Superb! Perhaps the best orchestra in Spain and a new star conductor.

It is the best orchestra in Spain.

I've been out of circulation for several years, so was delighted to find this performance, as I've always had a great regard for the orchestra. But there appears to have been many changes (and conductor, sadly). If not correctly handled, Brahms' orchestrations can sometimes become a little turgid. Not so here. The string sections appear to be smaller than is often seen (I hope this is no reflection of a permanent reduction). Whatever the reason, and be my observations right or wrong, one thing is definite - this performance displays a model of clarity, contributing to a very rewarding outcome.. I may not particularly like this conductor's wildly whirling, yet clearly Wunderbar style, but this last adjective?, because he gets Wundebar results. Thank you all.

Indeed. Dima did wonders with this orchestra. Perhaps there were many substitutions - it often happens during the holidays.

The change of conductors for Roberto is a most welcome one. As far as the new faces go, we have several new members. We were not allowed to hold auditions for ten years. We’ve filled the vacant timpani position after more than ten years. We’ve also filled tutti celli, principal cello, 1st and second trumpet, two 1st horn positions, bass trombone and a slew of young and talented violinists.

One of the best renditions of Brahms' great masterpiece that I've ever come across, IMHO surpassing Bernstein's interpretation and matching and perhaps in some respects even surpassing Karajan's own excellent version with the Berlin Phil (I find Karajan's conducting sometimes leads to a somewhat "monotone" orchestral sound which misses subtleties in the orchestral colouring). Bravo González-Monjas and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia!

Pretty good. It held together well and I love the acoustics of this hall.

Lots of new faces in the orchestra. Does anyone know what happened to my admired oboist Casey Hill? I haven't seen him on stage for a long time. I do hope he's well and active.
@jlunch5 ай бұрын
My good friend Casey is alive and well. He recently retired and enjoying a quieter life. Most of us musicians suffer tinnitus to a varying degrees. My ears are ringing as I write this but his was much worse. He retired because of it.
@drgustavbakter47355 ай бұрын
@@jlunch Oh! I'm so sorry to hear that. Casey's soloist interventions have always been invariably splendid. I would have expected a little tribute, a note of acknowledgement in the press or something. Maybe I missed it. Please if you are in touch with him, do transmit him my admiration for his career, my gratitude for watching him shine in countless brilliant performances and my best wishes for his retirement. I didn't know anything about this occupational hazard of yours. I hope it does not get more viral and lead to more retirements. Please, take care!

@@drgustavbakter4735 Thank you for your encouraging words regarding our auditory issues. It's definitely an occupational hazard. I do however always feel that if a person has hearing problems, it's because they were actually listening. To listen and to feel heard are two very important aspects in any person's life. Casey played 3 deccades of great concerts here. He was always a fantastic player and a musician I always admired. We are also friends so we go golfing together from time to time, talk about baseball, do the occasional BBQ, etc etc. A tribute would have absolutely been the right thing to do. it's still a possibility to do something like that and that will involve some of us to bring up the topic. Our orchestra is young so we are only now just going through our first batch of people retiring. We haven't yet created a tradition.

Who's playing the 2nd trombone? I think I saw the young lady playing for the Verbier orchestra a few years ago. I beleive is the same. No mention of her when I look at the orchestra roster unless she was invited to assist Jon. Awesome sound!!

Not the orchestra's best recording, not the clearest sound, not the best balances and dynamics. Hasty all along from the first note to the last. A bit of a letdown.
