I swear, one day you'll find a way to build an ion SSTO
@iain37135 жыл бұрын
Maybe an electric only ssto with his 1000m/s prop plane, probably not possible idk
@dihydrogenmonoxide28785 жыл бұрын
@@iain3713 Absolutely not possible, in order to get to orbit you need to have at least SOME thrust outside of the atmosphere, props will not do ANYTHING once he's in space, so he would be unable to do the final maneuver to LKO. that being said, an orbit using props is possible, it would simply not be an SSTO, once he's out of the atmosphere, he can wait until he hits his Apoapsis, rotate the craft in order to create centrifugal force, and decouple (Therefore making the craft not an SSTO) to slingshot the desired part of the craft into LKO, however, in order to return back to the surface, he would need to bring more then one thing to decouple, as each of these slingshots require a decouple. he would essentially need to bring another weighted object up with him for every maneuver he planned on making while outside the atmosphere. this is also assuming KSP's physics allows a prop to have enough power to reach a suborbital trajectory. i've made my fair share of props. and they don't put out much power once you exit the lower atmosphere, so it would probably be even harder to get one into a suborbital trajectory then getting this thing to Duna was. that being said, he's a genius, and could probably pull something crazy off and make it work. I would love to see if, and if he sees this comment, I would love to know what he thinks, or even see a video on it.
@dihydrogenmonoxide28785 жыл бұрын
@@blemmyes Well, I'm not going to say he couldn't, but no matter how good you.are, I don't think it's possible to make a prop plane that can get that far out of the atmosphere without any other form of movement. I will admit I haven't crunched the numbers, nor would I be able too (mathz be hard) but it just doesn't seem very likely, then again neither did an orbit using only ion engines. That being said, if he managed to exit the atmosphere with enough speed, and traveling in the right direction, while the Mun was in the right spot... Hypotheticaly, yes, a gravity assist could be used to get into a stable orbit without any sort of burn after leaving the atmosphere. The biggest problem I see with this whole thing, is although props can be rather powerful, unlike most engines, they lose a LOT of power as the craft gains speed, and at high enough speeds they can often clip through your ship, or even summon the Kracken. **shudders** If you don't know what a prop in KSP actually is, it's not an actual engine. To make a prop, you essentially build a ship that's trapped inside a Propeller housing on your main craft, and use reaction wheels to spin that ship really fast, so the propeller isn't actually connected to your main ship. That makes it prone to fail in many conditions. High speed, hard turns, and just general bad luck will easily wreck most props. Even if the math works out for a prop plane he makes, it would be a miracle if he managed to reach sub-orbital velocities without any clipping or issues.

I have a suggestion for you involving one of three of my planet pack mods. Now I know you don't usually play with planet packs, but hear me out: 1) Alternis Super-Tylo. In the Alternis Kerbol Rekerjiggered mod, the planet Tylo has some interesting and poorly explored aeronautical properties. 4 gees of gravity, 0.7 atmospheres of pressure, but all crushed down so low that the atmosphere is only usable in the lowlands (indicated on the biome map). Ever since NovaSilisko created the original AKR, the prospect of a super-tylo flags, footprints, and return mission has eluded all but the badass but not well-known Metaphor05--and that was back before re-entry heating. The first person to land on Tylo and Return with Re-entry heating will get three gold stars! You also start orbiting a warmer Jool where Tylo used to orbit, which is also interesting. 1b) There's also two comets in orbits completely unlike anything in stock KSP that you might be interested in. 1c) I've always wondered if you could do a jet-engine-only transfer from Kerbin to Laythe and vice versa with Alternis. At any rate, a Kerbin-Laythe Spaceplane would be interesting here. forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/120246-17-alternis-kerbol-rekerjiggered-v240-april-10th-2019/ 2) Whirligig World. Whirligig World is a mod that makes you start on the planet Mesbin, a rapidly rotating super-kerbin with a mass of 71 kerbins, and 13 gees of gravity at the poles. But with a 28 minute rotation period, equatorial gravity of this oblate object is reduced to 1.286 G. The result is that getting to orbit is fairly easy, landing is similar to Tylo landing, and escaping Mesbin without ISRU on one or many of its moons is very difficult. It's also a surprisingly fun career game. There's plenty of daring and interesting locations to visit in the system, but the complication of coming back home to Mesbin when you have to slow down with no atmosphere makes any standalone mission daring--even a simple Mun (Graymun) Mission. (There's also a more kerbinlike experience with the Kerbmun Homeworld patch, but I recommend WW specifically for the difficulties presented by the Mesbin homeworld.) forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/166563-170-whirligig-world-planetary-system-an-absurd-homeworld-in-an-alien-solar-system-091-482019/& 3) Seven worlds of SLIPPIST-1. This is a fairly realistic, stock-scale analogue of the TRAPPIST-1 solar system. You can either start the game from Kerbin, in which case the system will be far away at 6.4e13 meters, or you can start the game from SLIPPIST-1e "Echo," the most Kerbinlike of the planets. It would be interesting to see you try to accomplish an interstellar mission with stock parts, as 6.4e13 m is not an entirely unreasonable distance for a kerbal starship to travel. But even without, the planets Bravo and Charlie are somewhat extremely daunting destinations to visit, and a grand tour of (most of) these seven worlds would be fascinating to watch. The planets are all in a resonance chain, which could result in some interesting gravity assists. forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/157020-17-seven-worlds-around-slippist-1-v072-update-march-12th-2019/

This dude says he is going to orbit Kerbin with limited resources, then proceeds to land on duna with said resources, then he comes back to Kerbin with said resources AND ABSOLUTELY STYLES ON THE SCIENTISTS WITH A PARACHUTE jesus christ

Landing idea: fly through the opening at the top of the VAB and then land on the control tower

When you're parachuting back down, have a plane come flying in from the runway, and pick Bill up midflight while parachuting.

Have you tried Wind Tunnel mod? It graphs performance of atmospheric vehicles, however i don't think it would handle such complex aircraft.

Looking forward to more and more frequent vids! 2000 ion engines and 1600 batteries.. what a madlad lmao I was like "Nice he hit orbit" then he started to talk about Duna and Eve and I was like "Wait what" and when he came back I remembered that I was really happy that I hit Eve orbit earlier today.. lol

I would love to see your planning! Like the math behind it, how you do the maneuver nodes, maybe even when you build your spacecrafts! I think it would be really cool and your audience could learn alot as well.

You mentioned in the previous video that you didn't want to do Moho with just the boring old techniques. How about landing inside the Mohole with the lightest craft possible - the hole caused by a glitch in the terrain generation at north pole of Moho? You might get some inspiration from this reddit thread: www.reddit.com/r/KerbalSpaceProgram/comments/81yucq/weekly_challenge_week_158_mohole_adventures/ The safest way appears to be using some wheels to sort of hang from the sides as the very bottom is prone to kraken attacks.
