Seeing my 3rd ELO concert Sept 30th. Keep doing ELO reactions. I love watching you. Comments are all love. Haters go fuck oneself.

Hector, this song is from ELO's 1981 LP, *Time.* It is a concept album, about a man (Jeff) who accidentally time travels a hundred years into the future, but in his same location. This song is about him walking the same streets of his old neighborhood, lamenting that it's ugly and depressing and sterile and unfriendly, and missing his old 'hood back in 1981, and in particular, his gal he left behind back there in the past. The song title has two meanings. One, he's disappointed for mankind that the future looks so bleak and devoid of human spirit; and two, he's questioning whether he will ever get back to 1981 again, or is this his fate to live out his days in this cheerless future, where everyone he ever knew is long dead and gone. Read this verse, and it'll all make sense what he's talking about. Peace out, brother! *_As I wander around this wreck of a town_* *_Where people never speak aloud_* *_With its ivory towers and its plastic flowers_* *_I wish I was back in 1981_* *_Just to see your face, instead of this place_* *_Now I know what you mean to me, ooh_* *_And I wonder (oh, I wonder), yes, I wonder (yes, I wonder)_* *_Is this the way life's meant to be?_* -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In other words, the protagonist is describing 2024. 😀 And wants to be back in 1981 which I perfectly understand, as I would love that too. Well, coming from a former so-called "communist" country, maybe not 1981, but 1989 definitely.

I love ELO but it took me literally decades to appreciate this album. I bought it when I was 14 just after it's release in 1981 and shelved it after a couple of listens (maybe I was expecting a continuation of Discovery? I was 14). I'm now 57 and I count this record as one of the best in my modest collection of around 600 albums. It speaks volumes to me now.

He’s not talking about a break up necessarily. The character has been taken from 1981 to the year 2095 and he’s reflecting on how much everything has changed and is lamenting on the fact that his girlfriend is stuck in the past
@brianmillar9326 ай бұрын
Exactly no break ups In this song. What's incredible about this 43 year old album is that some of the lyrics depict a world of constraint " when I look around this wreck of a town where people never speak aloud with its ivory towers and plastic flowers " sound familiar? Jeff was so ahead of his time here be basically predicted the future ...genius.

You’ll love “Here Is The News,” and “Yours Truly 2095.” Both are from Time as well. This is my favorite ELO album and even more relevant now than it was in 1981. Every song is fantastic! “21st Century Man,” “Rain Is Falling,” “From The End of The World,” and “Hold On Tight.” Another similar album came out around the same time; “Kilroy Was Here,” by Styx.

I have a theory about the Time album. If the Eldorado album is about dreaming of medieval heroics to escape a mundane bank job, is Time really about a dreaming of future time travel to escape and unhappy relationship reality. Hence all the relationship references in the songs. This song always reminds me of and feels inspired by the ending to Planet of the Apes( original one).

@paulmckearney49456 ай бұрын
@@brainsqueezereactions Well done! Jeff Lynne must have had this film in mind when he wrote these lyrics. I think he wrote some if not all the lyrics at Elton Johns chateaux in the South of France, rented for a few weeks. Hence the French in Hold on Tight, translated by the aux pair girl!
@paulmckearney49456 ай бұрын
This is the kind of device Jeff Lynne has used more recently. For example the song Alone in the Universe, omg not another great ELO tunes, how many are there? Answer: loads! That is the reverse idea. Inspired by reality: the passing of the Voyager spacecraft out of our Solar System, but lyrics "about two people", his own words. Which two people? Jeff Lynne and... long estranged ELO drummer Bev Bevan perhaps? (he is the deep-voiced backing singer on some of the old ELO tunes). Jeff is touring his ELO show this summer. Hopefully the tour will reach the UK at some point. You should go and see it. The show is just as brilliant as the records or more so! The problem with Alone in the Universe is that it leaves me for one if those epic endings of the old tunes like Shangri La, Steppin'Out and Mr Blue Sky, but he chops it off short leaving the listener wanting more these days!

I know it's not your style to react to an album in its entirety from beginning to end, but if you can find an hour to do so, this is definitely an album that has to be listened to in that way, as it is telling a story. This was my first ELO album, which I heard in 1981 when it was new. It blew my 13 year old sci-fi loving mind into subatomic particles and energy waves that went in all directions of spacetime and a few extra dimensions, all at once. And today I often find myself yearning back to 1981, when things were so uncomplicated - I truly wish I could go back there again, and everything could be the same. And I don't even have a ticket to the moon. 😢 ❤
