He's not really being silly or serious, he's just being Iggy lol and you interpret him how you interpret him. He's inherently eccentric/shocking, quite often with lyrics based around rock and roll lifestyle. He is a punk rock n rolla and he lived it. I tend to just appreciate the vibe of his music more than anything and have always seen him as a proto-Manson.

I would not have started y’all off with “Lust For Life,” (great album nonetheless,) but the added problem here is that it was the biggest song off the Trainspotting soundtrack, and if you don’t know that and have not seen that film this video is probably super confusing-good case for a lyric video, or just have lyrics pulled up, (I would have thought by now Brad would just have lyrics pulled up for every song.) Iggy Pop & The Stooges are the “godfathers” of punk, their debut was released in 1969. This song was released during Pop’s solo career in 1977, BUT this video is from the ‘90s to coincide with the film trainspotting (1996.) Iggy Pop is still producing music today. 2019’s “Free” was his most recent solo album. Listening to this song may also benefit with the context of Pop’s personal history, which was full of heroin, speed, various other drugs, and homelessness brought on by the addiction to drugs. I believe when The Stooges reunited briefly they discussed in interviews how the kind of gear they played wasn’t important because one of the other band members was probably going to steal it to sell for drugs. Also, around the time that album was released Iggy Pop & David Bowie had been good friends and frequent collaborators. Check out Iggy Pop & Grace Jones performing “Nightclubbin’” (also on the Trainspotting soundtrack,) or “China Girl” (a song which he and Bowie co-wrote and both released their own versions of,) songs off the album, The Idiot. If I were to start someone off on an Iggy Pop path, “I Wanna Be Your Dog” of The Stooges’ self-titled debut would be the song, (the version off The Crow: City Of Angels’ soundtrack is my favorite, but I’d still start ya off with the original,) and probably “Search And Destroy” or “Gimme Danger” off Raw Power (1973.)

"Well, that's like hypnotizing chickens" has been my favorite line since I was a little kid. My aunt played this for me around 1980. Iggy and David Bowie wrote this song together while getting off cocaine in Berlin in the 70s. They were broke and had an apartment. This was the Pop/Bowie collaborative years.

This is a song from 1977, this video was made to promote a movie called Trainspotting in the 90s. It makes more sense in proper context. Iggy is one of the godfathers of punk, he made this after his band The Stooges broke up. This was the start of his solo career, he released two albums in 1977 produced by David Bowie. Both are great.

The song is about trying to control addictions. I know the references he makes are based on a book, so those who aren't familiar with the book struggle to understand what it's about. I'm pretty sure he wrote this with David Bowie too. I'd probably classify it as a punk sub-genre, but can definitely hear Bowie's influence (and he's difficult to put into a genre). The movie Trainspotting, about addiction, made this song more popular than it was nearly 20 years earlier when it was initially released. Saw Iggy Pop open for Pearl Jam in 1997 or 1998... he was not happy with the uninterested crowd and cut his set short. Very few people seemed to notice.

The Godfather of Punk was lamenting his teenage son's behavior and his own promise to him. Iggy was pretty wild in his day, but his kid mellowed him out. Iggy incentivised his son's highschool graduation with a promise to take his son on the road with him. Iggy soon found his son to be twice the Wildman he had been and he tells the story in the song. Unfortunately, the song was also used for the drug movie, Trainspotting, so the video has a convoluted message.

Iggy was languishing in a mental facility around 1975 when David Bowie began visiting him. He took him along on the 1976 Station to Station tour and after that, they decided to kick drugs and record together in Europe. The first lp "the Idiot" is named after a book by Fyodor Dostoevsky. The second "Lust for Life" is named after an Irving Stone novel about Vincent van Gogh. The Idiot's cover is based on "The Scream", a painting by ‎Edvard Munch. Iggy and David recorded in chateau d'herouville, imagining themselves to be Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh, 2 artists with a connection to the chateau who often painted the same subject separately and did self portraits of each other. What David really was after was pioneering a new sound, including groundbreaking "treated" and electronic drums (Nightclubbing's beats were sampled by Nine Inch Nails's Trent Reznor on "Closer", without risking his own reputation. What he learned flowed over into the "LOW" sessions. He also discovered that iggy went into the studio with nothing and composed on the spot, a skill that Bowie used quite often going forward.

Iggy Pop is Godfather of American Punk with the Stooges. He is also very famous for being the beginning of gender bender rock coming out of the 70's. He and Alice Cooper made it kool to put on make up and dress in drag to perform. Connected romantically with Lou Reed from Velvet underground and David Bowie as a decades long three way relationship. Iggy has put out great music for years, but it isnt anything you would consider mainstream, thats why its so tasty. Also check out a recent release (Last decade) Post Pop Depression he made with Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age and Matt the drummer from Arctic Monkeys. Rock and punk fusion that will blow your mind. But a must is rewind back to "I want to be your Dog" to hear the birth of American punk.

Brad, you’re too much of a nerd. No matter what the genre or style of music, all you ever do is hyper focus on the lyrics, and complete ignore the musicality of anything you listen to. You ignore whatever emotions the instrumentals may be conveying so that you may solely focus on lyrics. There are times lyrics are very important, and times they’re not. Lex seems like she’s willing to groove with whatever she may be listening to. You quickly snap her out of whatever groove may be feeling, so you can make her put her nerd cap on along with you and attempt to analyze the lyrics. Some songs are about a groove, a feeling, a vibe my man. Learn to appreciate musicianship dude. Or the quality of a singers voice rather than just the words being said.

No, this aint pop rock! It's punk (maybe pop punk for this song). Fast rock music with a little jumpy beat, danceable. I love how punk rock trips Brad and Lex out sometimes 😆 But, this is an old reaction from months ago, see that yall since then have gotten the hang of punk music now. Punks can be silly, wild, pissed off/ f you attitude, sarcastic, hilarious at times. For sure Iggy Pop, he's one of the Godtathers of punk, going back decades. The Stooges, his band was one of the proto-punk bands back in the late '60s. They came out of Detroit, Michigan. MC5, another proto-punk band, came out of Detroit, too. Check them out! They have good songs. If you ever watch the Jim Rome show or listen to his show on sports talk radio. This song is played on there beginning and at the end of the show. 🎸

Iggy is in the realm between Pop and Punk. In the early 80's when punk, new wave, electronic/house & metal was finding bands move in and out of these genres because most weren't stable genres and fluid in what was considered what. Ramones were another like this where they started in punk and slowly moved into Rock, but unlike Iggy, they never ventured into Pop. You had other bands moving in and out of new wave and pop, or punk and new wave, or punk and metal as well. The nonsensical was a common theme in the early 80's in part because that often got bands air time on MTV or VH1. There was songs about fish heads, songs from Frankie telling us all to relax, and don't do it..songs about dead people partying (Oingo Boingo: Dead man's Party), song about Mexican radio and iguanas(Wall of Voodoo)...it was a very antiserious era, even the song about being blinded by Science, was a nonsensical track. But these tracks shouldn't be misconstrued to be in line with comedic stuff like what Weird Al was creating or anything that would be played in the late nights with Dr. Demento or Tony Jams shows were playing. These were just eccentric expressions much like the odd art that was being born in that same time period.

If you are confused about the video, it’s showing scenes from the British cult classic movie Trainspotting, which this song was the soundtrack of. You should definitely watch it, you will need subtitles lol

Iggy’s drugs did drugs. Iggy is brilliant. His interviews were very insightful and introspective. He has moved across many genres. His segment in Bourdain’s was so poignant.

You can't even begin to understand just how frickin insane this man was back in the day he would straight up stab himself and roll around on broken glass on stage during concerts. GG Allen was another one. I don't know who was crazier GG is dead now Iggy's still around. Yeah he did a lot of drugs I believe heroin mostly then got addicted to methadone during one of his many visits to rehab. My brother just got off of methadone after years of taking it for heroin addiction' and went through horribly withdrawals

Iggy Pop is "the" Underground music legend - and started as singer of the late 60ties band "The Stooges" and they made already "Punk music" almost a decade before Punk music as own genre even existed...Check out their song "I wanna be your dog" or "1969"...totally Punk but released in 1969

Just dance to the speeded up Motown beat by a great drummer. And tight band. Great sound, and that Pop - Man in the middle, fine vocals. Lyrics are about " kickin the bad habits", and Iggy managed to do so about 5 years after this recording. That's why he's alive and well. Maybe " Cry For Love" - song& video would be more hypnotizing cup of tea for you?

As others have pointed out, Iggy is the godfather of punk. He blazed trails that had hitherto been unimagined and unimaginable. I REALLY, REALLY recommend looking at this clip of him in concert back in the day to give you a sense of what he offered WAY back in the 70s: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iovXmWd5g8Z4eKM for a bit of fun, have a go at counting how many times he blinks!
