You are right Stevie, it was an idea from Lord of the rings. There is no Astra which has control over all the astras😅 What they are showing resemble more like a Shastra which is hand held, like a sword or a gada. Astras typically are invoked by chanting mantras each time before use channeling into objects which can be thrown. eg: Bow &Arrow. Brahmastra was one of the most powerful Astras used in bow and arrow form. it is said that those mantras have been lost since all those warriors died during Mahabharat times and the knowledge wasn't passed on. I know the movie is fiction and they trying to imply their own rules in their universe. But since many such movies would be introduced to the world, getting the basics of our existing stories in Indian culture would go a long way to make sense of the great epics written thousands of years ago!!:)
