This is a really sick design, I got one myself that I put together, and I love it... Except for one thing, the L/R buttons do not feel good once put together. This is because the springs used on the L/R buttons are omitted, and have a different feel in the end and it's not something I'm a fan of. But something to keep in mind if you're planning on getting this.
@iamtheflu3 жыл бұрын
I also was able to build one. IMHO, the shoulder buttons are fine, but do lose some tactile feel without the springs. In my case, I had to do extra fitment to the rear lcd cover as it was pressing too hard on the back of my screen. Boxy let me know, after discussing it with him, that he adjusted his specs on his cad model to fix it for future batches though. I wish I went with the blue anodizing, but I still love the black with the brass buttons that I chose. Now I have to get some enamel paint to color the power switch and shoulder buttons.
@Eight-Bytes3 жыл бұрын
@@iamtheflu I don't see why the springs had to go in all honesty. Maybe not everyone feels the same, but for me it's almost a deal breaker. Part of the reason why I'm not actually currently using it to play my games. I'm glad the back cover is being revised, I had the same issue where it was pressing onto the screen.
@iamtheflu3 жыл бұрын
Granted, this really makes us beta testers, but I'm not angry about it. I'm more of a small electronics hobbiest than a gamer, so tinkering with it was a lot of fun. Boxy had said, to me, that he didn't anticipate how wildly the the screen thickness varied due to the way funnyplaying glued the glass to the lcd panels. Between you, me, and some guy on reddit (maybe more) it seems like that's currently the big issue. I believe there should be a way to incorporate the shoulder button springs back into the design, but you'd have to place the shoulder buttons into the rear shell first, which may make installation more difficult. Wonder if that was boxy's dillema.
@Eight-Bytes3 жыл бұрын
@@iamtheflu When you put it that way, I guess I understand. I'm honestly pretty happy with it, having built it and all. But for the people that actually wanna play the system, I can see people disliking this. However, I do hope maybe in the future Boxypixel puts the springs back onto the design.

12:38 Standard wireless charging can't transmit through metal. It would need to be replaced with a nonmetal back. This is the reason why no phones have metal backs anymore.
@crystalcove993 жыл бұрын
I like that you commented about having a plastic option available for this shell. Basically my first thought when I first saw the shell a couple weeks ago was, "Why can't this be plastic so I can actually AFFORD it?" There is definitely a market for it.
@joshbarnes92673 жыл бұрын
I think the point of creating something like this is to have a high-end, durable option for the GBA SP enthusiast. The fact that it doesn't have a hinge is merely out of circumstance, since the metal would make it too heavy to function properly over a long period of time. I think people are looking at this as primarily a hinge-less version of the GBA SP that also happens to be metal, when really it's the other way around. Though I do agree that there would be a market for a plastic version, but I'd worry about the top snapping off since it is so thin. It couldn't exist in plastic in this current design. Just my two cents really.
@theoriginaloats38903 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. I’ve never been a huge fan of the metal case trend, but I love the form factor of the pocket brought into the age of GBA games. I wish it was available in at least like a white and clear so we could paint them if he didn’t want to carry all of the plastic colors
@crystalcove993 жыл бұрын
@@joshbarnes9267 I see where you're coming from. I didn't even think about the fact that the top half of the shell would be quite fragile if plastic, so the design would have to be adjusted. I appreciate hearing your opinion.
@Man_of_Oil3 жыл бұрын
It’s satisfying multiple niches. Maybe the hinge was only removed out of necessity but we’re also seeing an obvious demand here for a dedicated hingeless experience that doesn’t also have all the bells and whistles of an expensive metal casing. I think it’s more than possible for them to do that with a high enough quality plastic

@adam_odell 'official' it's easier when it comes to order fulfillment. There is a separate choice for button material and color and body color. Besides, there is a drop down menu on the body kit page to select button choice to add them to the cart at the same time. People just have an issue with how you need to buy his expensive buttons to use the body, but custom buttons were necessary for the design. Because it's either custom thicker buttons or relocating the shoulder button switches and deleting the charge/link ports. Otherwise there's be no room to put the screen above the controls. If you go onto thingiverse, there is an stl file for a similar 3d printed body for the gba sp. But lo and behold, once inside the body, there are no shoulder buttons or charge/link ports.

honestly, for the USB C, argument for it is you won't need to use a specialized charger specific to the console, you can just use any USB C cable you have laying around, so there's a practical reason to have it, especially since as time goes on original chargers will continue to die out, leaving just cheap aftermarket ones

The scratching on the cartridges is probably a tolerancing issue not a material issue. Or even just a small burr left over from machining. Easily sorted! Also there’s no such thing as “high grade” aluminium. Just different alloys of aluminium. Once the programming and first off has been done for these they can be pumped out, so the price does seem a little bit on the high side. Probably double the markup from the shop making them. But... credit where it’s due it looks lovely. I wish them well ☺️

That usb c charging board is a standard board. if you search "usb c charge controller" on ali express for eg. the same thing can be found for almost the same price so at least his not gouging you on the price.. its just not his board that's all.. also they can be had for as low as 60c if you want to do usb mini or micro but that wont fit in this shell... or you just buy a lot of them at once... They are meant to be used with 1000mAh 18650 batteries and cant exceed 1A charging current no matter what plug is on it. there over all a good board for the price and if your not building any 8000mAh battery banks.

I assembled mine pretty easily, even as someone new to soldering it didn't take too long. I just would like a design like this one, that loads that cartage at the top like an old DMG. Even with the L and R buttons, I think it would be very possible. A more affordable option would be great too, yeah. The metal feels awesome, but the best form factor of any handheld I own is an original DMG made of OEM plastic.

+1 on the plastic case suggestion. Especially a clear one. I love the design but can't justify paying a premium for metal.
