I first watched this video in 2016 and then today, 1/21/20, when the Senate Impeachment Hearings are currently happening. After watching this I flipped over to watch a live broadcast of the hearings and have realized that I really cannot watch it without having a very strong emotional response. Thanks to the dialogue here I now understand the emotional response a little more and can use it as a guide to non-dual thinking/being contemplation. Thank you so much for your wisdom.

This is the first show of yours I've seen. Thank you very much for treading into those shark waters of politics and religion with so much tact, openness and insight. We need more non-duality, maturity, and voices of reason like yours and Fr. Richard Rohr in our nation's conversations about where we are taking this country. Thanks again. Keep up the good work.

I see in so many of these comments exactly what Rohr speaks about those stuck in dualistic minds....it’s so evident here. He’s explained discernment and they see judgement. Us and them .....please listen again to what he says.....without being defensive. We all do it, but we can correct ourselves.

I continuously struggle between idealizing non-dual, contemplative existence and standing against evil wherever it is hurting others and creation itself. I don't want a sentimental, "everything is fine" mindset whenever justice is being denied anywhere. It seems to be an act of love to want to stand up to that type of evil. To follow this logic even further, it means I will never be satisfied and happy, because the way of the world is that there will always be some injustice somewhere.

Thanks for this discussion - it was really insightful and you guys asked helpful questions and worked well to unravel the complexities of how to deal with wanting to remain loving, when all the hate in our current political/social climate feels so overwhelming. Thanks! My best friend and I visited Standing Rock in October and while there I was frankly left speechless by the almost seamless movement of the people between action and prayer - like you asked Brandan, how do the liberation theology and contemplative theology work together? The weekend we were at Standing Rock the news came into the camp that a great number of people were being arrested at the "front line". People urgently gathered for prayer and what I witnessed in that prayer circle was a kind of "re-grounding" in God. The elder who led the prayer prayed, while weeping, for the warriors, for the police men, for the earth and the water. He prayed for his enemies and his family. It felt like the panic of "fight back" subsided and then the grounded, centered action could be re-achieved, without panic, pain or hatred, but in trust that God was surrounding us. People from seemingly many races and religions were praying together and for my friend and I it was a stunning, sacred hour that left us silent and awed. I witnessed this several times as the warriors/water protectors moved between action and prayer in their daily "duties". I've been following the ideas of action and contemplation for a few years now - cause I like Richard's books, but I'd never seen it so fluid and naturally done (though I'm sure many have/do). Also, I'm sorry Brandan that quite a few people who comment on your stuff just seem really focused on your sexual orientation, or on changing your thoughts on sexual orientation. Knowing we are all welcomed by Love is a subject dear to my heart and I just want to voice a note of solidarity and say I support and accept you. I'm not sure I could be brave enough to have my personal stuff out in the public eye and get heckled for it - so I hope you stay encouraged and hopeful and steadfast in the knowledge of being loved. I believe this will encourage others to accept they too are truly loved and cherished by God.

This video posted in 2016, first viewed by me, today: 1/2/2022. This video discussion is a good way to begin the new year. Thank you so much for this difficult and frank discussion. We tend to skirt the political issues when talking on the finding the center which is 'the beingness' of nondualism precisely because political views have so many powerful emotional / survival responses tied in we can so quickly fragment out into dualistic thinking as survival instinct kicks into high gear. Here we are standing in the center of the storm and seeing all sides, yet in human form we are called to make choices!!! Thank you for creating space for seeing clearly. I have read some of Richard Rohr’s books which I have enjoyed. But in this video I see Richard Rohr as a different man than what I have read from his books. I am not a fan of Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, or either of the two political parties in the US system. Richard Rohr’s comments about the Republicans using scapegoating much more than the Democrats is a sad statement. Neither party is good. The Democrats start with the position of being good hearted and cause the weak to suffer to promote their position. The Republicans start with a position of judgement and sometimes oppress the cause of those who are truly oppressed. Both parties have evil in their hearts and any pastor who sides with just one political party has been infected by the same evil he claims he hates in either political party. It’s a shame.

I enjoy this discussion greatly and Brendan you do bring about a point about the difficulty for the undocumented immigrant to respond contemplatively to Mr. Trump and I see that because there lives/families is on the line and many have not been exposed to contemplative thought so they do not have the tools and are living in fear that is most understandable. I would like a discussion on bringing in the mindset of the oppressed. At present the white person is, at least not threatened for now, while the undocumented person is. My point is that we need to understand that for those who are threatened in a very real way undoubtedly will respond out of fear and to a much greater degree, not fully however, that raw response is not completely their, the undocumented immigrants' faults.

The difficulty, or perhaps, reality, is simply this: in our communal naivety, we must give to Caesar what is Caesar's, (the vote, the dualistic mind-set), and then to God what is God's. The latter seems to me to be the most important, and the "vote" is the dualistic-mind choosing, with all our predicates, history, biases, and imperfections, the best way we as individuals feel, to achieve God's better way. Basically all politics is on the one hand the state provides for the family and community, through taxation, and on the other the family provides for itself, and community, through its non taxed resources. Those are the two polar (dualistic) points of view. Both worthy. Both with merit and problem. The higher plane is where, after the worldly plastic elections, real individual actions of love and care of each other, the family, and the community matter. In a higher sense therefore, it does not matter who wins. So relax. The job starts after they're all congratulating themselves.

If you believe you're right you are if you believe others are wrong you are , observation itself is dualisitic as it implies a part of I being here and that which I observe being there , how ever clear word may seem its not it, as it is not , be still and still moving and know nothing x

I find an imbalance of discernment in that some are celebrated for their Godly words, yet their actions do not match those words. To that point, you see duplicity and hypocrisy. You might say they are silver-tongued. They are smart (deceptive) enough to know what to say even though it does not represent their relative reality. They present a facade. Yet you have someone like Trump who is transparently offensive and in his offensiveness, there is an honesty that people feel like they can trust that they are getting what they see. That does not justify Trump's offensiveness. It is not a lack of discernment about Trump's flaws, it is a choice to trust his flaws over the alternative's flaws. Which is more evil... that which is outwardly evil and makes no excuse for it, or that which pretends to be altruistic but misrepresents itself to be true and good? For those of us who are believers/lovers of God (F,S,S) can we acknowledge the legitimate concerns on both sides instead of acting like the other person is "stupid" or deplorable b/c they don't see the right way as we see it? Can we not have a non-accusatory discussion that debates not that we should love or not love, but recognize that we can differ on what loving someone looks like. Do you love someone more by teaching them to fish, or by making them dependent on you to give them fish? Which is the more loving? Both can be loving depending on the circumstance. Helping people with fish for food is a metaphor, but it is relevant and begs the question as to how we apply this to government policy? That's a difficult question. It seems like we are disagreeing on the wrong aspects of our concerns? The absolute reality of our ONENESS in Jesus has to be front and center or we will always be defeated by the thoughts, feelings and beliefs of our relative realities... How do I love my neighbor? Do I depend on the government to do the loving for me? I don't think so. That's not to say that the government should not participate, but not as an influence in the abdication of our relationship with God and each other. The idea that regulating immigrants coming into the U.S. is somehow evil strikes me as absurd. Isn't that like saying we shouldn't have any rules for human behavior? I see the Christian "Left" accusing the Christian "Right" of being self-righteous and not loving on this issue. Yet, it feels like that accusation is far from being completely true. It has been turned into a political weapon. Do those making the most noise really care about the immigrants, or are they saying the right things because it serves their political agenda? Does Trump take advantage of such circumstances to rally his troops for his benefit? Sure he does. He is guilty. Is he more guilty? Of course, he is (sarcasm). He's not more guilty. He is often his own worst enemy. Trump is being scapegoated for political gain and this is where I'm not hearing much spiritual discernment. Most of the spiritual discernment I'm hearing is that pointed at Trump. Those who are saying they are concerned about justice appear to be the ones most unjustly doing the scapegoating, which begs the question as to do they really care about justice, or just when it serves their cause (loss of power and money)? In saying that I believe that is most relevant to the politicians and bureaucrats that are threatened by what they don't like, not the average person that has a bias or opinion about what is the best way to live and what role government plays in that "best way to live." I do not see us as followers of Christ being the peacemakers by setting the example of how to disagree. For example, I can disagree and at the same time appreciate my brother who says he would not protect his family from someone who threatens to harm his wife or children b/c it is his conviction that Jesus is not violent. I believe Jesus is not violent also, and I would not intentionally take anyone's life, but I would do my best to meet violence against violence to protect them. Would Jesus protect them also? I believe He would. Would he use violence to protect them? Probably not, unless He used Spock's Vulcan nerve pinch to render them helpless :-) without hurting them of course. He would probably LOVE them so much that they would be rendered completely helpless. What's that look like? Can I do that? I would like to think I could. So, I honor my brother's conviction. Yet, I'm not sure I could do the same. My conviction is to protect life. My question is how can I honor both God and those I love and care for in protecting them from physical harm? I share that scenario as an example of how we can hopefully care for and treat each other as we process our own spiritual journeys. As my wife and I have grown to recognize not to use the "dummy voice" with each other. We frequently enough don't see life the same way and struggle with hurt and offense when we can't reconcile our views. Why? Because it feels like we are being rejected by the other? Yet, the absolute truth is that we are ONE even when our relative realities feel far apart.

We are all able to have and express our own opinions; however, I question your perception about Rohr’s speaking “word salad”and what that perception might say about you! Have you spent any time studying, reading his works, or listening to him? If not, you might want to. He is an incredibly intelligent human being who has much to share and teach us as we struggle with our lives and our efforts to live fully with each other and God, our Father. Try non-dualistic thinking...you might approach Rohr’s work differently.
@illumoportetcresceremeaute887

@@annehumphrey732 he spent nearly twenty minutes saying nothing more than: those who see the world through the lens of good vs evil are just not as spiritually mature as us *smiles and winks at Brandon... Then concedes that God views the world and our actions in it dualistically. So according to Rohr, when we are spiritually immature our cognitive constructs have the same basic structure as God's, but in order to spiritually mature (I assume he means get closer to God) we must ascend to nondualistic, yes-and, thinking. That doesn't logically follow and he never explains why it should be so. Also, he never explains at which point further maturation leads back to dualistic thinking. All the while he sprinkles in talk about overcoming ego as he slyly suggests that those who see the world differently are inferior to him (this little rhetorical technique is just too rich. It sets up an us v. them dualistic paradigm. He can't even help doing what he has supposedly transcended even as he talks about transcending it. Lol!) It's all talk and no substance: word salad. I have some friends that are fans of his and one gave me his book The Divine Dance. I read it. It's full of the same word salad nonsense as this interview. It's also filled with new age heresy. Now, I don't mind people writing new age stuff, but I don't like when they try to pass it off as Christian. This is especially appalling when the person is a priest who is trading on the authority of the magisterium for credibility, all the while undermining the doctrine of the faith that the magisterium expresses. I don't think Rohr is as intelligent as you think he is, and even less so than he thinks he is. But he's an excellent pablum salesman. He knows how to weave a tunic that touches all the right receptors in the minds of those who fancy themselves intellectuals: those that want a version of Christianity that doesn't lump them in with all the neanderthals that are so hung up on sin and redemption. Only one problem, the emperor is naked (and isn't it odd that a child, an immature person, is the only one to point out that truth in the fable)... What does that say about you?

So I have studied intensely enough to get multiple Masters degrees. I want you to understand I am happy that you are doing some of the legwork that is needed to search out our lord. It is very important for you to understand the Bible needs to be taken within context that could mean within a chapter it could mean within a time period directed to certain individuals you have to Define your words through the strongs or another means. You have to understand that to fully understand versus that people take out of context you need to do which the Bible Our Father in heaven and his son Jesus Christ not the trinity as is perceived, line upon line precept upon precept here a little in their little add that to Proverbs 25:2, “It is the glory of God to conceal a thing, but the honor of kings is to search out a matter.” Having an opinion on scripture is one thing but deriving our own meaning without doing extensive leg work or coming up with what we think it means based on traditions of fathers and other teachers only is a mistake. I personally have been possessed Matt demons seen gray aliens which are demons was delivered by the grace and love and name of Jesus christ. So I can tell you certain truths and facts from my experiences that confirm the Bible that confirms Jesus Christ literally is God / the Son of God and the only true God is Jesus says is the father in heaven. Everything has explanations there are no contradictions you just have to search the matter out. Kingdom in context Sean Griffin Rob skiba maybe now you see TV and others do extensive studies especially Dean Odell. I used to be on medications I used to take Pharmaceuticals and other substances I mean what's wrong with that it doesn't harm anyone else but reading the Bible God tells you certain things are sin God created us God tells us what is right and what is not right you have to understand their spiritual forces that can influence us to do drugs to feel lust to engage in unlawful or horrendous Acts a violence or otherwise. So you have to understand that we always need to be questioning whether there is an unclean spirit that affects us negatively and that is affecting our mind. The only way you will ever know whether you are being deceived or not is to discover the truth that shines the light on that deceit but to do that you have to ask questions humble yourself and accept truth when you find it. I pray the Lord Jesus Christ Our Savior and our father in Heaven has Mercy Grace forgiveness love and strength in your life to find the truth to know the truth to continue on the path and repent from sins as we almost do just about every day as we all sin I'm sure every day. Praises to the Lord God most high keep on the path....

Wise questions and words. Shockingly the biggest issue of the US and many other nations is distrust of external authorities such as politicians, governments, churches, institutions. Alarmingly 30% of US people of voting age do not even trust that their vote will be counted at the ballot box. That's more than who voted for President! Only one in two people actually voted and people are so fearful of the world around them in the US that support for assault rifles has increased from 39% to 61% since year 2000. Law enforcement cannot be trusted. Scapegoating was very effective here. Anyone who represents the source of imagined fear. Fear of annihilation. The fear of the other. The other are big China stealing our jobs (forgetting that US people love the cheaper things China makes); illegal immigrants stealing our jobs, Governments regulating companies out of business stealing our jobs, the environmentalists and global warming scientists stealing our jobs, global trade deals stealing our jobs, Big Governments ignoring our cries for relief of poverty not caring about our lost jobs.. 'God Damn it!! away with all those those powerful institutional leaders.. they cannot be trusted anymore!!!' Give us someone who dances to a different drum, does things wildly different, is politically incorrect and offensive to the institutions including the Catholic Church, the Pope, the establishment... some-one who can say "enough is enough!" say what I want to say but can't be heard. Being politically correct is killing me and my community for far too long.. my town and community is now a ghost of its past. bring on a beast who can charge through all that rubbish and throw convention out the window. A human tornado who can lie and cheat and abuse but who will speak with rage. My rage.. and may he be heard from around the world. He will be the bearer of my individual hope to be able to trust again.. Heaven help me if he lets me down.. what will I have left to trust.. not even myself anymore it would seem.""" source: imagined dialogue of a despairing US person who either didn't vote because both candidates can't be trusted, doesn't vote because he/she doesn't trust it will be counted, or voted against the institution by electing Trump (i.e. 80% of the United States population).

Here are the words of Jesus from the sermon on the mount." but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery" At the end of the sermon on the mount Jesus warned about people hearing these words and not putting them into practice. Woe to us if we add , take away , minimise or exaggerate the words of Jesus. Jesus said "Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels"

Richard Rohr said he understands the sermon on the mount and what I did is quote Jesus fromm the sermon on the mount because its what the bible teaches "but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery"

Yes I get that but a sin is a sin----there is not one worse then another ----if God forgvies Murder He forgives lying, stealing, adultry etc----it is your intent and the love you put out to the world----pointing the finger is what the Pharasees used and Jesus said to the towns people -----throw down your stone unless YOU are without sin yourself------this is my point----no one should be pointing the finger at someone else less YOU are saying you are sin free.........

You're approaching these questions about politics from a liberal mindset. It's as if you can't see the people who are disgusted with DC status quo politics and just want the system to be shaken by someone like Trump, or who need a decent job; and, as if you don't want to address Hillary's war hawk ways, her support for third trimester abortions, etc. "Wisdom" has to work a little harder than you're working to see reality clearly.

I have to say, I have never heard a more dualistic conversation preaching the importance of maintaining a non-dualistic mindset. Apparently no one noticed that the term 'non-dualistic' is a dualistic term by definition. The prefix 'non' is intrinsically dualistic since it exposes the dualistic contrast between something and its opposite. But of course, dualism is OK when Brandon and Rohr arbitrarily say it is. In other words, they maintain a dualistic mindset when it conveniently supports their scapegoating narrative. Oops, I mean, just being truthful. So if you vilify Trump, you are being truthful. If you are criticizing Hillary, you are scapegoating. Wow, the convenience is soft and cozy and wonderful, isn't it? Welcome to the exciting world of self-contradictory nonsense. By the way, Jesus was always dualistic. When he said the rain falls on the righteous and the unrighteous, that's not "non-dualistic." It stands in contrast to the idea that the rain does not fall on the righteous and the unrighteous. Further, the Trinity is not a contradiction of 1 and 3 at the same time. The trinity is one God, three persons. Not three Gods and not one person. One God, three persons. It's mysterious, and we can't understand it exhaustively, but we can understand it truly, and it doesn't violate the laws of logic, which, by the way, are grounded in the mind of God. It makes me sad to see such sophistry masquerading as wisdom, and it makes me even sadder to see so many people being suckered into this false teaching. It makes me sadder still that Robertson preaches unity and bridging the gap between those who disagree with him when he is displaying the ultimate hypocrisy of all when he blocks and silences those who call him out on his dishonest and deceptive messaging. That's what he did to me, and it proves he is lying when he claims he wants to grapple with these issues even when it's messy. He would rather silence someone like me than face the issues and have the courage to engage those who disagree with him. That's what the left does. It can't deal with the truth that undermines its message, so it has to silence it at all costs. But there I go again, being dualistic. As if he isn't. (I'm setting my stopwatch to see how long it takes to silence/block this message.)

Again. You didn't listen closely. We SAY Jesus was dualistic and that dualism ISNT bad. You're blocked (not silenced, that's an offensive overstatement for a white man to make) because you dont know how to engage civilly, only level criticisms and tell me why I'm wrong. That's not conversation. It's preaching at. And I don't tolerate it on my pages.

The more the church drifts away from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it. You can pretend you're not silencing me, but you know you are. I don't enjoy calling you out on your false and deceptive narrative, but it's necessary. You're leading numerous people astray with your deception and those who see through your dishonesty have a responsibility to expose it. I wish it wasn't that way, but it is what it is. I tried to ask engaging questions a while back, and you dodged the issues. 1 Timothy 5:20: Those who continue in sin, rebuke in the presence of all, so that the rest also will be fearful of sinning.

Keep crying "persecution". That's your prerogative. So sad to see someone who has been deceived so thoroughly that they promote hatred, homophobia, and discrimination. I can hear Jesus now saying only one word to such a person... "Repent".

I would like to share an idea. Politics and life can be best understood by working with magnets and iron filings. Every magnet is a representation of life. Actually, it is responsible for life in the entire Universe. Without a magnetic field nothing in the universe would move. The opposite of magnetics is gravity ... Neither can exist without the other. That is duality... yin and yang ... life and death. If you look at a magnet it has 2 ends with 2 polarities. One is called north or negative or positive... head or feet. If you break it in half ... you never get a north and a south. You now have 2 norths and 2 souths. duality cannot be separated. Throughout the universe to be one you must have 2 and they can never be apart. They are holographic. No matter how small ... The bits are the same as the parent magnet. Duality is required to exist ... in this dimension. It is a 2-dimensional world in our energy. We cannot see it in 3D until we observe it. By observing it we change it into a reality. The purpose of this life can only be one thing.... to observe and to feel and to understand it all... to know what it is about in every respect. When we do ... We can go home and know what being apart was like. We are ONE again. Without the terrible and the horrible stuff, we can't learn what it is to be separate from that singularity that is LOVE. UNITY again. I write this with the words GOD sent me.

Richard Rohr, I love your work and follow you closely. I have learned and grown through your often inspired writings. But. You are wrong and misguided in your bias in favor of the Democratic Party. You seem to lack an ability to see equal wrong and evil in Hillary Clinton as you do in Donald Trump. You lose some credibility with me, and I believe with many other people when you lose your 'non-dualistic' sight in this regard. I would love to see you take a giant step back from this, and try to understand those in this country who have very valid reasons (arrived at through contemplative-type thinking) for seeing vast dangers in embracing monolithic and ever-growing centralized government.

Philbair, your fundamentalism isn't helping anyone. It seems to me you want to help, but, I'm afraid that it's your kind of literal thinking that keeps the Church and Spirituality held back. God and our spiritual selves are so much bigger than your narrow view would have anyone believe. One instance is your focus here on irrelevant aspects of the human experience {homosexuality} loses site of the larger picture of God's immense presence among us and within all of us.

I heard them reference contemporary men's phila-sophy more than the Word which never changes. Does God include everyone? Or do we want inclusion of what we desire? He says to love him over even your parents, wife, anything. He came to his creation and was not known and suffered for our sake. He left his throne to die for those that hung him on a tree. To live is Christ, to die is gain. Get off our imagined thrones. Stop looking down on him and look up. Roman Catholic and iron and clay. God bless

If it is both and (which it is), then it also has to be either or ....(sometimes and all the time). so it is both "either or" and" both and" because it is both and. Problem is the over emphasis of one over the other inside the human mind. If Christian we have the Mind of Christ though both the written revealed Word and the Living Cosmic Word. Jesus the 2nd PERSON OF THE GODHEAD is eternal and entered time through the formation of God. When we experience the kenosis the Lord fills us with His thoughts. The problem with non Word of God new age stuff is that it presumes that the Law is not part of the Cosmos through the creation of God. The law is stagnate only when devoid of Christ and is to be a school master to lead us to Christ. Revelation knowledge as described in Ephesians 1 is the Light we seek but we do need to depend on the Lord's governance (Thou art the Christ the Son of the Living God) because there is Truth and then there is truth.

Consider our conditioning which is part and parcel for all. Now consider a software download that is utterly self centered in a polarizing sense. It's all you know. You are not aware of being aware let alone a perception of some non physical stimuli. That type of being can be of utter significance when considering our own place within. Incidentally that being deserves compassion, not a free pass. Compassion can come in all forms with proper intent.

Did Jesus change the Roman government or even the pharasies church/ ways? Not at all. Most Jews still reject Him and Rome is coming back mixed with clay yet will fall. Render to Caesar that which is Caesar. That which is God's to God. No graven images or make him in your image. That's what the wicked do. Glory to him.
