You left out one very important detail of the limo crash. Yes, Katie was decapitated. Even more tragic is that her mother held her head to her chest the entire time on site as well as the ambulance ride to the hospital. She was so in shock and so devastated that she just refused to let go. Imagine the horror of that and how it must affect every single moment of her life from that night forward.

The transition at 2:29 is without exaggeration one of the best executed transitions I've encountered in a song. It's such a hairpin turn that it's really less of a transition than it is a sublimation, rage to resignation, cacophony to harmony, percussion to melody. These guys were fucking titans.

The last minutes of this song are some of the most harrowing and haunting I've ever heard. The way their voices start off quiet "I'd die for you one time, but never again..." chanting "never again... never again" over and over until it fades into the countdown of her years -- "I love you so much" again starting quietly, gradually ramping up with the guitar becoming increasingly discordant as his voice also climbs in a frenetic pitch until he's screaming "five will love you so much" with all the rage and despair and anguish, and then the blend of the background voices coming in AGAIN so softly you can hardly hear it at first, "Never have to buy adjacent plots of earth, never have to rot together underneath dirt" and then that, too, gradually building and building in intensity until it overtakes the constant repetition of "seven loves you so much", all of it wrapped up together and twisting over and over and around the constant furious guitar.... and then all of it culminating in the solo fading out and the song ending. I remember first discovering this song and the story behind it almost seven years ago now and it still never fails to give me chills every time I listen to it.

I think the most haunting part of the song is the background lyrics that get louder as he counts up to seven. "We'll never have to buy adjacent plots of earth We'll never have to rot together underneath dirt I'll never have to lose my baby in the crowd I should be laughing right now..." So sad.

Hell, he may have gotten drunk on purpose so as to not feel much. Either way, people are the root of every problem in this world, and those seeking to inflict catastrophes will do so no matter what. I believe the first half is the mother's perspective and the second half is the driver's. I feel like the "One'll love you so much..." is the driver speaking. He's talking about her family. He says "do me a favor and don't reply" because he doesn't want to be accused by Katie. "Cause I can dish it out but I can't take it" may be speaking to the fact that the driver can cause pain but can't take the guilt.

This song's really fucking morbid, but I cannot stop listening to it... Btw, my guess for the "I love you so much, but do me a favor..." part might be about Katie's mother praying for her. Hearing a reply from her deceased daughters spirit, however, would be unimaginable... It would bring her back to that day when she had to realize that her 7 year old daughter had died... (Also why the singer might count to seven)
@chatterbox13378 жыл бұрын
I think you are both right. I've never been able to place a meaning to him counting to seven. Make sense that he counts to seven because it was Katie's age and them counting again to seven because the drunk driver had 14 drinks. MAN, Brand New fuckin rocks.
@394spurdr8 жыл бұрын
"we will miss you but I'm time you'll get settled and we will write" is the family of the drunk driver. then it goes, "beauty supreme, you were right about me"... that is him writing a letter to a loved one from jail. the "I love you so much, but do me a favor, baby, don't reply. cause I can dish it out, but I can't take it" is the response letter from that loved one saying please don't respond anymore because they can keep going back and fourth but it's killing them.

"And in the choir, I saw our sad Messiah He was bored and tired of my laments Said 'I died for you one time, but never again'" In the darkest, saddest hours of my depression, I always find this line resonates with me, especially as someone who was raised religious and taught that God was always there for you when you needed him. After years and years of begging to be heard, and met with nothing but silence, it just all feels so empty and hollow now to think that something like a god would actually care enough about my problems.

I used to listen to brand new every time I felt especially depressed. It felt like it helped channel my anger and sadness, at some point I had to stop because I think it just amplified whatever I was feeling. I never listened to this song much growing up when I loved br& new - this one was a "skip". after having a child, I get it. they went hard on this, and all it can make me think of is the horror that this family experienced and the lengths we go to to hopefully never have to go through such a trial. no one should have to live like this. we can do everything right, and everything can still go wrong. The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me. I get it. Where did God go? there is nothing anyone could possibly say to comfort me in this situation.
@eoghanblackwood82602 жыл бұрын
I always imagined the album cover is supposed to be about this song. Katie is depicted as the kid on the left. The Grim Reaper (center) is listening to the monster (Heidgen, on the right) who is trying to explain himself after he killed Katie. It's a totally arbitrary connection to make, but I like the idea.
@thomasredmond71112 жыл бұрын
I think the album cover is a representation of one of the main themes in this album being; Youthful innocence hiding just around the corner from the pains and evils that inevitably life will bring to us with each year that we get older. - that's just my interpretation tho
@thomasredmond71112 жыл бұрын
I think all of the songs on this album and the lyrics within most definitely portray that idea pretty centrally most especially this song as it's about pure innocence being ripped away in such a tragic and random way. Life is a lion that we tiptoe over the teeth of, just hoping it's mouth won't clench and swallow us away forever.

I heard about this story yeaaaaaars ago on Oprah and for some reason, I was just thinking about it the other day. And then I got The Devil and God in the mail and I've been listening to it nonstop and I start googling the lyrics and find out this song is dedicated to the little girl....SO weird.

That's crazy, I just read the original article because of your comment. Such a sad day for that family.

A couple parts in the song, it kinda sounds like Gerard Way started singing. I know that's not the case, but if you listen to it again and hear what im talking about let me know. This is a great song! Rip Katie

Yeah, I really hear it during the "signal interrupts" part, it's cool cause both of them are two of my favorite vocalists!

I think that in his version of telling it she doesn't die quick and the parent is trying to comfort her as she passes away, but doesn't want her to try and do the same back because she can sit there and say it but hearing it come from her reminds the mother that she won't be ok at all.

I hate this song because it makes me feel shit that I didn’t think I was really capable of feeling and it’s really unnerving
