It's honestly sad, I was super excited about boyfriends when it first popped on webtoons. It seemed like the perfect book for me. Being a gay man who loves all things cutesy and squishable I really connected with the artstyle... then I found out about how AWFUL it actually was. The characters are annoying and stereotypical. They are whiney and seem to be written from the point of view of someone that sees gay men as yaoi material. Then the "Nerd" character apparently ships childXadult relationships canonically alongside the artist fetishizing underage people irl? Prep is ridiculous, yes some people can act childish and say goofy shit but TO SOMEONE YOU AREN'T IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH YET OR IN PUBLIC!?!?!! Then goth is probably the ONLY character that is somewhat human alongside jock but what's worse is that THEY DO NOT HAVE FUCKING NAMES... they are SOLELY their stereotype. It's... honestly wasted potential. Having been in a poly once years ago, I know that experiencing this would make me want to vomit. Poly's are terrible if you don't have much relationship experience because there are a lot of complicated feelings, jealousy, and drama. I got kicked out of it because the person who started the poly, the one I was originally with, noticed I got really really jealous because I had feelings for him only. The other person was annoyed by me for every little habit that I had, such as apologizing a lot, and would often yell at me with the other taking his side. Feelings are complicated and this comic just throws them out of the roof and replaces them with the most emotionless characters. They don't really even feel like people, just objects to progress the creator's weird kinks. Uncomfortable experience to read and bring back bad memories, while also being complete brainrot. 0/10

While definitely not the worst webtoon, I feel a bit weird when reading Boyfriends. It isn't really fetishisation, considering the fact that the author is also gay. I think the artstyle is fairly good, but also feels a bit stereotypical (?) in a sense, since it's not very unique, and the only reason I remember exactly what the art looks like is due to so many videos on it just popping up on my recommendations in KZbin. Then again, I can't really say much negative things on the artstyle, since I also have quite the cutesy artstyle so..... Anyways I like Jock, he's not perfect, but every other character doesn't really act like an actual person (specifically Nerd // Prep). Yes, this is fictional, but the writing could at least be better, so it's not too painful for others to read it. Having a pet - play kink (?) is a bit odd, but as long as it's done between two consenting adults, there's not too much wrong with it. Also, trying to defend this webcomic, and insulting anyone who tries to say anything negative about it ( + calling them homophobic ), is not the best move. Yes, people want sweet, wholesome LGBT+ representation, but Boyfriends isn't done 100% right in my opinion ( as a bisexual ). The characters are mostly one-dimensional, and all the conflict that even happens, are all resolved in no time. None of the " humour " is really funny, and a lot of it should be kept out. For what is, from what I've seen, usually paraded around by others as a webcomic about a " cute polyamorous relationship ", I personally find it a bit lacking. Not related, but somehow I find the author's description funnier than the entirety of his own webcomic. ' My name is Ray and I draw boys kissing for a living. '
