Often did that at Glasgow Q St by mistake as it was buffered up to push the departing train up the hill through the tunnel. I even had a chap clamber in with his bike and 2 kids once..... Had to abandon the push up the hill...the train did make it out unassisted luckily.....best wishes...Mark

I used to stand at the end of platform 3 in the eighties. Seems like yesterday, looking at the destination leaflets in the windows, ‘Newton Abbot to Glasgow Central’ what a journey! Class 87s, they were the best 👍 Thanks
@geoffwalsh8864 Жыл бұрын
It's most likely that train would have started it's journey at Plymouth as intercity services generally didn't start or terminate at Newton Abbot and given it was scheduled to stop at Carstairs it probably was going to be split with one half going to Edinburgh.
@055deltic Жыл бұрын
@@geoffwalsh8864 Absolutely right. the service originated from Plymouth for Glasgow Central and Aberdeen (what a mileage!), dividing at Carstairs. Apart from the London/Inverness trains, the longest direct train I travelled on was in 1983, the 07.44 Dundee to Penzance IC125 service. Arriving in Penzance, I had time for fish'n'chips sitting on the promenade above the station, then back on the sleeper for Paddington. Those were the days!

I did exactly the same in the 70's. Managed to tick off every electric loco in the book through Preston - then started again from scratch. Nearly had them all again when I stopped in 1981. End of platform 3 - just pull up a trolley to sit on , get the flask and butties out and start spotting. I well remember a red faced driver getting a massive round of applause from the crowd as he walked up the ramp having just ran 86 212 off the end of the sidings across the main line and dropping the front bogie in the dirt back in 1977.

Really captures the scene I remember so well from that era, the Heysham Boat train (the "Bolton, Man Vic, Stockport" train that was unseen in P4 while the Blackpool was changing locos in P3), and even the "biggest Seven" makes an appearance at 29:20. Excellent.

I left Preston Station in 1987 and then flew from Heathrow to Canada for a six week vacation. Thirty Five years later I returned home through Preston to Burnley Rosegrove. I swear nothing had changed except for a second coffee shop on platform 3 :-) Back in Canada now I keep hoping someone would upload a cab ride video for the Preston to York train and back again.

With these lovely shots I m wondering when we might have an electrified heritage railway so we could have some lovely 86s 87s , 90s etc running. And while we’re at it, what about a third rail heritage in the South somewhere, for these lovely slam door units. No?
@Mitch-Hendren Жыл бұрын
Only problem there Michelle is its hard enough to Keep people off the tracks at heritage lines . Never mind third rail . Maybe if battery technology improves, it could be done using onboard batteries .

My dad loved trains, I grew up in Preston, and we would take the wonderful old Steam trains to Blackpool. That was before Beeching ruined the trains, cut back on routes and got rid of North Shore, and South Shore, I think the only station was eventually Blackpool Central. I remember train spotting and seeing The Flying Scotsman ! I left Preston when I was 19, and worked for British Airways at Heathrow, as an Air Hostess with BOAC ! I live in America now. It was great to hear the Station announcer’s Lancashire Lad accent ! Ee by gum ! If it’s no longer British Rail, who runs the trains nowadays? I must say that the station looks just as grubby as it always did. I was surprised and delighted to ride trains through Austria and Switzerland in the 1970’s; all the stations were spotless, well painted and with lots of hanging baskets of flowers. Thank goodness I can still buy Marmite and Digestive biscuits in the USA 😊 Thank you for posting this video❤

Another great video. I used to like seeing the portion trains at Waverley and was always interested in the coach formation of these trains. I got all excited when the Cornish Scot arrived at the end of the video for Glasgow and Aberdeen. I was looking forward to seeing the rear (Edinburgh) portion and then it failed and had to be reversed into the station! My prediction was RMB, TSO, TSO, BFK, TSO, TSO, BG. I think the announcer also got his stops mixed up for the Edinburgh portion he says, Haymarket, Edinburgh, Dundee, Inverkeithing, Dundee etc, it should be, Haymarket, Edinburgh, Haymarket, Inverkeithing, Dundee....... I see you seem to be heading north, hope you got to Waverley before the Sprinters took over!!!!
@spompey Жыл бұрын
Yes the loco developed an overload, the rear portion I never got to see, and yes you are correct this portion did call at Haymarket twice....ps I did get to Waverley before those sprinters did. they will be uploaded....best wishes...Mark

These sets on many of the “Table 50/51 splitters” were usually Scottish-based anyway, being on circuits out of Polmadie. This 1S85 and balancing 1V59 normally seemed the ones most likely to produce ScotRail Mk2s from memory - if a TSO had to be taken out at Aberdeen, Clayhills depot could field a spare that was nominally part of the Scottish push-pull fleet. It would then rotate in diagram until it got back to Clayhills, or Polmadie swapped it out for one of their own allocation.
