That's called scurvy . Later fresh fruit , mostly limes ( hence " Limeys " ) and bottled fruit juice combated this condition.

When Captain Cook when on his great voyage of discovery in 1769, he loaded a fair amount of sauerkraut on board to combat scurvy. It is high in vitamin C but that was not known then...only that it seemed to help. The events depicted here were some 25 years later...

And Scandinavian and German sailors never had a problem with it because sauerkraut was always a staple of their diet. It was easy to store and packed with Vitamin C.
