Julie Albert I agree. All that work to set up the new system and they can’t trust it will work. You really need to commit and go with it. With the old calf table in place, they will try less to make it work and revert back to old ways. Why not just put a couple of calves through the system a few days earlier. Wouldn’t that be easier to know if it will work. They have bottle fed calves they could put through it. Lol. And then he gets the calves....why not do it through the new system instead of trying the old way. Kind of backwards.....I think Mike wants to use the old way..just saying.

It's a backup system in case they run into unforeseen issues with the arrow quip system. Hopefully they won't need it, but they won't have to cancel their operations if they do. Basically, it's cheap insurance for an unproven system.

@@sebw1964 That's about like saying all you ever need is a 30" crescent wrench. sure it would work for everything, but it would be a master of none. Also it would be interesting how they would band/cut with a standing calf. Trying to use a universal system most of the time ends up with people getting hurt and PO'ed. also the calf chute is made exactly for branding calves(supposedly I've never been too impressed with a Powder River calf table, so we have a Hydraulic Johnson style table) and the other chute is designed for cows, and doesn't tip over.

If you'd brand a little earlier in the year you wouldn't need all of this. Here in Montana we brand the last week of April when the calves are smaller and can be handled/branded/doctored by holding them down on the ground. It's much faster and easier on the calves, less stress. Fun to watch, thanks!

I agree with you, he’s already there tagging them at birth. I stopped doing that when I stopped tagging them at birth. Too much labor, now I band them a week before weaning when giving them another round of shots. I tag them at about 90 days when I give first set of shots. You can’t live on income from only 150 cows, that’s a hobby. Gotta have town job.

They are in their own area across the highway, so they aren't just seen by walking past, that's why alot of you haven't seen them...they have been briefly in a few videos, I don't know which ones.

Question, on our old powder river squeeze chute the bottom panel would let down for castration. Does the Arrowquip chute do the same? If so then this might be something a second “hand” could do from the opposite side from the other activities or you could setup two working stations to maximize your time.

Why not set the calf table just after the squeeze chute so you don’t have to create a third pathway? If the chute works just let them exit through it, if not it’s next in line. Also you could service the females in the chute and let the bulls through to the table.

Hello! That sound the hens are making is an alarm sound, to warn for danger or very annoyed, disturbed hen. My hens did that when they saw a hawk flying within their sight. The rooster tilted his head and made a little short kind of "what is that" noise which prob means just that, questionmark sound querky sound. Hard to describe. Hens could do that when dogs showed up or foxes or when we rebuild their nesting boxes. Hens were soooo loud! I do miss my rooster and hens. Nice to understand what they are feeling🧡 H Lj

Could you have put the calf table at the end of the arrowquip squeeze shoot? Then if the arrowquip shoot didn't work the way you wanted, you could just run them straight to the calf table and used the arrowquip shoot as a staging area. Just my thoughts. Couldn't remember if you had the room at the end of that shoot. Good luck with branding and banding!

The chicken is bragging about laying an egg mine always do that in the morning when they're laying eggs soon as they lay they start cackling like that... I like banding better than the other ways of doing it there's a knife and there's also I used to call it a nut Crusher but it just crushes the tubes in the testicles that go into the Bulls body... the band they feel tightness for a short while until the feeling goes out of it and never have any trouble with the infections I think it's a much more humane way of doing it
