I live in zone 9B on the ocean in North East Florida. I have 15 fig varieties. I planted all my fig trees in February...as 12" rooted cuttings. They are all 6' tall and loaded with figs. Amazingly my "Beer's" fig is the best tasting - very sweet and produced over 50 figs so far, and it;s Early sept.

My mother in law let me try a fig off her tree and at that point I said I’m going to get a fig tree or two. Well now I have a rooted cutting from Southern California (Adriatic type) and bought 3 cutting each of Nero 600m and peters honey. Your channel pushed me to realize that I’d prefer to grow trees rather than tomato and peppers. (I live in a condo with a patio so I have to chose what I really want to grow )

My Grandfather had fig trees in his yard. I never understood all the fuss till I ate a fresh fig. Those dried up chewy fig wheels full of seeds from the supermarket are terrible. Fresh figs are a joy and a superfood. All mine are in pots. Olympic, brown turkey, champagne and black mission. I am a decent gardener but figs are different and require a bit of learning. Thanks to all the great 411 from all the fig guys on u tube!

I planted my first fig tree in the winter here in Texas. I cut the bottom out of a large pot and planted the pot about halfway into the dirt, filled it with soil I mixed and waited. I covered it with bubblewrap during the horrible storm we had here in Texas. It still hasn't budded out and I'm waiting to see if it survived.

Hi Connie, I just bought a celeste fig tree from local hardware store. It is just a one main stem, about 4 to 5 ft. tall. I am in AR, zone 7b. Last year we have brutal winter with temp. goes down to -10 degree...so I was wondering how is yours surviving because I may need to do the same thing here. Or should I replant them in a bigger pot and plant in ground in spring...to bypass this winter and give it time to grow a little bigger. Thanks.
@conniedavidson18073 жыл бұрын
@@mandiegarrett1706 I thought mine was dead but everyone said to leave it alone and see if it comes back. It did from the bottom and is now about two feet tall. This winter I plan to wrap it in bubble wrap and fill the wrap with straw if it gets that cold again. I may cover it with a blanket also. I don't want to have to wait every year for it to come back from the roots. If it is still in a pot, I would put it inside if the weather gets as bad as last year. That's what I would do while the weather is that cold. Migardener has a youtube video showing how he prepares his for winter. He wraps his in burlap stuffed with straw.

I started last year by planting a Brown Turkey which was difficult to get going because a hill was bulldozed down to a "bedrock" hard red base. I hacked away for three days to get a narrow ten inch hole, put a half gallon of old chicken manure from their roost inside an old pen here, then added old potting soil, grass clippings, pine needles, and surrounded the tree with cardboard shipping boxes and more potting soil, grass clippings and leaves. I finally managed to get about 6 branches up to between 10 to 25 and 30 inches long. Despite the horrible drought and 108 to 114 degree days in August. VERY unusual here. The tips were killed by frost and I have them all bent over in a spider leg pattern with one center branch. I took four cuttings. I just ordered four Celeste trees. I plan to simply get wagon loads of forest soil to make small mounds to plant them in and the mounds will be covered in grass clippings and leaves. These two types are recommended for Louisiana. Later on I`ll get a few more types after studying about it or just clone more and more of these. The birds will get their own patch away from the main yard plus Mulberry trees.

Temptress were 17 to 22 degrees over an extended numbers of days . Mostly above 20 degrees and the potted Chicargo hardy survived nicely I didn't wrap it . I basicly gave up on it , moving indoors. White Marstella survived in a pot one winter not wrapped but growth was poor the following season i got bored and threw it away. I wish I didn't now

The one I purchased has two different type of leaves, one with a large leaf and one leaf looks like a hand with fingers. The cuttings I have going now have just one or the other. So was the one from Lowes grafted maybe? Either way, we have yet to try the fruit as it only has had one or two so far. I am looking forward to trying them and making fig preserves!

Hi , I live in Australia, I just bought a Fig Tree Which said it was great for patios in pots. Any way around 10 days some of the leaves started drying out and turning yellow. Not having a lot of experience I was worried. I didn’t know if I watered it to much or not enough? I fertilised it with osmocote slow release pellets. It was purchased from Bunnings a very large hardware store that sells everything. They were in the sun but not fully as it’s a store. I thought maybe shock as well. They all were the same and looked like they just arrived. Anyway, thanks for listening. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

It's not local, but the best place in the tri-state area by far is Bill's Figs, 329 Old York Rd, Flemington NJ. Maybe 2 hours drive for you, but worth it if you love figs. People come from all over - Delaware, Maryland, CT, PA, NY state. Bill has hundreds of varieties of figs. Most garden shops that may have a few figs sell a very select and small variety of figs, usually brown turkey. If you want awesome varieties, go to Bills Figs. Additionally, most of the trees you can get from garden centers are generally purchased from commercial growing operations, so the amount of time, effort, and maintenance that goes into the proper cultivation of the trees is virtually non-existent. Bill, on the otherhand as a fig specialist, personally maintains his trees and cultivates extremely fine specimens. If you were to look at his stock of trees and compare them to the same variety of fig (lets say, a Brown Turkey) you might find at Home Depot, it's night and day. Like anything else in life, investmenting time, energy, and love into a pursuit will definitely pay off. Figs are known to taste better when the tree is cultivated well, so you are getting considerably better quality of tree and fruit through a specialist like Bill Unfortunately, fig specialty stores are quite uncommon, so I really do believe the closest option to you is Bill's Figs. Garden centers rarely if ever carry more than 1 or 2 of the most common varieties. All in all, if you really do like figs, I'd say it's totally worth it to pay a visit to NJ. And one final point of consideration - Bill is extremely knowledgeable regarding all things figs, and he's always willing to share that knowledge with other fig enthusiasts. Good luck with your figging!
