In this drama, each time Ziqiu character appeared on screen - be it the child actor or Steven Zhang - I found myself crying uncontrollably. There was something in the way they both spoke, how their eyes gleamed, seeming to reflect the depth of sorrow for the tragedies they had endured, just something in the way both actors embodied Ziqiu... Something so heartbreaking about his existence that made me feel so utterly helpless. It was the way that his persona was built around a core of insecurity - his relationship with abandonment. The child, the teen, the adult - all those three ever wanted, was a home that Ziqiu could always belong to, somewhere no one could just show up to claim him or abandon him, no one could remind him of his belonging or non-belonging, and someplace he didn't have to be "worthy" of. Each time he was let down, I cried for him - not just because I felt his pain but also because I knew that he'd push himself to get over it and soldier on, never being compensated for all the unwarranted hurt he had endured. He grew up under the mindset that he's all alone, that he's a liability (due to the incessant guilt-tripping) and no one is "obliged" to have his back. In his abandonment, he grew out of the need to be claimed. I strongly believe that Ziqiu was one of the best characters ever written for a TV show. He embodied the kind, secure selflessness and warmth of his adoptive father as well as the independence, headstrong sensibility and sense of responsibility that his mother had - always sacrificing himself not only for the happiness of others, but also to protect his own integrity. I loved this character with everything I had. I wish we got to see more of him after the main conflict of the show had been resolved, perhaps just the progress in his business and in life otherwise.
