www.alaskabears... Several coastal grizzlies eye a giant bull moose in full rut while looking for salmon. Katmai Coast, Alaska. Seen on bear viewing expedition: details visit
www.nathab.com/...
images and film by Naturalist Guide Brad Josephs
Brown bears, or coastal grizzlies, converge on streams during summer to feed on spawning salmon in Coastal Alaska. September is moose mating season, and bull moose grow huge antlers, and have elevated testosterone levels. Bull moose in rut are fearless as they search out female mates. Sometimes the shortest distance to a female moose is close to the bears, but bears rarely try to kill giant moose. A bear attacking a moose is risky, and they have plenty of salmon to eat. This moose is an exceptionally large bull, with flattened antlers, a huge spread, and massive bulk. This moose would be a trophy bull, but Hunting is outlawed in Katmai National Park, about 30 miles across the water from Kodiak, Alaska.
all bears in this video are alaska coastal brown bears, which is the smae species as a grizzly, but grow large on salmon and rich vegetation.

That massive bull must have been around for alot of years. His girth is massive and muscular and the size of his antlers tells me he is most likely king in his territory. Absolutely magnificent! I hope that people don't see him as a trophy, rather an amazing creature in nature.

What's more amazing is even adult GRIZZLIES want to keep their distance from that big boy. I spent my formative years on a 90-acre farm in southern Maine, and I can tell you, when asking locals and/or hunters what animal they hope they never encounter (especially during rutting season) in relative close proximity is a male moose. Period. Occasionally some will say a bear, but unlike many bears who are typically skittish of humans, many moose aren't much scared of anything, which makes encountering a large male F-CKING SCARY. Some years ago my sister's mother-in-law and her husband were in one of those large (as in largest-ever model year) Dodge Durango SUVs, and were broadsided by an adult moose up in the White Mountains of NH. Thankfully both occupants escaped with minor injuries, but sadly the moose (and the SUV) didn't make it. SUV was totaled.

I remember the first full grown bull moose I ever saw. It was 1972 and we were coming off Mount McKinley (the name was changed to Denali in 2015) when we came upon the moose knee deep in a pond. We were a good distance away and the moose looked up at us and stared for a long minute. Natural instinct was to freeze. Might have even held my breath. The moose finally turned it's attention back to eating. We had heard stories how they can step over a six foot fence and that they have even derailed trains. I didn't really understand there immense size until actually seeing one. These animals are huge.

My first encounter was on Isle Royale in 1974. We were hiking on the Greenstone Ridge Trail which runs the length of the island and much of it is, not surprisingly, along a ridge. We were at a spot where the ridge was fairly narrow and dropped off of both sides pretty precipitously on either side when we encountered a bull moose coming the other way. We were probably 40-50 feet apart and everyone, including the moose, stopped dead. We decided to retreat a bit to discuss the situation and the moose stood his ground staring at us. We decided the best thing to do was to leave the trail to go to the edge of the ridge, which put some small aspens trees between us, and slowly, and as unthreateningly as possible, try to slip past him. Fortunately this worked. He didn't move the whole time except to turn his head to watch us as we slunk by about 20-25 feet away through the aspens. That is closest I have ever been to a moose so I am not sure if he was a big guy or a runt, but he looked huge to me at the time.

The bears were like "Just act natural, and try not to look it in the eyes, and it hopefully will leave us alone." 😲 You know that bull's well massive, in the way it was almost daring the bears to have a go, and then walked off with it's back to them, with not one glance to check it's six lol. There are a few factors at play here. Yes, the moose is large and most bears would avoid a confrontation if the threat of being hurt is high. Also, this was salmon running season, so all of the bears were full and didn't have a need to hunt. Lastly, this particular bear had cubs, so it would be dangerous for the cubs if their mother picked a fight with a Bull Moose.

theWolfKing3615 ummm dont know where you get that from. I work in the forestand a bear most definatly will attack large moose and kill it. It is just rare and only happens when there is a real lack of food. Otherwise bears will go for the easier kill. I have come across a very very large moose before that was eaten but much of the bones that were left were shattered. The whole eye socket of the skull was shattered.

I am always impressed with the size of these animals. It towers over the grizzly which already towers over a human. If you have never seen one of these up close search for videos on youtube about Canadian hikers stumbling onto a large bull moose crossing their trail. You will see the scale of this thing next to human being and be amazed at its gigantic heft!

Getting to see large wildlife is great. But caution please. Sometimes we get foreign tourists that try to get too close, take selfies etc. I witnessed one Japanese tourist that approached a bull elk on a hill. The elk snorted loudly as if to warn the tourist, but the tourist continued to move closer. Suddenly the bull elk charged this idiot and he was extremely lucky to remain unscathed. These animals are wild, not tame. Bears are everywhere in our mountains and I’ve even seen them while skiing on Christmas Day when they should be hibernating. During the summer, they attack our trash enclosure and I must rebuild it.

Truly a fascinating look at the daily lives in the fall of two gorgeous species of animals. This Mature Bull Moose is looking for Cows to mate with. The Female Brown Bear with two yearling Cubs is more interested in the Salmon run than the Moose. They know full well what each other is capable of. If it was spring and their were Calf Moose around. The Brown Bear may be more inclined to eat Moose meat. As it is she and her Cubs look in great shape going into their winter den in a few months. 💪🏼🙏🏻✨
