Popular poker vlogger Brad Owen finds himself firing a 3 barrel bluff in this exciting poker hand from the Lodge Card Club. Will he get it through?
Jonathan discusses the merit of using certain poker hands to use as bluffs. Generally these are hands that have the opportunity to improve on future streets. He also talks about how you should be more cautious to raise with low valued draws when playing in extremely deep stacked cash games. If you end up getting a lot of action you are often going to be up against better draws that have you crushed. Jonathan would have preferred a slightly smaller turn bet size from Brad to set up for a larger river shove.
Brad Owen is a WPT ambassador and co-owner of The Lodge Card Club in Texas, he is a very successful KZbin poker vlogger for a few years having over 665,000 subscribers. Primarily a cash game player Brad has started playing more tournaments since the start of 2022, earning around $250,000 in cashes whilst his lifetime total live tournament winnings is only $298,000. His biggest cash of $99,000 came in December 2022 at the Wynn, Las Vegas in the $10,400 WPT Championship.
Ez is an American amateur poker player who plays at The Lodge occasionally but is willing to play all stakes from $2/$5 up to $200/$400 on the live poker stream.
They are playing the ‘nit game’ here (shown by the red buttons in front of the players still remaining in the game). It has the same rules as the well-known stand-up game where the last player to lose their nit button has to pay a fee to each player at the table. Brad, Big Tony and Ez still have their nit buttons in front of them in this poker hand.
This poker hand took place during a Lodge Live stream in Austin, Texas. Big Tony in under-the-gun +1 kicks off the action with a raise to $600 holding Q9cc. Brad Owen with AQo decides to 3bet to $3,000. EZ decides to cold call from the cutoff with 86dd and Big Tony decides to defend his initial raise. With $6,450 in the pot the flop brings Jd 6h 2d and Big Tony checks. Brad continues his aggression with a bet of $2,500 and Ez calls with his pair and flush draw. With the pot at $11,450 the turn reveals the Kc. Brad continues bluffing on a card that is great for his range by firing $8,000. EZ makes the easy call. The river bricks out for Ez’s flush draw as it comes the 7s. Brad fires the third barrel and moves all-in for $18,075. Ez ultimately decides to fold what is now only 3rd pair and Brad picks up the $27,450 with just ace high!

Mariano. He's good and he explains. Nothing special about this 3 barrel for me. Quite typical. I do disagree on flatting the button. Even against an overpair we have enough equity. The problem is there are 7-9 cards that can come OTT that make 86s miserable and allow a triple barrel. By the river thats around 30% of the time. Raising the flop makes you indifferent to the preflop raiser and forces them to fold their equity with a hand like AQ. JJ is rare here, and Owen has a wider 3b range than recs. Also the person in position is raising in a 3b pot. He raises enough he could get better draws to fold. I know new solver strategy says to call small FDs and raise nutted ones but in some instances against rec I disagree with the findings. A rec over folds, under bluffs way too much for someone like me to get owned by a higher FD. It just doesn't happen.

Depends on who I'm playing whether or not I would show. I like to show tight folds more and see who takes notice and then get a little stickier with them if they seem capable of bluffing.

Showing bluffs is good if it helps your image at the table. If river bets are not getting paid because image is too tight? show it. Will it put a big stack on tilt? show it.

I would only show to the trash-talker and then plan on never bluffing in the rest of that session. That way, when you have the nuts, you'll get called for a huge pot from the wannabe hero!

Yeah, I show it. I like to see the look on their face and reaction. It makes me feel gloaty and releases the inner pranksta. Kinda like a gotcha plus it's kinda funny. Seriously, I got to stop as everyone around me has become a calling station. Although, sometimes it's a good thing.

It never fails. When I try a bluff like this in the 1/2 and 1/3 games I play in I always get called by that one guy holding a 6. Its annoying at any level of stakes.

I very rarely show the bluff... When I do it has nothing to do with how *I* feel. Had a great game just last night where I showed the marvelous whale at the table that I had bluffed him early while he was running hot, then went on to stack him with the nuts for 200bbs twice over the next couple of hours. *That* made me feel good - lol In general I think I should probably show my bluffs more than I do to the regs, because one way or another I have them pretty convinced that whenever I jam they can safely fold. Of course that mindset is useful too, but I'd like them to be a bit more confused. The sound of H: "All in", V: "Call!", H: "I've got the nuts" is sweet sweet music to my ears.

The only thing I don't like here is how quickly Brad bets the river. It looks bluffy. Not sure it matters though, because EZ's body language was screaming pain on the turn.

Showing bluffs is a part of the game. You use it to shape your table image or if someone is just being a jerk at the table and you want to poke them. You don't show it all the time, but sometimes showing it can help you get paid big later.......especially if you can get into a similar situation with the same player and play it the same when you have the goods......imo

@thomasanthony7652 to answer ur question me personally I don't think stakes should change ur ranges much at all u need to find stakes that are comfortable for you and play normal ranges that are advertised and tweak it a bit to fit your style of play. Stakes should have nothing to do w it stakes are just how much is your bankroll and h I w much do u feel comfortable playing for a if it goes bad what can you afford to loose. The millionares playing 500/1000 are plating the same ranges as the guy playing 1/2 they just have the bankroll for it. Hopes this helps

No, I don't show my bluffs. That's free information. The next time they feel like I'm bluffing, and I've got the nuts (ideally), they lost a good portion of their stack. The key for me has been betting the nuts and the bluffs, flop to river, the same way. Keep 'em guessing. When the story adds up, it pays off. If you put them on a flush draw, and you're right, and they miss, that's a great opportunity.

I show my bluffs to my friends in home games. It's always a casual enough environment with no tilters. Those games are against soft opponents too so showing doesn't matter.

Only time I would ever show cards is if I’m gonna completely switch gears and I want them to think I’ve been doing and am gonna keep doing the opposite. Get to a nice deep stacked table and now it’s time to eat and make sure you get called when you have it next time.

My table image as a big river bet meaning I have the nuts, is too valuable to me, to ever show a bluff. It took me a long time to restrain myself from showing nutted hands, but I'm still way more likely to show that, than a bluff. Sort of a booster shot to anyone wondering if I might make a bet looking like value, to make them think the answer is no. Technically, I am an underbluffer compared to GTO or extremely strong players. But less of an underbluffer than opponents think, so their amount of undercalling to "exploit" my underbluffing more than makes up for it. I'm talking about the river, because most opponents know that my big flop draws are bet like my monsters. Obviously the river underbluffing image applies when at a table where people have a long history with me. Against strangers, I still pay careful attention to my table image, but recognize that things like my VPIP may be very different from usual just due to getting good cards or not, versus having a table image more set in stone regardless of what has happened in that particular session. Occasionally playing a very different style than your usual one, to simulate getting hit by the deck, can work against your usual opponents. Knowing how often to print money that way, is key. If you overdo it, you no longer have an image they're sure of, and they stop making incorrect assumptions.
