I wish I knew what this song was about. It has a great sound and the lyrics are definitely interesting...but they get extremely confusing at times. Is this about his son undergoing a sex change operation?? Cuz if not, I am pretty sure it doesn't make much sense.

It's about his son being gay but ashamed of telling his dad that he's gay and his dad knows this and he's also aware that he won't come out of the closet as long as he is alive. When he was little he heard his dad talk lowly of gay people not realizing his son was actually gay and not realizing he was giving his son a complex. Now that his son is grown he realizes what he mistakingly did and how foolish it was to talk badly of gay people bc he truly loves his son and doesn't care that he's gay. He knows his son is so perplexed about his feelings that he will just remain alone his whole life rather than get married and remember all the things his dad told him about gays and feel ashamed. It's easier to be alone. His dad knows he won't get married as long as he's living but thinks he may after he dies.

Kathryn Fisher just noticed this reply now after several years. Thanks for responding. So when he says “you’re a lady without warning” is he basically making fun of his son? This was the part where I concluded it’s about a sex change. I’m not gay, so I don’t presume to know, but I would think being called a lady by your father would be extremely insulting. Suppose that’s why he follows it with “and I’ve been loyal mean”....it’s a really good song, but I still find it somewhat confusing even after your great explanation. He kinda slips back & forth between stubbornness & understanding. Maybe it’s meant to be that way.
