Excellent camera work! Everything is in focus. Kudos for showing how its done properly and efficiently. If I have a 70 Series that needed this work, it's coming straight to you guys.

Hey mate in the market for a lc79 gxl dual cab. Up front answer, should I go 2.8L 4cyl auto or manual v8?

I guess it would be nice if Toyota built the vehicle with a clutch that was fit for heavy duty use.

spot on Glen, but i think they fit a marginal clutch, to protect the piss weak gearbox on the hilux !!! as far as the 79 goes, not sure why they use a marginal clamp force clutch. thanks for the message mate

It's the 5 speed manual gearbox that cannot handle the torque. Hence the V8 is severely detuned, and even the new 4 cylinder 1GD is detuned from 500 Nm (in the auto) to 450 Nm for the manual gearbox variant that is now orderable.

Non professional mechanic here these vids whilst not an instructional vid per se go into my knowledge bank of how to tackle these jobs. And yes i don't have a hoist and do jobs lying on my back in the dirt😊

Yeah mate - the business has just relocated which was massively disruptive so still getting organised. Having said that, honestly doesn't make that much difference and we've done heaps that way. It's components arriving incorrect that cause issues. Thanks for watching!

Jesus this was an absolute painful watch. This your first time doing a 79 clutch and exhaust? Why you wasting time using dynodrive on kess3 when you have an actual dyno?
@dieselanddyno
@dieselanddyno Ай бұрын
lol, painful to watch maybe, but theres method in the madness. If it went silky smooth you wouldnt have commented .!! as far as dyno drive goes, im always open minded to technology, and until i try it i wont give comment on it. interestingly the dyno drive is super accurate and comparable with the mainline at times, and other times its miles away. from a physics and mathematics context, im trying to determine the cause of the i consistency. Ultimately weve shared the results we get, nothing is sugar coated, and proves theres no real substitute for a dyno. Its interesting that the ECU’s are maths based / calculated load, air mass, VE, blah blah, yet we still cant seem to rely on the same sort of tech for results. Granted, if we look at the first diesel Audi LMP1 win at Le-mans ( years and years ago ) that car was running with in cylinder pressure sensors and was constant logging BMEP, BSFC based on torque sensors etc, and gave a constant instantaneous torque / power readout via Motec, yet here we are in 2024 with software being sold that is not really reliable, but is very accurate at times, and if we dont study these systems and diagnose why such inconstancies, we will never develop a system that works, and / or have the hard evidence we need to contact the supplier and get a refund. thanks for going through the pain, we are new at videos, but not new to putting clutches in 79’s. Its not our forte, but as episodes start racking up our actual forte will become a little clearer. There was ( between the gearbox coming in and out multiple times for scanning and other development ) i got very tired, and yeah your right, it became painful. thanks for the honest feedback, it will help us to get stronger. Matt

@dieselanddyno
@dieselanddyno Ай бұрын
@@GrahamSmyth-um6uhactually mate with my neck the way it is, i struggle to do these jobs on the hoist. at least laying on the ground my neck is straight most of the time and not craning back looking up. Being predominantly and engine / dyno tune shop, i made the shit decision to not instal a hoist. Method in my madness……… if we dont have a hoist we wont take on jobs like fitting clutches, and look where we are now 😂. yeah, nah, yeah…. we couldnt do the tune without the clutch, and the guys i usually refer these sorts of jobs to were flat out, so we did it in house. Was a good reminder to stay in my lane, whatever my lane is ?

G'day, I felt your pain, jacking up 4wds using a pump up trolley to remove & refit transmissions. It is no joy!. I used to do Hiluxes, usually a couple a week using the same method no way I would do it these days... all because the shitty factory clutches with insufficient clamp pressure.good luck.

Cause idiots have too much money and are brainwashed into thinking they need that to go off road or to tow some ridiculous upgraded towing weight
@dieselanddyno
@dieselanddyno 23 күн бұрын
Hi Brian, the torque capacity of the original clutch wont hold the torque developed once its been tuned. One of the age old problems with organic clutches, especially since the ban on asbestos, is that the friction co-efficient of the clutch plate drops dramatically if it slips a little, which then causes more slipping, more heat, and before you know it your stuck between two sand dunes with no drive. the two things the upgraded clutch kit provides is more clamping force between the pressure plate and flywheel, and it introduces friction materials far better suited to the application ( in this instance, kevlar composite ) . the kevlar clutch we use from Terrain Tamer was developed for the Australian military vehicles, and is now available as the fortified plus kit. It gives excellent drivability, no shudder that is common with other ceramic based friction discs, and last for ever if treated right. So yes, before we can do the tune, we need to fit a clutch that will hold the additional torque, and that means gearbox out.
@dieselanddyno
@dieselanddyno 23 күн бұрын
thanks Peter, im not sure that thousands of customers, 79 series owners all over the world, and the australian defence force are idiots, or have been brain washed into thinking they need an upgraded clutch. They need the upgraded clutch for the extra torque. we aren’t big on conspiracy theories, we just base what we do on real life testing and real life experience and feedback from customers. The only other thing i will add, is if low range is used, and there is enough traction available, not all of the available engine torque needs to be applied by the operator. However, towing in sand, in any sort of a hurry, momentum and high range and high power delivery is necessary, and the factory clutch WILL SLIP with a stage 2 tune.
