With the NRG Jay, the other 3 figures of that line were relatively easy to find, but for some reason Jay was spread thin, making collectors scavage stores for him. I don't blame them, this was a fairly big part of the show. I remember rarely seeing him in stores

Yes there was a production shortage. Luckily for me i obtained 2 of them back then, but the condition is a bit tough.

NRG Jay had a production time of one month I believe reading somewhere so the supply was very low making him uncommon in stores.

The Mimban stormtrooper is also interesting as it has a unique helmet mold. Its very similar to the then used helmets, but with an added visor. This piece was only used in the one set

Its interesting that the Jay NRG figure was considered Hard to find, As I have heard it had a weird production run, but as someone who was into Ninjago when it released I remember seeing him everywhere In fact I brought 2 of them at the time. Zane Nrg was the hardest to find from my memory as he was released much later compared to the other 3 NRG spinner packs

Seems like COVID and supply shortages have done that to a lot of sets/themes the last couple years. I wonder what will shoot up in the future due to the shortages now.

@@bradsbrickpost the Marvel 2021 Advent Callender is a good example. The Thor minifig is technically exclusive, but the only thing that sets him apart is an added scarf that isn't even exclusive. With many of these figures from big lines such as Marvel, DC, and Ninjago, so many minifigs come with added or subtracted elements that are easy to come by, and you can add your own pieces to make them complete. I remember doing that when I was a kid

I'm astonished when I browsed a Bricklink store and they were selling a Deadpool in new condition for $50. Then I found out the cheapest you could get him was $25, which was more than what I got the entire set for as a kid.

What's sad is the fact that when I was in grade 4 or 5 me and my old friends used to trade minfigs for stuff we had like, accessories or other minifigs or brickarms even, and I can remember one time I traded some brickarms for a lego superboy and I still have his head but lost the torso and pants sadly which is so disappointing knowing that I could've had an easy $50 minifig in my collection

The nrg figures definitely keep up with their hype. Even then and now, I could see them being sold quite frequently, and ironically ended up as sth almost known and have by many but at the same time think they're rare because some kiddos watching their ceirtain favorite youtuber said so. They're still authentically cool and stand out nonetheless.

I can explain the NRG Jay figure. There was something screwy with his distribution, making Jay incredibly hard to find at retail. But kids and collectors had the other 3 Ninja readily available (this was back before Lloyd was the Green Ninja), so they are trying to complete the set. Finding Jay to do so was next to impossible.

I don't own any of these figures but my most expensive figure in my collection currently is the Velma figure from the 2015 lego scooby doo mystery mansion set which I got brand new in 2019 for $200 when the Velma figure was going for $65 new. Only reason I opened the set was because the time of getting the set it was 2 weeks before the 50th anniversary of scooby doo so that is how I celebrated the 50th anniversary was by building the largest set from the theme and getting the full scooby gang in lego. Since before I only had the mystery machine set for lego scooby doo.

I remember how NRG Jay sets started to become rare over here around march 2013. I snagged them up whenever I found one and sold it for twice the amount. Maybe others did that too? As for how it started, maybe it becane rare because: -1 At the time many considered the spinners as poor value for money, especially compared to the sets. -2 He came out in the summer 2012 wave alongside many coveted sets for any fan of the TV show. -3 A few months later Lloyd ZX would release, so many focussed more on that one instead. By that time the previous wave was already slowing its production. Not a large window! But most didn't sell well and were still around well into 2013. -4 graphically it's not the best at selling that the figure consists of pure energy compared to say NRG Cole and Kai. The bright blue probably didn't make him the 'coolest' and thus the most popular. -5 Being part of a set of 4, these factors probably made people go for him last whilst he was released first in a surprisingly limited production run. Hence scarcity.

That's really interesting! All of those points would definitely add up to his price jumping up later on. I've always found it interesting how some sets can fall through the cracks during a short production run (sometimes without anyone even noticing) and then later skyrocket up in value. I wonder what sets on the market right now, or that have just recently retired, will shoot up. I really wonder what the Looney Tunes figures are going to do in the future; those didn't seem to have a long run either.

I remember doing some MOCs and paying like 10 bucks for a figure with dual molded white/peach arms (t-shirt arms), so I can absolutely see those two figures mentioned, Finn, and uh Superboy going for a lot if they're exclusive or rare arms. Blue/peach and black/peach. Lego could do a lot more short-sleeves, and it'd make me happy!

That's awesome! I bought the hive crawler at Toys r Us when all of those sets were going on super clearance and being wiped out as the theme ended. That's the only one I ever picked up, but the lime pieces in it have been really good for building mocs over the years, and like I said, I love the alien Minifigures that came in. I'm glad I was able to pick up that one set before the theme completely retired.

@@bradsbrickpost Well, I am into everything and nothing, I like certain sets rather than certain themes. But I am generally more into Ideas, 3in1, display sets, Mocs etc than licensed themes. My fav thing of all are rebrickable Mocs, meaning Mocs made from one or more of the same set only. That concept, like the 3in1 sets, really speaks to me, besides being practical lol well, cheers from Denmark :)

I don't really think the early Maersk sets were "relatively obtainable to large populations of people". They were promotional release and seem to have been pretty hard to find without any company connections.

​@@bradsbrickpost It seems to largely be the same fans interested in castles, and the new set includes the modern "motorcycle helmet". The old helmet in light gray only appeared in a few early Castle sets, and it was the first iteration that was very frail and prone to breaking; so the age, rarity and fragility lends itself to high after-market prices. They're also coveted by both castlemasons and space explorers, since Lego released a Light Gray space torso in the CMF series a few years back, and if you're not above mixing the gray nuances, you could make a Classic Space gray minifig.

I have 4 Davy Jones minifigs, Mimban Solo, Finn from Adventure Time, space Batman, and super boy - but I feel like an idiot cause I have NRG Cole Zane and Kai but no Jay :(
