Hi Paul, great video. your diagram of a brace pile shows a foot of 50mm, the code has 100mm foot under piles. We have been using holes of 450mm x 450mm x 450mm with pile 350mm into ground. Are our piles strong enough to be used as brace piles? thank you.

Hi Paul, I'm a diy renovator. Can you recommend any books, website or manuals that would help with building a timber framed shed/studio. Thanks Adrian

Hi Tikanga, sorry I'm unable to help as my speciality is decks only. But whatever you do make sure it meets the building code. All the best for your future project.

Hi Paul, great effort, awesome video. Like your website too. Built in NZ for many years, I'm in the States now. But I still use 3604 (things are actually very well labeled and explained in NZ). I come to you today with a technical question you might be able to shed some light on. I would like to brace quite strongly a system of piles I'm designing. Would like to brace every pile in my design, bracing from the bottom of one pile to the top of the next, and repeating all around the perimeter of my pile system. I'm wondering about Figure 6.6 in NZ 3604 ("Braced pile system - Brace connected to pile") there is a note in that figure that states "2nd brace permitted if only one brace attached to bottom of pile". Do you think you could explain to me what is the meaning of this note? Thank you very much in advance for your help Paul! Alex.

Hey Alex, thanks so much for the feedback. What is meant here, is you can only have one brace at the bottom of a pile, it puts too much load on the footing. Hope this all makes sense. If you are building a deck in the States, please be mindful of local building codes.

Pt 9 Min Hgt of Pile: Can you point me to the relevant 3604 clause for this please.

Try NZS 6.8.2, there's also a diagram on figure 6.6

Hey, you didn't mention what treatment and grade the brace needs to be, are they 100x75 MG8 Is this correct ? or can you use any 100x75
@robodeckdesigner Жыл бұрын
Hey Dave, sorry this wasn't covered in the video. In NZS3604 under section 2.3.2 b) there's a section there on the correct grade, this must be for wet timber. I would have chosen SG8 (sorry not MG8). Also please be aware of the length of your bracing, depending on your length this may have to be 100x100 rather than 100x75.
