I love Peter Bernstein's silences. He gives the notes time and space to resonate properly. Too many guitarists throw themselves into the instrument and overwhelm you with a flood notes. Bernstein has a completely different approach, and I much prefer it.
@falsenotefest2 жыл бұрын
Yes he is never as good as the moments when he is not playing ah ah
@jeanounou Жыл бұрын
I noticed as much myself! He plays so simple; a note here, a note there, a phrase over there, a little repetition... but you can see it is coming from deep inside. Amazing player.

Brad Mehldau is fantastic at "not playing"! Watch him closely and you see how he hears the notes without moving his fingers. His statements are 40 % of the melodies he could be playing. No noodling. Same for Peter Bernstein. Uniquely conceived.

i agree 100% i will also state that the same goes for Larry and Jeff (both are in total control here)

I lived on 106th and Riverside for 10+ years so Augie’s and later Smoke was my neighborhood jazz spot, and where I heard Peter Bernstein. I miss those days! Brushing with greatness is definitely a regular occurrence in NYC if you make the effort to get out there.

Nobody plays a melody on guitar better than Peter Bernstein! Before you get all excited, please note, I said "nobody is better", not "he is the best" - there's a subtle, but important difference. Anyhow, look at the focus he puts into every note. Short phrases that work together into larger statements. He delights and surprises the listener.
@tcj2264 жыл бұрын
I admit I was unfamiliar with Peter Bernstein until now but you're spot-on with "nobody is better." He plays what's right for the music. Definitely a fantastic new find for me, will be exploring his stuff soon.

@Mr. Neuman Thanks. I admit I just now looked up sycophantic. Good word! I'm an engineer. We rarely go over two syllables. :). I'm definitely going to use it as it is perfect for situations like this. Thanks for the lesson.

This guitarist needs to practice a lot stuff like Giant Steps for the beginning. This man is completely lost in Mehldau's harmonical contexte (I talk about the first song, let's see "la suite")
@andrejkumarov4 жыл бұрын
No, he doesn't put any focus into every single note, it's just crispation and constipation. No liberation no exaltation, neither any dynamics, nothing is build up - that's wank-guitar with no release !! Horrible stupid notes having a horribly lovely sound - a summit of paradox !

It’s called hard work, practice, more practice and passion for the craft. Throw in a tinge of creative genius and the “other-worldly” sensation that you experience only appears to come from an ethereal realm. It’s very much grounded here on earth.

Pat metheny once quoted guitar and piano is a difficult jazz form.his time with Brad's trio was rather experimental. This is an example of wonderful playing ,I love it

Yeah, may be Metheny did, but Scofield did not. However, when I listen to this band, Metheny might be right !

Peter is quiet when Brad plays, and he don't use chords very much here. I heard Sco say that with another melodic instrument like piano you must be careful not to interfer. Sco plays a lot with chords, Pat does to, and with Brad it is quite impossible I think. And Brad has lot of difficulties not to solo while playing.
