Great video. I say put the char cloth on top of the flint . And back in the day a lot of boy scout flint and steel sets the steel needed to be tempered. Throw it in a hot fire get it so a magnet will not stick to it and then quench it in oil . Then you have to temper it. Put in a oven or toster over at 300to400 degrees. for few hours. That will temper it. Hope this helps. Do the same if you are going to make a knife with file or steal . God bless. From Glenn CATT. In Massachusetts. You can use water. But I think oil is better.

What was the original tinder that looks like brown fiber wool like material?

The char cloth isn't supposed to catch on fire. It's supposed to create an ember and glow, so you can transfer the glowing ember to the tinder as you blow on it, and the tinder catches fire. You shouldn't be laying on the ground or kneeling in the mud. That's how pioneers got wet and froze to death. Practice the technique in the garage on a table, so you can do it in the yard.

Those instructions should go in the trash. In stead, hold a bit of the tinder with your fingers to the edge of the flint, and strike that edge of the flint to the steel, so the sparks go directly into the tinder. You should be reading the instructions and practicing indoors or in the garage in the first place!
