Bramall Lane is one of the most overlooked grounds in the country. It is a wonderful ground with character thanks to the construction of three modern-looking stands and the filling of the corners (although one corner is filled by administrative offices). The ground is dominated by large, single-tiered stands on both sides. While the GAC (South), Stand looks quite plain, the Visit Malta Stand, which is opposite, is perhaps the most stylish stand on Bramall Lane. The corners of this stand, which opened in 1996, have been filled in by offices on one end and a family-seated area on the opposite. This was part of a corporate sponsorship deal. A row of executive boxes is located at the back of the stand, and a small gable on the roof reminds me of old grounds that featured them. The Kop Stand is located at one end. It has two large support pillars which makes it a little disappointing.
The Bramall Lane Stand is located opposite. It was built in the corner of the stadium and connected to the GAC (South) Stand during the Summer 2006. The roof was also replaced by a new cantilever structure. This allowed the support pillars to be removed so that fans could have a better view of the action. The stand has a two-tiered design and an electric scoreboard perched between them. All four stands are equal in height.
Bramall Lane's capacity has been increased to over 40,000 by the Club. The Club has applied for planning permission to build an additional tier on the South Stand, which would hold an additional 5,400 people. The Club plans to extend the Kop End backwards to add 3,000 more seats. The stand would be cantilevered, with no support pillars. A video screen would be built into the roof.
United fans are vocal and passionate about their club. This creates a fantastic atmosphere, but can also make away supporters feel intimidated. You could hear the pitch from the ground by listening to the crowd. It was quite funny. Just before half-time, I heard the home crowd shouting Goo-on. As the United team got closer and closer to the goal, this became louder and louder. Then, the air turned blue because the person who missed the opportunity was not there!
