What a great video. I just completed building a stock for my four year old son for his Romanian M1969 .22 caliber bolt action rifle, where I cut down a beat up original, added a paduak nose and curved butt plate, and the instructions here allowed me to do a finish that looked like the stock had jumped off the pages of a magazine. Well done, Mr. Boyd. Between you and Larry Potterfield, I don;t think there is anything I can't handle on my own.

Just a plug for Boyds... I ordered one of there stocks for my long range Mosin build and this thing is gorgeous! At first I didn't know if I wanted to spend this much on the old MN but after getting it, its worth twice what they actually cost IMHO. I was considering an ATI but after getting one on another mosin, the Boyds is superior! Knocks the ATI's ding-ding in the dirt! Besides that, their customer service is top notch! Next time im in the market for an aftermarket gunstock, they have my business!

Usually they are intrigued by the SS Evolutions uniqe shape, but they soon compliment me on the finish. Thanks for the great tutorial! I am a Gunsmith student in my 3rd year of the night program (3 nights a week 4 hours per night) at Piedmont Community college in Roxboro NC. I am working on my first build which is using a Mauser 98 receiver. I have chambered it 30-06. My KZbin page has a video from a few weeks ago and I plan on putting another one up, I hope tonight, depending on snow and if school is closed. I am trying to research to find the best finish for my stock.

Nothing but respect for Boyd's... I read a story recently about the M1 Garand Stock they made for Darrel "Shifty" Powers (of Band of Brother's Fame). The Garand Stock had the Airborne emblem, Curahee Crest, etc engraved into it. A very well-thought idea and certainly worthy of praise. Google "a rifle for Shifty" to see the whole story. I just finished refinishing a stock for a ww2 Trench Gun. I cheated a bit and used red oak stain and 2 coats of Linseed oil (matches my Garand exactly)

I think the video is good enough as a tutorial on how to finish a stock using the True-Oil method and Mr. Boyd is kind enough to share his knowledge with everyone. For those who think the image quality is not good enough or complain about the audio, keep in mind that before Internet and KZbin instructions came in a booklet with no pictures or bad ones at the most. Stop complaining or making fun of people or post something yourselves, mediocre bastards...

@njmvermont I don't know what action or stock you're looking for, but go to Boyds website and choose your action to see what stock configuration are available then look for the Forest Camo Laminate. It may be what you're looking for. Boyds' finished stocks are not glossy, they are a Satin Finish. Hope this helps.

I have a 98 Mauser small ring action with a .25-06 target barrel screwed on that my dad was building before he died. I've decided I'd like to finish it. I really like the looks of the FA Enterprise target stock, but the only place I saw them is on MidwayUSA and it says they've been discontinued. Do you guys have a comparable one? It won't let me post the link, but it looks just like a thumb-hole style, but without the piece above the thumb.
@boydsgunstocks11 жыл бұрын
The kit also contains stain for walnut stocks that you won't need for laminate. So if you have your sanding supplies, tru-oil is all you need. If you follow the video, you should end up with a santin finish.Not too shiny. Good Luck!!
@boydsgunstocks11 жыл бұрын
Yes, unless of course you are ordering a Mauser Stock. We do not put a bolt cut in Mausers, this is left to the customer.
@Condor197012 жыл бұрын
I just purchased a walnut stock from Boyd's. After all the proper sanding, and fitting, why would you apply the Birchwood Casey Walnut stain? Wouldn't you just apply the Tru-Oil finish by itself to accentuate the best grain? Isn't the Walnut stain basically just used for brich stocks, to make them darker and more even colored?
@boydsgunstocks11 жыл бұрын
Laminate will not take the stain as well as walnut. The laminate is already impregnated with dye. We have quite a few color options.

On our military stocks we do use Tru-Oil finish, on our traditional stocks we offer a clear satin lacquer as the standard finish, with an option to upgrade to high gloss. Also a lacquer.

I really don't know what the difference would be in the Savage 11 vs. the 11 Hog Hunter. We make stocks for the Savage 11 Bottom Bolt release and the Top Bolt release Rifles. There are quite a few different ones, so look them over and compare the Center to Center measurements on your action screws. Go to the web site and select you make, model, action to see what we all have. if your measurements match, you're good to go. You can always call sales at 605-996-5011.

I may have. I removed my comment as to not confuse anyone else. I was going for a gloss finish which is much harder to do than a satin. Every little finger or brushstroke shows up with a gloss finish. The spray tru-oil wasn't any easier. (low pressure can w/ lots of orange peel) Ended up doing a spray lacquer instead. Turned out fair. Still love the stock design though.

I am extremely upset with you guys right now. I have ordered a gunstock for my BMag. I have no issues with the stock itself but there is no magazine catch. I waited intially about 4-6 weeks for the gunstock, no problem. I then called about the issue and you sent me another trigger guard about a month later. Again, I gave you another call, explained the issue in detail, waited another 3 weeks only to find out they sent me another trigger guard for the 3rd time. Do your stock come with a magazine catch for the Savage B-Mag? The plastic one that comes on the Savage will not just drop on. There has to be a solution. I think I have spoke to the same gal that answers the phone twice and I cannot seem to get a magazine catch for the model stock I purchased. Do you provide a magazine catch for the B-Mag bull barrelled stock?

On the advice of our legal department, we choose to limit the sale of certain products that could be perceived as restricted in certain areas. This is due to the difficulty maintaining knowledge of, the sometimes ambiguous, state and local laws. Only select items such as AR-15 stocks and certain semi-auto models have restricted sales in CA, IL, NY, NJ, MA, & DC. We apologize for this inconvenience.

You are better off sanding and finishing the stock yourself. Boyd"s does an average job at best, and they don't take the time to sand everything smooth. they also failed to check their inletting for fitment. This is a company where you don't get what you pay for.
