Well the word “avatar” is a Sanskrit word for “different versions of oneself” it’s usually used in religious scriptures to describe the different reincarnation of gods or their different “swarups(versions)” that they take on for example:- Goddess Parvati, she is the wife of lord shiva- she takes on the “swarup/ avatar” of “maa kaali” after this Rakshsa(demon/ monster) wretched havoc in the human world. The swarup is said to be really scary which is quite the opposite of ma parvati herself as she is often depicted to be very calm and full of wisdom. The one thing both the swarup have in common are their protectiveness toward their subjects.

Shiva is a hindu God who is also known as destroyer. Not to be taken in negative way. He destroys in order to prepare the world for new creation.. The story is inspired by that. Even the girl is also inspired by the mother nature who is Shiva'*s wife. In Hindu religion their love story is one of the most celebrated one. She is literally considered half of Shiva. Shiva is nothing without Shakti (isha). So I guess at the core emotional quotient is going to be that relationship but it will be subtle I hope.

The Brahmastra isn't the ultimate being persay, like the Avatar in ATLA. It's more like the ultimate weapon of the gods. Each person wields an Astra but the thing with Shiva is he is different, he doesn't just wield an Astra, he literally is one, the physical manifestation of the god's weapon of fire, the Agni Astra. And there seems to be an organization out there that is dedicated to wielding the god of all weapons (the Brahmastra literally stands for the god of all weapons, or the weapons above all weapons). Also the weapons aren't limited to earth, air, water, fire (those are 4 of the 5 base elements in Hindu mythology though). There is also the nagastra which is a bow that never misses as it shoots out ethereal snakes that will always seek its target, and the nandiastra which gives the wielder the power of a thousand bulls, and many other astras (god weapons). All in all this is a universe centered around the weapons of gods that have landed in humanity's hands, and the duty that these Brahmansh have to protect these weapons from people who want to use it to destroy the world, with Shiva not only being a protector of the weapon, the weapon itself.
