FINALLY! So many other videos have use the video collage and copied the plugin to every single clip on the timeline. This would be fine for maybe 2-4 videos, but if you're doing a virtual choir or something else with 30-40 clips, this would take forever, be wildly inefficient, and make resizing and cropping insanely more difficult. Thank so much for this!

There is an alternate way of applying this. Bring in your clips. Apply the collage to the top one. Set the tiles where you want them. Right click the clip. Copy. Click on the second clip. Right click. Paste attributes. Make sure the box for Plugins is ticked. Click Apply. Click on the Effects tab. Create Tile. Manage Tiles - Tile 1. Continue for remaining clips. You could select all remaining clips at once to paste attributes to all at the same time. Then, you would Create Tile for each individual track. No need to resize or crop. It would also allow the tiles to fly in with the footage applied, rather than just revealing the footage in place.

The problem I've encountered with the paste attributes approach, as Mr. Alex Tech illustrates in another video, is when you want to change something like the animation. You have to go to every tile, click effects, expand Animations, and make the changes. If you have a large number of images to display in your collage (40+ images) then this gets very tiring. The downside to the approach in this video is the resize/crop, or if want a pan and zoom on the images that are being displayed. Those all get resized as the playhead moves and it gets to be a pain to keep sizing and positioning the image appropriately. So both strategies have their drawbacks.
@SteveMartinUSA

I really appreciate this considerate discussion. I've watched others, including Mr. Alex Tech, but they just get straight to the ABCs and leave out things like all of the extra work that's required if you use "Tile" instead of "Background", or the short comparison with DVE that you did at the end. One thing that's kind of missing, though, is how to stylishly reuse this collage for say 40 pictures, two at a time, or considerations for Dynamic Zoom (like Pan and Zoom)... Great video Branden.

I'm not sure you mentioned it but one of the main reasons to use the 2nd method is all the videos move with the masks. In your first method while it is easier it is only really good for certain transitions. Like at 11:00 when the fly in happens the tiled videos are not flying in they are just stationary underneath. Yet in the 2nd method at 15:56 you can see how the video fly's in properly. So ultimately the workflow to use depends on what animation if any you will be doing. Great video thanks!

I tried DVE and love love love it. HOWEVER …. the order of clips in the timeline dictates the z order, as in track 1 overlaps track 2. So, I don’t know how you would make a composition whereby 2 frames would dance about the screen constantly overlapping each other. That seems very complex, to me. You’d have to at least have key framing control of the z-order so as to push one in front of the other. Crazy thought. 😮

Tile method is perfect for larger layouts like Virtual Choirs or Bands. You set up the main look and number of grids, then copy the FX settings to all your other clips so they have the same layout and look... then you set each one to the correct tile with a couple clicks. It's much faster than doing these sorts of things by hand for each clip.

Thank you Branden. This is all new to me. I downloaded the Davinci tutorial but the lessons were set up for version 16 and I have 17. I wanted to use davinci to create a collage video of my band "The Chicago Project" and we have 9 members. So it's all a lot of work and I couldn't find a clear and simple explanation of how to go about doing this untill I came upon your video. So once again thank you for the time and effort you put into explaining how all this works.

Absolutely Brilliant Branden, Just discovered you a couple of days ago, and was very impressed by your enthusiasm, One effect I'd love your thoughts on, is a Page Curl effect which is customisable, from corners and edges, I've asked other KZbin Tutorialists in the past, but it seems to be not easy, Maybe consider this as a challenge ! If not, I will look forward to your next tutorials regardless. Thanks Again for helping us mere mortals trying to learn DVR17 and earlier

This is where I’m missing FCP’s drop zone type effects. I had a great plugin that was very customizable for split screens for FCP. I’m cutting a performance with lots of split screen overlays and found that downloading pre-made overlays or the video collage plugin just isn’t as good as making my own mattes in Fusion. I’d don’t really think it’s that much more work because I make exactly what I need without fiddling with settings.
