Brain Trust Kid (2004)

An animated music video for artist Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket) commissioned by Aware Records, and executed from boards to final in 4 weeks.

This was my first attempt at a full production mostly in Flash (v4, I believe). All character animation and color was done in Flash; backgrounds in Adobe Illustrator; compositing and FX done in After Effects -- all on a comparatively sluggish computer.
As you can see, the amount of actual animation is very limited. Time needed to be saved, and I chose story over movement. This job showed me how many concentrated hours it took to complete an animated short of any sort, and I did it pretty much for free, as I was trying to convince my music industry client base that animation was an option for them. Worked out ok in the end, I think :)

I remember seeing this when I was about 3 years old. At the time I wasn't used to anything like this so I got freaked out by the song and the video, now I can relate to the song and understand the message that the video is trying to convey. Amazing work!

Wow, that sounds super fast considering all the backgrounds effects etc. It takes me a week and a half of mornings to get 26 secs of crappy animation.The video is pretty trippy too. I can imagine swapping the music out for Incense and Peppermints and having it still make sense. ;D

Ha! Yeah, it was pretty nuts. I was so eager to do this and prove myself at the time, I really didn't even know what I was getting in to. The last week was pretty much no sleep. I wish there was more actual animation, but at least I like the way the story cut together. Glad you dig it man! It taught me a lot. Although I still have the occasional sleepless animation weeks :P
