So, I find myself as an engineering teacher this year haha, and the reason the board took the wall hit is because glass does great under compression but is super brittle so fails in tension. I started to geek out about the lever/fulcrum talk at the beginning and wanted to comment, but then Aaron explained it perfectly by the end. Eesh sorry bout the hand Ricky! I got a nice little baby concussion myself this week trying to get rock fakie down, took a strategic hit to the chin lol.. Landed 4 spine transfers though! Been loving the channel for a year and it's only gotten better! Much love

Yes I understand exactly what he is saying. On a regular skateboard the base of the trucks is directly over the trucks themselves, and the only pivot point is also on the trucks, so the pressure exerted into the board from the trucks is minimal. On the glass board the trucks are offset from the base by a few inches by a metal arm which creates a pivot point at the base of the truck, exerting pressure into the board where the trucks attach to the glass.. Since the metal is harder than the glass and that pressure point is a more concentrated point. The glass will break.

Yes leavers are very powerful mechanical machines and basically if the effort arm (distance between the force and the fulcrum) the fulcrum is just the turning point. So if the effort arm is longer than the load arm then it has a high mechanical advantage and can move heavy stuff easier like a wheel barrow. This is called a second class leaver. A first class is something like a seesaw and third is when the load arm is longer than the effort so harder to move the load. Hope this makes some kinda sense.

Having the trucks offset from the bolts like that creates a greater torque rather than just a direct vertical force when the trucks are directly below as usual. So yes it’s more likely to shatter like that

Ricky meant that when a regular truck is on there, the pressure is going straight up (mostly) from the wheels. When it's on that extended suspension arm, the every time the arm flexes it's like it's pulling on the bolts at an angle. So it's an added stress on the attachment point beyond just sitting above the wheels.

Ricky's 100% correct. The reason the "suspension" risers are supposed to be connected in the middle of the board is because they do act as levers. There for, they are magnifying the amount of force that the board is subjected to by the weight of the rider. By mounting them in the center of the board this effect is minimized. When mounted in the traditional truck position they create extreme amounts of pressure on the center of the board, which is already the weakest point of the board to begin with. I'm quite sure the designers realized this early on, because they purposely built the trucks so that the mounting holes don't match up to the holes drilled into the board. By mounting them in the traditional location they're losing all of the suspension benefits, and greatly increasing the risk of accidentally focusing the board. That being said, it's Braille and they were just going to break it anyway.

The glass is under compression when the trucks are fixed directly to the board, but is placed under tension with the weird sideways trucks, which as Ricky points out work like levers pulling the mounting bolts downwards. Simply put, glass is stronger under compression than under tension.

Machinist/mechanical technician here. the problem is "STRESS RISERS" Don't let the bolts bear directly on the glass, use rubber and plastic insulators so that only soft stuff touches the glass to hold the trucks on, this is why panes of glass are always held in place with rubber seals, sharp things touching glass breaks it.

I’m paused at 1:34 and Ricky is 100% right on the physics stand point the Fulcrum on a lever matters very much but it that lever bends it won’t put as much force until it can’t bend anymore so I predict it breaks when you put quite a bit of stress on the board like a drop

If it's tempered glass, like a car window, there is pressure built into the glass. It's very sturdy until a sharp point causes the pressure in the glass to release. Once it does, it's a catastrophic failure and the whole thing shatters.
