THANK YOU SO MUCH. mY 20 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS REALLY CONCERNED WITH HER BRAKE LIGHTS STAYING ON AND YOUR VIDEO HELPED ME KNOW WHERE TO LOCATE THE SWITCH! We had a very special father-daughter experience and she is learning how much money can be saved doing some things by yourself.

Just wanted to say thank you for posting this video on how to change the brake light switch. My Mercury Mountaineer needed it and it was Sunday. Places are closed and I didn't want to take a change and get rear ended. I got the part from Advanced Auto Parts near where I live. I am a 70 year old female and I did the work myself based on your video. Thanks again - I saved a lot of money - the part only cost me $13.90. I feel good about the saving and the work I did. Thanks again.

This video really saved us. Thank you. My wife's Corolla break lights were staying on at 10pm at night, no where to go, no one to call. The hood cable was broken and we couldn't get under the hood to unhook the battery. This video was a real lifesaver. People who are nice enough to make these videos are really amazing individuals. Thank you so much for your help.

I had the same problem on a Honda Accord 2014. I had to unsnap a bottom cover and the left corner of the bottom of the dash half way to get access. I just reached around and compressed/pinched the orange v-clip and they went back together with a satisfying click. Your pictures made it all make sense. Thank you for the instruction and clear videography. Harrison

Right on the nose! Watched the video inside, went out to the car, saw the broke bits on the car mat, had a look under the dash, had a spare bumper not being used on the left side of the pedal and voila. Presto chango, problem (brake like staying on) fixed. Thanks, the video was very straight forward, concise and helpful. Going to order a new part tonight to put back on the left side.

This video was what I came across when searching for a similar issue on my 2000 Ford Contour SE Sport. It is the same basic principal on the Ford Contour except there is no pad. Instead there is a metal slot in which the mechanics for the the break on/off goes into and it had come out of said slot. This amazingly helpful video pointed me in the right direction. Before, I was charging my vehicle daily because it kept dying and I never saw the break lights in the day. Thank you very much for the video and best wishes.

Thanks for this. This just happened to me today in my 01 Corolla. Found the plastic parts on the floor and thought it was something I drug in off my shoe. Watched the video realized that was what it was, went to Advance Auto Parts and grabbed a bumper assortment for $4.80, got under the pedal and fixed it. No labor, no ripoff, no waiting on anyone to fix it. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video. Auto Zone and Pep Boys didn't carry the part. I took the flat disk piece and drilled a hole in the middle, put a screw in that stuck out the same length as the broken off plastic shaft and was just wide enough to fit in the hole in the plate. Works like a charm.

This very same problem happened to me on my 92 Acura Integra and Nissan Sentra. I don't understand why the makers of all the cars just don't make the metal things that hold the "bumpers" the shape of the bumpers and leave it at that. They could have just stamped the steel into the bumper shape and eliminate the plastic bumper all together. From the looks of it all cars have them "bumpers." Sorry for my venting on this nice blog :) Good Video!

thank you so much! I am down here in Mexico in Guadalajara, so trying to find the part for a 93 Mercury Villager would have been tough. Thank you for your video. We have wheelchair accessible van conversion - E150 1999 Ford van and recently our brake lights come on intermittently once the van is off. Again, intermittently, the Remote start won't start when brake light is on, as if battery is dying. But if you start it manually, it starts. When it happens, the b/L goes off when you pull up on the foot pedal. Hoping to avoid this (husband can't hop in van to start manually - needs remote start method) when in park, we stuffed "support" under the pedal, pushing it up to keep brake lights off. However if we don't pack it hard enough, it clearly must droop enough, losing contact and the light is on again. A friend wiggled the actual switch component and the light wobbled off and on. So we all concluded that it is the actual plug in brake light switch component and picked up a replacement. However based on your video, in your opinion (or anyone else out there), do you think it is more likely just a contact issue because of the plastic little plug that you shared may be missing? We are about to have the B/L Switch changed, but because we have had so many trial and errors diagnosing this issue, a little skeptical and thought your video made more sense. Any help or opinions would be appreciated.

This video was extremely helpful, thanks. There's another video that came up #1 on the search results where the dude was like "There's a THING, next to the DOOHICKEY, and when this thing presses that thing..." I couldn't take it. X'ed out of that video, and then clicked yours (#2 in the search results). You guys made it easy to understand, the video work was clear, and it was very easy to understand where the parts were located. I went outside, sure as hell, there's no more button there, so I slipped a water bottle lid in there until we can get to the store in the morning, and now I'm a damned HERO! ;) Thanks, guys.

THANK YOU! My daughter's car battery kept dying after it was parked for a day, and when she came home from college, she said her cruise control wouldn't work. Sure enough, the little "button" bumper was there on the floor. For a quick fix until I can get a new one, I just used a furniture slider (button that goes under the chair legs) and bent the pin to hold it in place. Of course, now her lights go off, and the cruise control goes on. Many thanks.

Thanks, very good, fixed my 97 escort wagon, I think part # was the same, guy at Ford parts wasn't real certain of what I was talking about so it was good to have the part #. Hard to get under dash I pulled up to a curb to get more height for my lower body. Also, with ignition off there wasn't enough play to get bumper in, finally I figured to turn engine on with power brakes, there was a bit more clearance to get bumper in. I wasted almost an hour until I thought of the power brake solution.

This happened to me at 830 at night and I would have for sure had a dead battery (which is brand new) and been stranded in the morning. This video was made with love and empathy, truly. I watched it and raced out to O'Reilly's before they closed. I told them what I learned in your video and they agreed and sold me the part. I had it replaced within 10 minutes (it's hart to get at it/weird angle) but success! When the brake lights went off I almost cried. I want to hug people, especially professionals, that take the time to make these videos for us. It saved me anxiety and money and time. But also, even if my car started tomorrow, I did not want to drive around with brake lights on as that is dangerous. So thank you !!!!!!!!!! Weekend saved!

Same deal with my 87 Accord. First the cruise control stopped working, then about a year later the brake light thing. A quick visual turned up the missing pad for the brake light switch... while there discovered the pad missing from the clutch switch as well. I 'fixed' both with 1/4-20 bolts and nylock nuts, but they were noisy when the pedal arms returned to the 'up' position and hit them. Later got the correct pads, and all was right in the world! Miss that car, it just ran and ran and ran...

Nice informative video. Even the part number came up correct. The FORD parts guy said "Nope, that's not a FORD number", but when he looked it up it was the p/n. Just one thing, most FORD parts locations don't have any of these around anymore, so... Had to order this $4.17 part from the Detroit area distribution center. They only ship in quantities of five(5) and I ended up paying over $20.00 after tax. Had to take all five of them and the local FORD dealership would NOT buy back the extra four parts. That's Borgman FORD & MAZDA in Grandville, MI. I won't go back and do business with those people again.

Thanks for the video. I have a Mercury Villager, lights stay on,. Found the cracked bumper on the floor today. Going to make one from some stock urethane rod. Or look at Autozone first. Note the two bumpers on my pedal are gone. One for the brake light, and the other I assume for the Cruise Control. I recently had an issue where the CC could not be set, now I know why. AI am happy though that is wasn't a wiring issue or something serious. Appreciate it, thanks!

Your on the right track. That circuit is very basic. Since the lights will work, it is Not a power or ground issue. That leaves the switch, And it simply opens or closes the circuit (contacts). There are a few different types of switches but they all do the same thing. Some times its simply that the switch needs adjusted. After all, you've been pressing on that pedal for nearly 30 years. Try adjusting it first.

On some models, the other bumper is used to make the limit to turn the lights on, so if it is not meeting the limit, the lights will stay off all the time. This varies with makes and models, but it is something to look into just in case.
