Brake light switch replacement for a Toyota 4Runner

My 4Runner is a 2006 but it should be the same from 2003-2009

Great video! Fixed my ABS light coming on and not being able to shift out of Park. I'll add that the first time I installed the new switch I didn't push it in far enough before locking it. This caused the brake lights to be on when the brake pedal was released and the brake lights to go off when the pedal was pressed. Make sure you push the new switch in all the way before twisting it clockwise to lock it.

Those of you that came her because your 4runner (or other vehicle) got stuck in park, this MIGHT be your issue! It can also throw error codes such as VSC and ABS warning lights. Easy fix, look into it!

Taking this out and putting it back in (switch was fine, just needed adjusting)solved so many issues for me: dashboard warning lights coming on, touchy brakes, not disengaging the cruise control like it should. Thank you Ruben!

I was able to fix my 2008 FJ Cruiser based on your video. It has the exact same parts in the same place. My car wouldn't release the gear shift from park but, after cleaning the contacts, now it work fine. Thank you, and great job on the video.

Thank you for this video! After seeing how easily the switch came out, I went outside and pulled mine out, disassembled it, cleaned it up, put it back together, plugged it back in, and now my brake lights work again! Hopefully it takes care of my ABS lights too! Thanks again!

Thanks for the video was having similar issue on my 2012 Tacoma, no brake lights and ABS and VSC lights on, pulled the brake switch and took apart and it appeared to be working OK so checked the fuses again, turned out the 10A Stop Fuse was blown in under hood box; I think I heard the fuse blow while driving, sounded like a click or a small stone hit under truck, thanks again for posting

Before you do anything… Try this… My situation was my brake lights worked but I was having trouble getting the stick shift out of park. I sprayed some WD-40 on that button at the bottom of the switch and that was what the problem was! The damn thing was stuck… That’s all it needed. May not fix it for you but it sure did for me! Certainly worth trying before you do anything else… Now if your brake lights won’t shut off that is something else probably. But it was an instant fix.

I replaced the tail light fuse and then I replaced the brake light switch as was done in this video. Still having the same problem. The truck won't shift out of park unless I use the manual release and the brake lights don't work.

Just FYI I took mine out, blew on it and wiped down the "nipple" and lights (VSC blinking etc) stayed off for ~8months and just came back on...repeated the process and lights off for few days now

FYI: on my 07 SR5, I had to turn it clockwise to get it out so your mileage may vary

Sawyer Ramos Definitely. It will not shift out of park because it is not detecting the brake being applied.

This is an old thread, but did your brake pedal make a slight click when releasing brakes? My 2005 4Runner just started this, otherwise it's working fine. I'm wondering if the switch is on its way out?

Thanks. Since it's an important part with brake lights the replacement cost (less than $30) to test is minimal. Better than getting smacked in the rear.

Were both brake lights out? I have a 2010 4Runner and only the passenger brake light works. Tried new bulb and cleaning the contacts. Not sure what it is.

Soapstreet Does the Center stop light come on when you apply the brakes? I'd start there. If it works, there may be a bad contact with the driver's side lamp assembly.

Ruben Espinosa Jr Yes, the center brake light does come on. I'm not sure what to think. The tail light portion of the dual filament bulb comes on when the headlights are turned on but not the brake light.

I have the same problem with a 2011 4Runner SR5. Tried everything, bulbs, contacts, fuses, switching bulbs etc. Nothing works. It's just brake light only on a dual filament bulb.

Ryan Johnston I believe you're talking about the brake light switch itself. It can come apart and make you believe it is a different part but it is all one unit.
