Absolutely superb episode!! Baa Baa Black Sheep was a show I loved as a kid. Robert Conrad and Simon Oakland were great and I loved the planes. Never took the time to learn the real story though, this help me start to fix that.

Wow! Black Sheep One is so detailed about family and historical background for Boyington. This is a remarkable book. History the way I love it with the characters being real people and not just two dimensional. I'm loving this book.

Thank you Bruce & Paul, a fantastic and informative show about the 'Black Sheep' Squadron 214 and Pappy Boyington. Was fortunate enough to see an F4U Corsair flying at Fairford and another air show a few years ago, absolutely awesome WW2 aircraft. Even when you cut through the hyperbole & PR, what this squadron did was impressive.

Great show about a well-known USMC fighter squadron that focuses on the actual guys who fought the Japanese. Boyington was a good pilot and outstanding commander and a fantastic exaggerator of his own exploits. The lies suited the publicity needs of the Marines, who gave him credit for downed airplanes he did not deserve.

Father of a Marine artilleryman here. You're damned straight that Marines have a panache, a sense of "fuck with the best, die like the rest". He doesn't know much about Pappy, but he sure as hell knows about Pedro. Marines do learn their own history. I've read both of Mr Gamble's books about 214 and Pappy, and it was informative to do so after having digested BBBS and Pappy's self-serving memoir. Myth-busting is good.

The US Naval Air & Space Museum on NAS Pensacola in Pensacola FL always has a Corsair in the Major Boyington paint scheme on display. The US Navy flight demonstration teams practices are free to watch also from the museums tarmac if you schedule your visit to coincide with a Blue Angels practice.

I read Bruce's history of VMF 214 several years ago and found it most interesting. I found his discussed of NAP's also interesting. If you have read WEB Griffin's series The Corps, one of the characters was an NAP before being commissioned after Pearl Harbor.

Just saw a video of a California company that is restoring a razorback F4U-1 to flight status. That particular aircraft had once served with VMF-214 when they were the "Swashbucklers". It has been a lengthy restoration due to the complexity of the Corsair.

BTW, the bent wings was for two reasons: to have clearance for the huge prop and to get the gear short enough to put up with carrier crash, errrr, landings.

If you've never heard a Corsair at full-chat go find an airshow that has one. The sound is both awesome and scary. Some beast that gull-wing.

This presentation did a great credit to the real story of VMF 214 that was so misrepresented by the seriously flawed television series "Baa Baa Blacksheep." That didn't stop me from watching it as a youth, but now we know "The rest of the story" as the late Paul Harvey would have said.

Excellent video as usual... u do a great job, this is transformational for me. Can u ask Bruce have u ever heard of a pilot named George Finucan, he was my uncle, and he an my dad would never talk war stories...(I would catch them sometimes). my dad was in the occupation troops in Berlin after ww2, my Uncle George said he flew a Corsair in the Pacific after joining the navy aviators and asked to join the Marine aviators... but, we could never get much out of him....(like many of our ww2 vets). Can u find anything on him? His widow and kids, and grandkids might like to know and I would love to know....later he was a pilot for a company in Michigan

well, pappy said he was part indian ... he certainly had a war party ! Lord of the fliers. Low level bombing sometimes damaged their aircraft since bombs moving at same speed of aircraft so explode right under the aircraft. Jets can out run bullets and apparently jets can also catch up with their decelerating cannon shells. Like Einstein said it's all kinda relative.

I can see how you could misread the title. The “y” does look like a “v”, but to me I looked at the slide itself and note the flight gear and airplanes in the back ground. Plus the fact that I’m familiar with the topic of the show. But I do see your point.
