My brother, please try this way when you secure the dust cap with a securing ring. The first step is to secure the piston seal in the inner grove next step is to take a nose plier or Adams plier with its beaks closed.take the dust boot on to the beaks don't open the beaks yet,then push the beaks further through the neck of the dust boot and then open its beaks try to make the c shaped securing ring into a circle smaller than the circumference of the dust boot housing or groove in the caliper. now seat the dust boot and then open the beaks of the plier as you position the ring into the groove slowly. That way the tension in the ring will make it open up and push and secure the dust boot into the groove or housing. Then open the neck of the dust boot with your fingers and push the greased piston until the neck engages into the groove in the piston.Thats the way.I have seen many people who are confused ad keep confusing others by trying to insert the boot and the piston and then engage the ring.

Never, ever put your hands in front of the piston when using compressed air to remove the piston. Use a block of wood in front of the piston to prevent injury and damage to the piston if it intended to be reused

The part where you are putting the outside seal in the rim of the caliper. I put the side that's toward the inside of the caliper in first because it's hard to access. Then I use wooden tooth picks to gently push the rest of it in. It takes 2 seconds that way and the tooth pick is less likely to damage the rubber boot like a metal tool can.

One thing that will make getting that piston in easier and square is if you take the old pad and a c clamp and push it in that way I find works best instead of trying to push it in with finger strength .... Adam, thank you. Installing the front brake caliper boot seals on my XJR was the most intractable problem. I, too, was concerned when I saw your use of air pressure with your fingers in the line of fire. My pistons shot out of the calipers under 60psi like canon balls. Still, I'd tried two alternative boot installation techniques previously both of which were unsuccessful; yours was the charm.

How about lubrication grease on piston such as rubber grease. For Honda it comes with 3 grease. Correct me if I'm wrong, lubricate piston with Brake Fluid, when the whole caliper getting hot during hard braking, it will condense water and rust inside. Btw thanks for the video :)

Great video mate. It's exactly what I was trying to find out. Lost plenty of time today trying to fit that bloody seal while having the piston inside the caliper.. Those other products for are probably made in accordance with the brake manufacturer's specifications. Brake fluid is not supposed to pass the seal and come into contact with the dust cover so the brake fluid may damage the dust cover.

Hi Eric I believe you are going about doing the dust boot the hard way. this is an easier way do very thing the same lube the square cut seal but do not put the dust boot on the piston put it in the caliper first then lube the piston and the opening of the dust boot and set the piston on the dust boot and use your blow gun to put air into the caliper through the hole for the brake hose you need to regulate the amount of air into the caliper enough to blow the dust boot around the piston while holding the piston down as soon as the boot is around the piston stop the air then push the piston into place.

If you just want to replace the dust boot, you push the piston in so that the groove in the end of the piston where the outer seal goes is just below the groove for the inner seal in the caliper body. This gives you space to seat the inner seal in the caliper groove with the aid of a small srewdriver. You then push piston out and do outer seal.
@69novaguy918 жыл бұрын
Honing the bore inside the caliper is just a big waste of time and effort as the cylinder does not ride on the walls of the caliper .... it rides on the seals only ..... Caliper grease and caliper assembly lube/fluid are two different animals. The container you showed is for greasing the external parts of the caliper: slide pins, pad hardware and back of the pads if they lack anti-squeal shims. Raybestos BAF12 or similar is what you use for the piston, piston seal and cylinder.

its only worth to buy a reman caliper when you see scratch in the cylinder bore or rusted start to get in past the groove for the dust boot, I did bought a new piston and installed with the rebuilt kit as it corrosion so bad that it put a hole through the piston. On a freshly repainted caliper DO NOT use brake fluid. I would recommend silicone grease. Top Tip: If you don't have access to compressed air to remove or force the piston out, you can attach a grease gun to the brake pipe thread and pump grease in there. It will work, no matter how seized. You will have to clean the grease off with brake cleaner.

buying the rebuild kits for all 4 of my calipers is about $15. A tube of Toyota rubber grease is $20 and it will last for perhaps 50 rebuilds. So for $15 I can refresh all of my calipers. In my opinion this should be done every 3 years/60,000 miles or so. Your calipers will never fail and never need to be replaced. In my opinion assembling with Toyota rubber grease or equivalent is essential.
@opmike34312 жыл бұрын
Also, brake fluid is indeed hygroscopic, however, the seals themselves are NOT, so you don't have to worry about the seals absorbing any significant amount of moisture. Most vehicles ship from the factory without rubber grease on the interior piston seals. I've used grease and I've used fluid over the years, and I've yet to encounter any major difference. I also keep my fluid fresh according to service intervals, so I can't speak for fluid that's been left in lines for 10 years.

Most auto parts stores will talk you into a reman.Look at the labor rate a shop charges to rebuild a brake caliper vs replacing it with a reman.The reman replacement is a much cheaper labor rate.Plus the bleeder screw never comes out easy or breaks off on the old caliper

1:30 in and broken finger are a high possibility! Also, where are the chemical protection gloves? A short piece of 2X4 and a rag on top to confine fluid spray. I'd also use brake assembly lube designed to lube the caliper seal rather that brake fluid. The caliper was painted before. The salt on the roads out here rust things so bad, we have to paint the inner piston surface, all outer surfaces of the caliper, slider, as well as all the contact surfaces of the hub, rotor, and wheel.

the piston and seals should be assembled with Toyota rubber grease or something similar. Rebuilt calipers are lubed internally with grease. Assembling with brake fluid will increase the presence of corrosion down the road.
