My parents, despite not playing many video games, understood the importance of saving the game data, because they thought of it as a Microsoft Office Word document, you have to save as much as you can just incase the computer suddenly crashes, freezes, etc. Because if you haven't saved recently, you would have to type everything again due to whatever you typed since you last saved is now gone. It also helped that most of my early games allowed me to save almost anywhere(Pokémon), or would autosave at a certain point (The Super Mario Advanced games, Mario Kart Super Circuit, Yoshi's Island, etc.)

The trick with the slot reel is a bit easier once you see the pattern. For example, let's say you're top icon is a mushroom, you should hit the button as soon as the second row mushroom aligns with it. Then on the third line, hit the button on the icon BEFORE the mushroom. So, if a fire flower is before it, hit the button as if you're aligning the mushroom with that last third of the fire flower, and you should get the third part of the mushroom instead. I don't know if this is because it's spinning to fast at this point or what, but I find this method helping me out quite a bit. From that point on, it's all up to your reflexes. And as for the reasoning behind why world wasn't with the all stars release, "World was already on the virtual console," so were the four other games, but Nintendo still re-released the collection, "Oh, you want Mario World? Well, we could have ported the deluxe version... but that would mean you'd get to keep those eight extra dollars. Sooo.... No."

With all due respect Lewis, I do not believe a lack of knowledge about video game mechanics to be a justification for a parent being called "dumb". You have to look at it from their perspective as well: they see video games as unproductive and a time waster and although this is not a fact and is reserved for a subjective debate, parents just did not uphold them to the same values as some of us had. It is just a matter of different values and although I loved video games as a child, I respect that viewpoint now as an adult who often has to remind his younger cousin that there is a time and place for video games and other more "productive" activities such as a research paper. Peace, Billy

Maybe Johnny has a point, maybe it is because I can't read while in a car, cuz the same thing happens if I check facebook or write an SMS, and come to think of it, not a lot of the games I played as a kid consisted of that much reading. Hmm... does that mean I would still be able to play games in the car as long as they're not too text heavy? xD Oh, and my mom was always very generous too with the whole "Oh, dinners ready?? It is a wonderful thing when at least 1 of your parents knows the ins & mabye even outs of gaming. My dad not only got me into Final fantasy as he was playing VIII at the time, but also spent alot of time watching me play due to a compromize with adult games (I was allowed to play M rated games at a very young age as long as I had supervision in case something really scary happened for example). Hell, just like how dad got me into FF, I managed to get him into God of war. Those were truly fun times & now that I've began playing SNES & NES games when we go over to visit em', I'm surprised just how much he recognizes. Also, about save states: They were also pretty prevelant in Point & clicks as well as some cinematic platformers like Oddworld: Abe's exoddus (although most would just have very frequent saves) due to the copious amounts of trial & error present in those genres. Alright, mabye not flat out save states, but rather just a save anywhere, any time kind of system. It still wasn't mapped to hotkeys & loading was traditional in the sence that it took a little time.

To bring up the whole "Struggles with Saves" thing on topic of this game, the trick to saving in Super Mario Bros. 3 SNES is to MAKE SURE YOU BEAT A FORTRESS FIRST! Notice the locked gates on the map? Beating a Fortress unlocks the gate, so if you either need to Save & Quit, or you get a Game Over and choose to Continue, note that the Fortress stays destroyed after beating it, and the locked gate is permanently unlocked. This way, you don't have to replay other levels to get back to where you were. Example: Beat the Fortress in World 1, and congratulations! You don't have to replay Levels 1-4! HUZZAH!

Lucas Couto Ah yes, I know that feeling. My mother worked a lot and never had time to play games with me anymore so I was rather lonely until a friend of mine's named Anthony got his hands on a PS2 so it wasn't all bad. However, if I have a kid (depends on whether my girlfriend and I get married) I'm going to make it a standard to play video games with him/her regularly, whether it's sports, RPG, racing, multi-player platformer, shooting, or fighting. It'll be our little way of father-son/daughter bonding.

EdwardNewgate58 You're going to be an awesome dad. One time my mum was so sick of me playing games that se asked me "What if I was like you? You come from school/work and find me in front of the video game/computer playing?" I said "I'd find it pretty awesome, actually I'd ask you to put in 2 player mode for me too."

I liked Sonic 4 Episode 2 because, since I was playing on a tablet, if my battery died while I was playing an Act, I don't have to start the act over. Instead, I start from the last Star Post (Which is a checkpoint for those who don't know) I hit. I wish Sonic games still did that...
