There's a LOT more to brachiopods in respect to their ancient morphologies and the very weird steps in their embryonic development

In my neighborhood, the Allegheny Highlands, Brachiopods are the only fossils I've ever seen. The are in a sedimentary matrix with no visible signs of any fossils above or below them.

In many areas, brachiopods are so abundant that their fossils are clearly visible composing huge portions of the limestone itself. This is also often the case with two other types of fossils, crinoids and bryozoans.

Nothing I like better than some steamed clams. ... ... What, nobody here is a clam, right? Uhh, gee... I don't know. Are you a clam, Gordon? Gee, I don't know, Jeremy, are you? I- I had no idea. I'm sorry. I... Hey, Brian. We're both brachiopods. You're in. (Brachiopods... Are not clams!)

It's a very good thing that these critters aren't very good tasting. That's probably why they're still hanging on after over half a billion years!
