"Six-year-old Drayden Nelson went out on the Kotzebue sound with family to do some subsistence ice fishing. Drayden pulled up his very first siifish. Drayden was amazed at how big his shii fish was which was the exact same height as him which came out to be 46 inches long."

If he didn't help him he'd be a horrible dad, kid wasn't even wearing gloves, fishing line is so thin and strong it has cut the fingers of sailors if they grab it wrong and the fish does enough strength or is heavy enough, has even cut through gloves, so, i think safest thing that a father should do if having their little kid go fishing, is get them some thick strong gloves to avoid hand injury when pulling the string

Like the jar meme where person after person ask to open the jar. it's not just about learning for himself but it let's him take pride in the independent success of such a big catch. great group of guys.

I love that they let him do it himself and just encouraged him to keep pulling. As an early childhood educator I see so many parents stepping in to "help" when they're child can do it themselves with some effort. It is a chance to learn when children encounter something difficult. Also, it builds self confidence for children to accomplish something on their own.
@SAHMmiller
@SAHMmiller 2 жыл бұрын
@Ryan Paradis I agree, I wasn't given a lot of chances to try when I was a child either and now failures feels worse than they really are and I struggle with feeling competent as an adult. I'm just very glad to have gone to school for early childhood or I would have never known this and kept creating the same scenario for the children in my care. I've had a few people (other staff, directors, etc.) get angry at me for letting children take off their shoes and try to put them on, rip pages of books while trying to turn the pages, things like that. I always tell them about how important it is for them to try, make mistakes, and experience life. It may be inconvenient for adults, but it helps the child develope for a successful future:)

@daydream fishing line isn't weak....it can hold a curtain amount of weight especially when ice fishing.
@user-mb9ke5dz7l
@user-mb9ke5dz7l 2 жыл бұрын
@daydream Looks like they wound a bunch of finishing line around some kind of warped stick or bow so that the line stays taut between the two ends of the bow. At first I thought it was a string tied to a handsaw, like something the kid made while sitting there bored. Like when I was a kid fishing with my dad I'd always get bored, get a stick off of a tree, & tie a length of fishing line + hook to it. Then I'd try to catch fish with it. However in the video I realized it's not a handsaw but some sort of bow or warped stick. I wouldn't say it's flimsy but I'm not sure the reasoning behind it. There's no reel or anything. I've never been ice fishing, is tying a fishing line to a bow a normal thing in ice fishing? I guess you wouldn't need a mechanical reel when ice fishing since you don't need to cast the line or anything. You just drop it the hook & line straight down in.

I remember catching my first fish aged about 7. I remember it was a big fish, and that my older brother who was In his 20s at the time, and had took me fishing, said that on the way home he would drop it in at the local fish and chip shop where they would prep and cook it for us to eat later that night. And it tasted a axing. The best fish and chips if my life. It was until I was nearly 40, and this memory came up in my mind, when I realised that our local fishing lake had river fish and didn't contain cod, so where I did catch a giant fish I never got to eat it as it was a catch and release fishing lake, and I spent 35 years thinking I got to eat my catch. Doesn't spoil the memory. I think it's nice that my brother wanted me to have the full experience of catching the fish and getting to eat the fish, although it wasn't really the fish that I caught.
