Next will be a waterfall image I took yesterday at Limekiln State Park. Same process as this video. Tell Thor he's a smart man. 🐼👍✌️

Fantastic shots Greg, nice tips on bracketing and the final image is very very good. I pretty much do my bracketing in LR as you did using the HDR Merge, glad you mentioned about doing final edits so you do not get the overly baked photos, IMHO HDR is still a good process as long as one keep it real and natural and not much or seldom the neon unnatural pop out that so many were doing a few years ago (times for such yes, but for rarely). The opening video of the sunset was truly amazing, the workshop was very fortunate and lucky to have such amazing clouds and light then, if it was me might have burned through the Mem Cards taking so many pictures of that alone. Thanks for sharing and glad you had fun and got some amazing shots and new adventurous memories to go with them.

Hey Greg, I have to say that's a great result you got there! As to your question about workflow: Most of the time I blend in Photoshop using Luminosity Masks or I do a combination. For such a water shots for example, merge in LR might work good for most of the frame but it might also do some blending on the water, which I might not need or which might the water look too flat. Here I would then bring the merged photo and the photo I took for the water into Photoshop and manually paint in the water. This also helps with seascapes and basically all the areas where LR messes up.
@timphillips38735 жыл бұрын
I always encounter the same problem when an ocean sunset bracket around where I live and photograph a lot. Lightroom HDR doesn't do well with moving subjects and the deghosting can be very hit or miss (usually miss). Your combination LR + PS method is exactly the solution and is relatively simple.

Absolutely killer sunset timelapse! Besides the crazy lenticulars, seeing those white clouds tumble over the top of the peak made it something else. One thing that I didn't understand is why you switched to manual bracketing instead of the camera's automatic bracketing. You implied there was an advantage, but I guess I didn't understand what the advantage was. Keep up the good work, and good look with the fingers.

Great video. I do more manual bracketing now than using the auto bracketing when I think it is going to be a great shot. I just use move the exposure compensation knob and look at the histogram to make sure I have a good shot for the highlights and a good shot for the shadows. The downside to doing this manually is if the light is changing rapidly you can miss the light.

Great image capture & LR tutorial. Knowing how to get a good final image from using different editing techniques is good. I now use Layers in PSCC, slower but a good challenge. Like your new bracketing technique, my Canon 5DSR can bracket up to 7 exposures, but doing it manually is a great creative control idea. PS, how is the finger joint recovers well. as a retired Nursing educator it is probably a good to get it reviewed by an Orthopaedic/hand surgeon after the splinting is removed.

I do have a question concerning yourself and Thomas using ISO 100. Is that as low as your camera goes or is that the best ISO to use in landscape? I appreciate this video and will be giving this technique a try.
@gregorsnell5 жыл бұрын
Hi John, good question. Our cameras lowest actuall ISO is 100, however Canon DSLRs and now Mirrorless also go to ISO 50, but it is a digitized setting. Best to stick with ISO 100 and then balance your exposure.

Thor, what’s the advantage of doing the brackets the way that Greg did versus the bracketing that the camera does by itself?
@ThorarinnJonsson5 жыл бұрын
@@davidv6803 by setting lets say either 3 or 5 brackets on the camera all you are doing is telling the camera how many images you want it to take and what the increments should be between each frame, how ever that might not be enough in many cases, so by using the methood of shooting manual brackets and expose for the shadows and bracked until you cover the highlights using the histogram will make sure you are covering all the dynamic range for that scenery.
@andychattaway56205 жыл бұрын
Great video Gregg - so glad the dynamic intro to your vlogs is not an anti-climax and the content is always awesome. Loved your bracketed shot and the processing you did. In PS there is an option to process HDR bracketed images in 32bit for awesome quality. But after using that method I actually prefer the LR method and result you got here. LR keeps getting better and it's good to keep images as DNG files and export them as Tiffs when needed. ✌️😱

I feel embarrassed to not know until now that LR actually has a way to merge bracketted shots! I wish I had seen this video a couple weeks ago when I went out to photograph something (a dilapidated boat on the side of a random hill). Wanted to shoot it with the sun setting behind it. Properly exposing the boat meant a blown out sky. A properly exposed sky meant a dark boat. Settled on using a flash and it came out fine I guess but after watching this video, I think I would have gotten a MUCH better result if I knew how to bracket. Lol Lesson learned!
@TheKrafty06645 жыл бұрын
I’m new to the whole idea of bracketing. Why would you do it in the situation you were in? What was it that you couldn’t get out of taking one single image that bracketing was able to?
@gregorsnell5 жыл бұрын
Susan, great question. That's right there was too much difference between the shadows and highlights, so I took an image properly exposing both, then five more in between to blend the perfect light balance in post processing.

Hi, could I ask a question. Is shooting hdr (raw) on camera on site a lazy way of doing it as it merges it for you automatically then edit after on LR or is it just the same as doing the merge on photoshop? Or does doing it in lightroom and photoshop give you more control on editing and lighting. Sorry for such a long question lol I've just always wondered this. Thanks
@gregorsnell5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jenn, sorry for the late reply. I think it's essentially the same, just how you prefer to merge is up to you. Honestly I don't often merge HDR in Photoshop but I consulted with people who do and they agreed it's a very similar process. Just takes time and practice.

Great shot! That was the most important thing of my reaction, but... I am wondering why: - you didn't use the automatic bracketing with 7 shots, so you always have image data in the darks and lights, and be done within 1 second. I usually set the exposure to -2/3 EV, which brings the histogram at exactly 50% average, and take 7 shots from there in both directions with between 1 and 2 EV separation, depending on the level of contrast. - you chose f11, which will cause slight blurring due to DLA. With such a wide-angle f5.6 or f8.0 should give ample sharpness, whilst the lens also performs better in that range. - you don't use a tool like Aurora HDR, which does a much better job and gives you far more control than what's available in LR, Photomatix or even Photoshop (unless investing a lot of extra time in the latter). I have ditched LR + Photomatix for HDR merging, but do post-processing in LR. - you don't use Lightroom in full-screen mode and get rid of bars you don't use, so you see more on the small laptop screen. OK, a minor tip. - you don't use manual chromatic aberration removal on top of the automatic one. Sometimes the automatic setting doesn't get rid of all fringes.

I think that it works better in Lightroom. You can also do it in Photoshop without using masks, I think using photo merge ( haven't got it in front of me so don't remember ) I correct the lens and chromatic aberration on the batch in camera raw before I merge and edit in Lr. I know masks are better but such a pain. Cheers E.

The photos are awesome, and the results of the editing are great, but I am not impressed with the structure of the video. Ideally, you want to begin the video by stating the objective of the video, what the difference is between a single shot and a bracketed image, the disadvantage of bracketing (e.g. the different criteria and examples of algorithms used to compress high dynamic ranges into a more linear interpretation), and the artistry of using judgment to make the images look less fake. Then you end the video with a summary of what you covered. In sum, you have good content, but it is kind of disorganized. I see room for improvement for future videos.
