Potty training your puppy. Get a stainless steel pan made, about 3 -4 feet square. Pick up some sod from a lawn/garden place, ( or from your neighbor's yard when they're sleeping). Put some dirt, and then fill the pan with sod as if you were laying a lawn. Now start re-training the dog by taking her there on leash, and keeping her there for a couple minutes. If she doesn't go, it's of little value to keep her there. Keep doing it until she gets the hint, and will automatically go there on her own. When you get to your boat, get some lawn turf, cut it to fit, with maybe something under to give it depth, and she will recognize it and go there. If you were to put some sort of drain off it, you can just hose it over the side, or collect it in the toilet as your own waste. I have had labs all my life, and I have an area out in one corner of the yard with a drain hooked into my sewer system. There is a quick connect with a hose, and I can just hose it into the sewer in a minute or two. (my area is concrete, not a pan, and the older dogs have taught the young one.

What I did with my dog to potty train him was to get one of those fake grass pee pads. You'll have to find a spot that's easy for the fur baby to reach from below to become comfortable with it. Every time my guy woke up from a long nap, I told him "Let's go potty and took him straight to the pee pad, telling him to "get busy" once he did his business, praise, and a treat. A few minutes after eating, same thing. If he had been laying down for a watching what was going on, "let's go potty" and out to the pee pad. Out to the pee pad right before bedtime and right when he woke up from sleeping at night, always telling him, "let's go potty" and "get busy" when he was out at the pad. Now this won't be something that gets them potty trained overnight, but a few days of being consistent will get him trained. The toughest part might be finding the ideal spot on your boat for the fake grass pee pad as it will probably need to be protected from stormy weather but also easily sprayed down with the water going overboard. Good luck with your fur baby.

We have so much in common. I loved the Delos story. I love the straight sailing ones too. Just the feel of the water that I think only people that have felt that movement can fully “feel”. My dad had a CT 54 for 44 years and sold it ten years ago….. we did many Sea of Cortez sails and had a mooring in the isthmus for 55 years. Before the CT, we had an Angleman ketch…. A sea witch….. two Hawaiian transpacs and more island hopping and Mexico trips. To say that I miss it? Well….. you can imagine. Aside from all that I raised two Morgan geldings…. Each lived to age 23. Plus …. Lots of dogs….. kitties…… and found the love of my life as well. I relate to you two. I’m envious and totally enthralled with your videos…. Your vision…… so thank you. Really…… thank you.

GROOVY EPISODE. I thought you were nice and fun people before watching this video, but now I see that you are both super caring people, concerned about others lives, perhaps at times even more than you own. Special loving people can't be made, they are born with the magic that one day finds a way out. Stay safe and stay groovy.

For the potty training, use a square of "astroturf". My dad used that back in the day on his boat to train our dog. Take and install a 3/4 grommet, tie off and drag in the water to clean.

Being a 13-year Stage 4 Cancer survivor ..... I really liked the short segment about bringing survivors out to sail. It is hard to go back out in the World when your body is wrung out from treatment ...... but having a loving place without a big crowd, and fellow travelers on that journey helps you to see what is really important .... to live every day that you get. Keep 'em flyin

Potty training : what worked for my dog (2 years old rottweiller beauceron mix) was to cut a triangle of fake grass placed near the anchor locker and scrubbing some of her pee with a towel and then on the fake grass so she would find her odor. Worked on the first time during a 19hours leg in the med. I walked with her to comfort her and she was on a leash so she had the feeling we were out for peeing time. Be careful about the lines and anything on deck that could absorb the pee as it stinks when dried. We would alway throw one or two buckets of seawater on the deck afer she had peed. A lot of people say we are lucky it worked but it might be worth trying. As for the poop she sometimes misses the fake grass… Fortunately she has good food so it is not too difficult to clean but one time she did an explosive one and it was painful to clean up… We attached strings to the fake grass so that we just have to throw it in the water to let it soak (be careful how you attach it as the waves have a tendency to unfold some knots in the water

Love it! Love it! Love it! So very happy to see the two of you just doing it! Potty ....make a small box , big enough for Sharky to fully stand on, pee pads on the inside (the washable kind, washable diapers work), then cover artificial grass. There is a pee scent you can put of the grass so Sharkey knows that's where to pee. All washable, so no problems with stinky trash building up. Yes, I have know a few live aboard doggie friends that have done cruises. Can't wait to see your continued adventures!♥️💋

If I were taking my dog out on a boat, I think I would have to bring a patch of astroturf and surround it with some potted plants (my pup is a shy pooper and needs his face to be in the bushes every time he goes). I would put it in the bathroom for easy cleanup. I'd probably start training him on it before we left so that he knows that is where he poops. No idea if it would work, but I hope it gives you some good ideas. Good luck!

Good luck with potty training your dog, it took me years to get my dog to do it on the boat. What finally did it was just now taking him ashore. It took him almost two days of holding it before he decided to do it on the boat. He now goes up to the bow to do his business and I rinse it off with sea water once he is done. Mats and astroturf never worked with him.

Love it. The sailing therapy is brilliant. I'm a recreational therapist with considerable experience leading adventure therapy in the first decade of my career. I'm very much impressed with your sailing school providing therapeutic programming. I hope you know you're carrying on a wonderful tradition of utilizing sailing as a therapeutic intervention. Many of the earliest applications of adventure therapy concepts can be traced back to 1941, when Lawrence Holt and Kurt Hahn developed a sailing course called Outward Bound, which has grown into an international network of outdoor education organizations. Researchers in my field have built a massive amount of evidence that such leisure experiences have efficacy in treating PTSD, depression, anxiety, aggression, mood dysregulation, grief, loss, eating disorders, substance use disorders, psychosis, and much much more. I have been involved in several research studies; one found fly fishing reduced symptoms of PTSD. My question: Do you utilize therapists with the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential in your sailing therapy program? Such professionals could strongly validate your program, ensure evidence-based practices, develop metrics to evaluate your desired outcomes, and possibly increase the number of funding sources for program development and how clients pay for services. If you don't, I can help recruit top-notch adventure therapists. Anyway, I love your channel and videos. They bring me joy. Thank you.
@CruisersAcademy2 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael, thanks for your input on this! At this point we aren't partnered with a Therapist but maybe one day in the future. We're exited to grow the program and are even considering starting a non-profit to make it the real deal :)

Oh my Gawd Brady, if youre flying all the way to Palau, please take a 15-30 minute plane ride on Caroline Islands Airline (CIA) to my home Island of Yap, FSM. Been on my heart to suggest to SV DELOS to sail that way when in Pacific Ocean, but been putting it off. You and Blue have to go there. You will fall in love with Yap just as much as you will fall in love with the Island of Palau. Thats a guarantee!😊 Cant wait to see your adventures down this part of the Globe.
