Josephine's haircut in 1795 is perfectly ACCURATE. Women about to be guillotined had their long locks cut by the executioner. Fashionable ladies such as Josephine would copy the hairstyle to show how life was fragile (one day partying, the next day sentenced to the guillotine). This is not a grunge '90s' hairstyle.

The woman's hairstyle you're referring to was called la guillotine. It became very popular among the younger upper class. As a reminder of the horror. If you see a woman with a red ribbon around her neck, it has the same meaning. So that hairstyle is historically correct for the time.

Considering how eventful Napoleon's life is you could easily make a LOTR sized trilogy and it would still be dense. How will they put all the big events in a 3 hour movie and do them justice is beyond me, especially considering we get to see him even in Moscow in the trailer, so it's not just rise to power. I am afraid that a lot of these set pieces are just trailer baits.

there is already a 4-part Napoleon tv series, tbh well done, and even in that one the most battles are extremely short, also almost completely missing the Russia fail run, only to focus on the most important life events of Napoleon so a 2 1/2 hour movie won't probably be anything else but a quick relay between the events...

So, what you said about the accents got me thinking… Accents in historical movies tend not to bother me a lot, but sometimes they can be used very intentionally. I first noticed this in the movie Death of Stalin, where all the actors use their natural accents whether they be American or British or what not. I thought this was actually rather smart because it’s a subtle way of emphasizing how much of a cultural and linguistic tapestry the Russian Empire and Soviet Union were. With Napoleon, I think it would be a really cool, subtle move if Joaquin Phoenix spoke with his natural American accent while everyone else in the cast speaks with predominantly British accents. As a Corsican, Napoleon was considered an outsider in France for much of his early life, which was only emphasized by the fact that he spoke French with a Corsican accent, which was considered very strange by some. I think doing something like that would be a really small but really cool aspect of the way Joaquin Phoenix plays Napoleon.

Great video, just want to clarify a couple of things because the Napoleonic era is my baby: 1) Josephine's haircut: Perfectly fine, she was almost executed herself during the Revolution on account of her familial ties. Her husband had unfortunately lost his life for a lesser reason (failing to adequately defend Mainz) and she was soon to follow, only being saved by the end of the Reign of Terror before her execution. The cut hair was a symbol of alliance with other women who would have unjustly faced the guillotine, but soon after she would grow her hair out. 2) Time frame: We see a quick scene of Napoleon being surrounded by his men in his famous green uniform and bicorne. Considering the men around him are wearing shakos, I believe we're looking at his return from exile in 1815. We also see Moscow burning in the trailer, so the time frame is 1793-1812, but most likely from 1793 to at least 1815, perhaps with a black screen and white text at the end to say "Napoleon lived for six years in exile before dying in 1821" or something along those lines. 3) The voting scene isn't the vote to make him Emperor, it's the vote to make him and two others equal Consuls of France, but Napoleon would quickly use his position to his advantage and be declared "First Consul for Life", making him ruler. The vote to make him Emperor wasn't done by coup but rather popular vote which he won - thanks to his secret police and his brother falsifying the voting details by doubling the 1.5 million voter turnout to 3 million. 4) As regards Austerlitz, by the time that the artillery is unleashed on the Russians (the scene makes it seem like it was all planned to be a trap for the Russians to go that way, in reality it wasn't and the cannons had to be rushed up to take advantage of the situation) they were in full retreat. Napoleon had cut the army in two and the only feasible route the southern section could take was across the frozen pond as the French had secured a steady line from Sokolnitz/Telnitz up along the Pratzen Heights. Most of the cavalry engagements took place more to the north, where the remnants of the Austrian army after Ulm were located. 5) The movies is about 2hrs 30mins. They'd have a LOT to do in that time to justify it. But hey, just look forward to Steven Spielberg's HBO series which will be a seven part series! Apart from that, great video :)

Thank you very much for the presentations. I know very little of how about Napoleon. Was that the battle or was it a different battle Where because of Russian army followed The Julian calendar and their allies following the Gregorian calendar failed to meet at the appointed date and time. Both of them arrived on the same date however the days were different as the calendars are different. Hence Napoleon defeated two smaller armies on two different days, rather than a combined one. But I have no idea of the battle name. If you could help me I’d appreciate it.

I 100% agree that the scope of this movie is daunting. Even if they were to have all the battles occur offscreen they would still have a hard time fitting everything into a two hour movie. But there are at least three battles shown just in this trailer, that’s going to be eating up a lot of the runtime and mean they have to condense everything else even further. Unless this is going to be a 3-4 hour epic, I just don’t see how they can do the macro level justice. But maybe they’ll be focusing on the micro instead, letting the long term events just blend in the background and focusing instead on micro stuff like Napoleon’s characterization, costumes and battles.

About Josephine's haircut, I just learned it was fashionable for a time for aristocratic women to imitate the look of Marie Antoinette when she executed by guillotine: hair cut short, red ribbon tied around the neck. Napoleon's own sister Pauline wore this look for a bit. I don't know if the fashion was in vogue at the exact time when Napoleon and Josephine met for the first time or if she ever wore it, but that haircut is appropriate to the Revolutionary/Imperial period.

The very short, messy haircut, called "coiffure à la Titus", was popular for a short while around 1791. It was inspired both by Roman antiquity and by the haircut done to convicts before the guillotine. It was sometimes paired with a red ribbon around the neck, which seems in poor taste but it's hard to know exactly what the intent was... Josephine's "you're nothing without me" might be refering to the power of the foreign traders she brought to Bonaparte. He had to make compromises to keep their support, such as bringing back slavery which the Revolution has abolished.

So I think waterloo is covered, also costumes look the same of the very famous Waterloo movie back in 1970 especially Napoleon grey greatcoat. Also you can tell from the soldier hats and coat colors which are from at least 1810. Also you can see it's soldiers from 5th regiment of the line which was sent to stop him. Later, we see british units forming square (probably from waterloo), I think it's covering his whole life or at least to waterloo.

Okay, it may have been done before, but I would like to see a video on Josephine and her rise to Empress. From her last minute chance to come to France, surviving the Reign of Terror, dealing with Napoleon's almost obsessive love for her, navigating the Bonaparte family dynamics, to her chess moves to stay in power when she felt Napoleon was going to get rid of her, she is so much more than the 'love of Napoleon's life', which I feel she often gets relegated too.

Regarding the hair. The style shown was popular amongst men and women and is sometimes called the "Guillotine Haircut" as it imitated the hair being cut short to aid the guillotine cutting through the neck. But more likely it was due to a play about the Brutus' that overthrew the Roman Monarchy and ushered in the Republic - The French Republic being Rome reborn and all, the patriotic middle class used their wealth to display their fashionable patriotism

This looks pretty promising. I just hope they'll be able to cover his entire rollercoaster of a life, because that'll take a LONG movie, or a trilogy. There's a reason why people made Napoleon's life into a miniseries in 2002 rather than a movie... and even that series skips over quite a lot of stuff, or barely touches the surface. Napoleon was basically my first big encounter with giants of history, and I did a "report" on him in school when I was 9 years old with the help of my grandfather 😀... Please be good. I can't handle this being like Alexander, skimming over 80% of the title character's life.

If I had to guess, it's going to cover his actions at the siege of Toulon, the whiff of grapeshot in the streets of Paris, the the Italian campaign (with emphasis on Marengo), the Egyptian campaign (specifically the the Battle of the Pyramids), the coup of 18 Brumaire, the coronation, and Austerlitz; all through the lens of Napoleon's relationship with Josephine. The way I've read it described the premise as: He conquered the world for her, then he conquered the world to spite her.

Not to be one of those 'actually' people- but Josephine was known as a ' _merveilleuse_ '- part of the subculture that rose in in post-Revolutionary Paris - one of her contemporaries was the scandalous Theresa Tallien, whose style was even more daring- male counterparts were known as the ' _Incroyables_ '; the transitional _Directoire_ era fashions could actually be pretty wild - her hairstyle in the scene appears to be an impression of the 'Hairstyle a la Titus'- because wigs were out, as they represented the nobility & the bourgeois- & the Terror still a very recent memory; the survivors memorialised their connection to victims of the Terror, through _Bal's Victimes_ or, 'Victim's Balls'- & you could only attend if you'd lost a loved one to the guillotine - you dressed or cut your hair short, like you were preparing it for the blade- wore old mourning dress, rather than new clothes- & finished off the look with a narrow red neck ribbon, to symbolise the cut... There were other parties were *_even wilder_* stuff was rumoured to occur...

I’m so excited. Napoleon is literally one of the most fascinating and interesting characters in history. The resume is impressive. Countless victories, was crowned emperor by the pope himself, fought battles in front of the pyramids and had countless adventures there and the list goes on. Back that up by him being betrayed by one of the greatest actors currently? Shut up and take my money

I'm guessing to have a detailed discussion of what's shown so far, we're looking at around a 3.5 hour movie. If it were just on Apple it can work much better than in theaters, since you can pause and go back. He also would have been with someone else other than Josephine by Waterloo, if that's what is being shown with the British in squares of four. The Battle of Austerlitz is off because they would have avoided sending troops across it. The Battle of the Nile is off as well since they didn't fight right next to the pyramids. It's at least going so far as his reurn from exile, because the one scene is of him walking through troops after challenging anyone to shoot him.

Josephine absolutely kind of made partly napoleons career that is accurate. when he was getting popular and won battle after battle he was still regarded y the french elite as that Corsican, a people the french truly looked down upon and treated them almost as sub humans, being inferior not truly Italians not truly french. they saw napoleon as little more then a useful tool for their agenda's. but it was because of Josephine, he had suddenly acces to the higher elites all over Europe, she opened all the doors for him to have support in important cicles. she often acted as a diplomat on his behalve and did so exceptionally well, since she was from higher society. and he was so mad by her, many things he did was to actually impress her. so yeah she contributed a lot to the man he became

the hollow square was a very common tactic employed by infantry to counter cavalry charges, it was not exclusively employed at Waterloo. What I don't see in this square is the bayonets fixed on the end of the muskets, which are an integral part of the square's defense. No horse is dumb enough to throw itself to a wall of spikes, no matter how well trained. What I consider accurate is the formation of the square itself, with the colors in the middle next to the officers. I'm pleased to see that the square is also not moving, which many in Hollywood try to do. While a very well trained unit could in dire circumstances slowly move the square, the amount of training and unit cohesion for this maneuver was almost never worth the risk. What we see in that scene is more realistic, with the cavalry flowing around and circling. This is also why redcoats didn't like facing chasseurs or cavalry and artillery.

From Stalin desperately trying to stop Hitler through diplomatic channels after barbarossa, to Rudolf Hess and himmler trying to break western allies off. There's probably a bunch more that I'm not thinking of, but the "what ifs" of these could make an interesting video 🤔

Ridley Scott already made the Extended Cut of *Kingdom of Heaven* over 3 hours long, and that's a much more self-contained and comparatively 'short' story, so I don't think there's any reason to worry that this movie will be just 2 hours long, and if there is a 2-3 hour Theatrical Cut, well we'll hopefully get the full intended experience as an Extended Cut down the line!

I really hope that this movie is like 3 to 4 hours long so we could have a whole experince of this. Like i love napoleons story and i hope they do him justice and show how both great and not so good he his. Also i believe that the battle he mentions to the one girl(sorry can't spell her name) could be a flashback type sequence to shorten the time. Plus Egypt may be short to since after Egypt he takes power in his little coup(also I'm pretty sure he fought the British there before leaving for France, while also leaving behind lots of his men to die in the sands there). Either way can't wait to see both the movie and your video on it.
