that time he put on maybe 5lbs of actual muscle, its impossible to put on 25 lbs of muscle in one fight camp, even with steroids it would be impossible. personally i think it was just jones time, the second tarver fight he was 35 and had 50+fights, he just declined physically, his speed, reflexes etc were lost and he was generally fighting much bigger, taller, younger fighters in the last years.

Roy Jones Junior looked very sharp in this TKO win against a fair opponent in Clinton Woods - who tried hard. Jones' hand speed was exceptional. He became cocky and super confident, playing to the audience with typical Jones antics, mixed with flurries of punches which ended the contest.

Tarver and Jones are the same age, Tarver only became a Professional Boxer in 98, aged 28, yet by 2000, he was the No 1 Challenger and had been screaming for a fight with Jones, who had him shunted down the queue and clearly didn't want to fight him. Tarver only got his chance because he continually called him out, claiming he was a Fraud and a Myth, and he would back his taunts up. Tarver would turn up at Jones's Press Conferences, time after time, slagging him and shouting, why won't you fight me, be a man, come and fight me. Tarver caught Jones the exact same way Lou Del Valle did in 98, the difference was, Del Valle was Class B, Tarver, Class A.

@@wes276 With the Greatest of respect to you, it has nothing to do with weight. Tarver was The Best Fighter Jones fought since he beat a weight drained and totally out of condition, J Toney in late 94. J Jackson, G Mc Clellan and N Benn, are 3 of the Biggest Punchers the MW and SMW Divisions have ever seen in the last 40 years, yet Jones never fought any of them as a Professional, as a matter of fact, Mc Clellan beat him in their only meeting as Amateurs. How do you know, or anyone else for that matter, know if he could take these Guys best shots? Jones didn't improve as a Fighter after the Toney fight, how could he, he was so used to beating up Guys like Pazienza, Lucas, Thornton, Brannon, Hall, Frazier, Woods and Mc Callum, Hill and Johnson, whose best days were gone. He should have been fighting Nunn, Mc Clellan and Jackson, between 93-94 at MW. Eubank, Liles, Benn and Collins at SMW, between 94-96. When he entered the LHW scene, he should have fought both Rocchegianni and Michalczewski, between 97-99, and took their Titles from them in the Ring, instead of stealing them and winning their Titles from Del Valle and Johnson, who won their Titles because they were stolen from Michalczewski. There are ways about going around claiming to be Undisputed, like the way Lewis did, he beat a Murderers Row of HWs, to get to the Top, Guys like Morrison, Botha, Golota, Tua, Ruddock, Holyfield, Tyson, Klitschko, etc, hid from no one, and avenged his only 2 Defeats, that's how its done.

Watching this fight, Prime Roy was nothing short of miraculous, a master painter sending heads to the canvas with a mere flick of his brush. Superlative skills, nothing short of exceptional boxing mind and honed through years of training. All old school skills apparent with god given athleticism. One thing though, he tended to retreat to the ropes, and while on them he only sparsely attacked. You can see how Griffin and Futch developed that game plan that later Johnson and Tarver capitalized on. You can say they only had limited success or would not have done so in his prime, but the flaws are clear here. Also, RJJ can clearly fight inside.

Lotta Roy haters out there but he's the most gifted boxer I've ever seen. Clinton Woods was a quality opponent. James Toney, Mike McCallum, and Bernard Hopkins are HOF fighters. Montell Griffin was a quality opponent. Virgil Hill was a quality opponent. Thomas Tate was a quality opponent. Reggie Johnson was a quality opponent. I could list off nearly every fighter of relevance from 154-175 from 1994-2003 and Roy didn't just beat, he practically white-washed ALL of them, with one exception and that's Dariusz Michalczewski. And neither guy was willing to travel out of their respective countries to fight the other guy. Personally, I say Jones was the kingpin and DM should have come over here if he wanted to be in the discussion. If after defeating Ruiz for the WBA hvywt title he had retired, I'd say he's the GOAT. Since he didn't, he's in the conversation but my opinion isn't cut and dried.
@francishegarty8087
@francishegarty8087 4 ай бұрын
Having read your comments here , I admire your mention of Dariusz Michalczewski , he most certainly was an excellent LHW and the only multiple Titles holder in that weight , to be unbeaten in the 90s and still holds the record number of defences of his LHW Titles to this day . My arguments against Jones and his 3 years spell at LHW in the 90s , late 96 to late 99 are not by the guys he beat like Griffin , DelValle , Johnson and some others but rather than some guys he didn't fight , namely , Dariusz Michalczewski and the late Graciano Rocky Rochigiani because of politics and blatant robbery of the Titles these guys held , Rocky WBC , DM , WBO , WBA , IBF and Lineal Titles . DM was the true LHW King after dethroning Hill , DM , the WBO Champion , added Hills WBA , IBF and Lineal Titles only for the cheats of the WBA and IBF to strip him of them without even allowing him to defend them in the Ring , if that didn't happen in 97 , then Jones or anyone else willing to try Unite that Division and become Undisputed , would have had to fight him , that was scandalous but worse was to follow when Jones would drop the only Title in his name , WBC LHW , late 97 to avoid Nunn then sit back and watch the WBCs No 1, Nunn and No 2 , Rocky , fight for the vacated Title in early 98 and then come back to the WBC and beg for. his Title , which he got it back then unashamedly ducked Rocky . In early 99 , the WBC sanctioned Jones to fight 39 years old Semi Professional Boxer , full time NYPD Police officer Ricky Frazier , Boxrec 18-3-1 , rather than force him to fight Rocky who was willing to fight him in the US , shocking carry on and blatant ducking and diving by Jones and the WBC and when he beat Reggie Johnson for the IBF Title later on in 99 , he tried to claim to be Undisputed because he also held the WBA and WBC Titles , seriously as the unbeaten DM was still WBO and Lineal Titles holder and Rocky was the Legitimate WBC Champion , was proved in a Federal Court of Law in NYC in 2003 . We'll probably never know the full truth as to why Jones and DM never fought but I do know why Jones didn't fight Rocky , he was way too dangerous despite what the vast majority of Jones fans think and actually put him down but that's how it went unfortunately 🥊🥊

Woods wasn't a great fighter, but he was a decent one who could match many of the contenders at world level, and I was impressed at how well he did in this fight (because I expected Roy Jones to make easy work of him). I think he gave a great performance here, he was determined and focused and carried out his proclaimed game plan about as well as he could have done, and landed a lot of punches on prime Roy Jones. Ultimately of course, he wasn't the exceptional fighter he needed to be to beat Roy, but he put in a great effort.

Roy Jones was very good in this fight ,but to say he would have beat Joe Calzhagi is dreaming ...Joe never lost a fight ,had a granite jaw and he would never have lost to Roy Jones ..Joe was 36 himself when he retired undefeated after destroying a fading Jones junior... I don’t know why Roy didn’t go ahead & fight Tarver right after this, THEN go up to fight Ruiz. I still think Tarver would’ve given Jones problems because of his style but Roy would’ve faired far better than he did, and wouldn’t have to worry about yo-yoing your weight

This is the version of Jones that should have taken on Tarver. He should have fought Tarver before he went up to HW. Would have been a tough fight, but we would truly know how Jones would have staked up against Tarver. The Jones that fought Tarver didn’t have the amazing speed, reflexes, legs and power, as exhibited in this fight. Would have been a very different fight. This was a different Jones, compared to the one who came down from HW.
