@whyme7996 Individuals express emotions differently. However, in this particular instance, Leonardo didn't say he didn't convey comensurate emotions, but rather that in the first part of the song it was more literal and musically technical, and it wasn't until later in the song that he brought the believable emotion to the performance. That had nothing g to do with race and everything to do with the individual performance. Obviously, I agree that cultures are different and do present things in their own way, just as everyone isn't equal, we aren't all the same. Race or culture just wasn't relevant in this case

I explained that it didn’t need to be strong and loud to have emotion… I don’t have an issue with the build up. Listen to Slash’s solo in “Don’t Cry” (Guns N Roses). He makes that guitar cry, that’s storytelling. Singers everywhere are telling stories on 3 levels… lyrically, melodically, and emotionally. Rob had lyrics and melody… he lacked emotion in the first two verses. At the end, he did beautifully filling in those spaces on all 3 levels. I loves this version.

'playing' the tone and do do doos I appreciate your criticism. I love this version, and how respectful of the original the boys are. I think that the story is the build-up: Rob at the start is trying to hold it together, Austin is when the emotions leak out and as the song progresses, Rob's facade cracks and the passion takes over until the last notes, he can't even speak his need.

Perhaps understanding the acapella formula, explained beautifully by Shawn Stockman if you can find that clip, it would help your assessment of acapella music. It's not supposed to follow the same formula as traditional music in their respective genres. It's comparing apples to oranges. In acapella, you're NOT SUPPOSED to put all of the power in the beginning. To sing it as you suggested it would just become a bunch of chaotic noise with some tight harmonies in the background. When people overdo it with emotions it's as much as a turnoff as if there were no emotions (and that's with any genre, acapella or not.)

I also love this version and how Rob sings it, but I can hear Rob performing it the way you are describing it. Fans need to accept that people will need different expressions in different parts of songs, because in the end music speaks to our ears AND emotions. HF made their choice, but even live HF performs their recorded songs differently as the inspiration (and practicality) strikes them. I find your reaction very constructive. Your critique comes from a world of music experiences different to our own. I was bummed you didn't love the whole thing, but I get where you're coming from. I love all HF's songs post Austin Brown joining the group. There is one song where I had a similar reaction to what you had here. Kenny Rogers passed away during lockdown and HF put together one of their brilliant lockdown videos as a tribute to Kenny. They performed my favourite 'Coward Of The County'. Chance started and then Tim continued. I felt that Chance should have sung the whole song, because for me Tim didn't have enough grit in his voice. I liked the song, but always that little 'what if'. I adore HF, but even I will call Austin out when he goes off key during their live shows. We all know that Austin is a brilliant performer and singer, but sometimes he isn't able to hear himself live or loses concentration (I don't know). You can tell that he is aware of it potentially happening and the stress shows before they start a song. It endears him to me even more. It takes guts and hard work to perform live at this level and risk a slip anyway. It's that human quality that makes HF so special. So don't worry, your reaction was valid and very well presented. I already can't wait for your next HF reaction.

Thank you! I feel the same way about my favorite bands, I love their music and love their sound but when I hear them live and hear the lead singer struggle to hit a note or they sing flat, I am the first to say, "He really blew it!" I'm a musician myself, my great grandfather played, my grandfather played, my mother played and I play, I've taught guitar to many kids, I've coached and co-directed plays at a music academy... I know what I'm talking about. In retrospect, I admit, I could have conveyed my message differently to avoid confusion, but I think I was fair in my approach. So, thank you for pointing out what you did. Having said all of that, I started this HF journey because someone suggested it and I pointed out that I am not a fan of a cappella groups because of their theatrical, "Glee Club" approach to music. After listening to them, I admitted that there might be something to this group that I am missing out on, so I continued my journey. I admitted that I like THIS group, and I will continue to be honest about their performances. I will be respectful, and honest. They all sound great and they have great balance in their range. BTW, I got the same reaction from Alley Sherlock's fans when I critiqued her cover of Radiohead's "Creep". I was not a fan, but her fans called me all kinds of names because I wasn't into her like they were.

"In my humble yet accurate opinion" o_O What an a$$hole line. LOL I reckon this may be a case of someone being attached to an original a tad too much to be objective about the cover. This song is a classic, we’re not talking about Hanson’s MBop… it’s Boyz 2 Men. I wasn’t being disrespectful to HF, they’re the only a cappella group that I like.

I personally like that Rob doesn't start off 0-60 right out of the gate. For me, this song crescendos and climaxes very well. I like that it builds. I do personally think that some of your critiques are a little too based on your love of the original or your own views of what music is supposed to be. For me, personally, I view technical expertise as a form of emotion in and of itself. To have technical expertise shows a deep respect for your craft and emits an emotion in and of itself. If I'm being honest, the examples of when you were singing, I actually preferred the examples you gave of what you believed was not preferable. Rob has a naturally brighter quality to his voice, so he won't sound like he's putting as much diaphragm behind it without more push, and that can come off as forced and unnatural if it's not a climactic part of the song. I don't think your critiques were harsh. They just weren't objective but were presented as such. I'm glad you liked it, though.

I get what you’re saying, thank you for saying it respectfully. I want to clarify something, I didn’t want him to go from 0-60 right out of the gate, I wanted the appropriate amount of emotion that the lyrics require. I was comparing a few things between the old song and this one just for the sake of comparing, I didn’t mean to come across like I wanted it to be exact copy. I respectfully disagree about the technical expertise being a form of emotion. Singers who are focused on the technique have to pull the emotion out, where an emotional person uses the emotion to push the voice out. It’s subtle but there’s a huge difference and you can tell where the attention is.
@sjenny5891 Жыл бұрын
The critique. Rob definitely warmed up to the emotions as the song progressed. I agree. It was spot on technically, but I didn't initially feel the emotion either. You said it in the other video every person views things in their own way. This is your personal opinion. How do you truly get to know someone if you tell them that doesn't matter?

While I'm definitely a fan of Home Free. I also totally get what you're saying about the emotion and the story and the message of a song. I hadn't really thought about that part of it for their song before. But I can see that while it's all sung very well a bit more evidence of the emotions of heartbreak at the start would have made it even better. There are definitely other songs of theirs that are better for this element of converting emotions. Although as you say yourself there's a lot more of that that comes out at the end.

@@LeonardoTorresMusic As much as I love many singers and groups, the best ones are always open to constructive criticism that will further improve their performance. That's what keeps them improving and growing as artists. I know you don't expect everyone to agree with you, but I'm sorry that you have to deal with those who can't be nice about it. It's amazing the amount of difference it makes when you believe someone means what they're singing or saying. It's probably the thing that frustrated me most about some singers when they don't. Mostly when I've heard some singers in the main talent shows in America and the UK. With happy songs it's not so obvious, though sometimes even with those I can feel like telling me the singer to actually tell their face they're happy. But definitely with songs of heartbreak, longing, confusion or even anger and those kind of emotions you lose a lot when you don't believe they understand our have experienced what they're singing about. I think a good example of this is a young version of Tom Jones a Welsh singer, he's quite famous but not everyone has heard of him, singing "(It looks like) I'm never going to fall in love again". The video is black and white, but it's live and the emotion is real. Up to you if you want to react to it on video or just for yourself.

Leornardo, I watched the original. There is definitely hurt and passion in the Boyz II Men’s original. Yeah, though Home Free kind of got it more toward the end, Boyz had it all the way through.

I liked the original version but was never in love with it. I do love the Home Free version and a true cover doesn't try to copy the original. They add their different spin on it and probably improve on the original. Either way, it's an artistic interpretation. It's particularly hard to do a riff upwards which Rob does. Doesn't the original have instrumentation? This is a pretty awesome version and these guys do an amazing job on this song.
@LeonardoTorresMusic2 жыл бұрын
I pointed out everything you just mentioned in my critique, I don’t want them to copy the original, I want them to preserve the spirit of the song and not sacrifice the storytelling for technique. I loved this cover and it was all positive.

I understand what you said about wanting more emotion early on. But here's a different theory. If you put all the emotion at the beginning, you don't have anywhere to take the song. I see it sort of like when you start a "discussion" with your significant other about a sensitive topic. You might start out very low key and logical, but things seem to escalate and by the end logic and "low key" have flown out the window. Just another view. Room for lots of views out here in the world. No right or wrong. Just different.
@LeonardoTorresMusic2 жыл бұрын
I understand, that's a valid theory. That can't be compared to this and this is why. This is story telling. I am not asking that Rob be as loud and expressive as he was at the end. The emotion Rob expressed didn't sell the story he as singing. That's all. I'm not calling him a bad singer, I'm not bashing him for it. Every artist has room for improvement, even Boyz II Men. I'm not asking for a Christina Aguilera intro, Rob was at a 7.5 on the expression notch... when I know he could have given a 9 or 10. That's all. Check out minute 15:51 where I address this point.

I’ve never heard the original so, for me, this is an awesome rendition of a song. I understand that you are critiquing based off of your experience with the song. IMHO, if Rob had brought in the growls and the angst at the beginning of the song, it would have had nowhere to go. I would ask that you listen to any cover by any artist as a new song instead of insisting that it must be just like the original. By your standards expressed here, you must absolutely hate Disturbed’s version of Sound of Silence.

First of all I am not a fanatic HOME FREE fan, no one is perfect. However, I absolutely and totally disagree with your comments expecting this group to show the Hurt and Emotions in the manner that you feel is required to perform this song. To want them to feel the hurt and emotion of the original song would have HOME FREE trying to imitate the BOYZ II MEN group. Home Free NEVER copies or duplicates the original song and in that respect you are wrong with your many criticisms of this performance. You obviously did not know that BOYZ II MEN was involved in this production. If I had a famous song and I was involved in the production I would not want the group to COPY my song so you need to change your approach to your reactions . . . IN MY OPINION. . . . 🙂

The difference here is that these are grown men singing as grown men not young men. I think expecting these men to have identical emotional responses to the story in the song is unrealistic. Also, much of what I think you are missing emotionally comes from the instrumentation that underlays the original version. Your jokes aren't landing as jokes. At all. Please, before you do another Home Free reaction learn their names. If you truly do appreciate their music, then show them the respect of knowing of whom you are speaking about. Check your Archie count...when I added it up it was 35. Brett's wife

I completely understand your take on this song. I disagree only slightly as I found the original by B2M slightly over emotional to start with leaving them not as much room to escalate at the climax. Thus I like this version slightly better. Just my opinion of course. Home Free’s remake of the Gambler is a better example of what you are talking about. The boys completely out sing Kenny Rogers technically but emotionally completely miss turning a country balled into a pop song. On the other side they took Crosby Stills and Nash’s song Helplessly Hoping and turning it into a masterpiece.

I get what you are saying but I disagree. You can't come out the gate with full emotion or else the song has nowhere to build to. I love the original but like this one a bit more. It comes down to a matter of preference but saying no one can do it seems like a foolish statement. There is always someone better than you eventually, it's the nature of the world.

I respect your objection and you can disagree… however, You didn’t get what I was saying. I didn’t ask for Full Emotion… I asked for the correct amount of emotion that helps us feel that what Rob was singing is true. I think you’re too close to HF to see what I am saying and your fanaticism clouds your judgment. It’s like Paul Rudd fans saying that the 2021 ghostbusters film was better than the original. I mean, it was good, and engaging and I loved it… but it’s not better than the original.
